ITāS RARE FOR ALPHYS TO walk with a pep in her step. To leave her laboratory on Aether Paradise for any reason was unheard of, but she had a hankering for food that couldnāt be delivered. For years, nothing has happened. The trickle of letters gradually stopped. Undoubtedly, that influenced her to leave her small space of safety.
SHE LEFT, ORDERED FOOD, AND now sheās making her way back to the ferry. The way back is convoluted to maintain secrecy and security. When she first stepped on land, the urge to turn back was strong. Self-doubt and anxiety paralyzed her to the spot. Fortunately or unfortunately, she missed her chance to run back, and trudged before.
BUT SHE DID IT, DESPITE all odds. An inkling of pride settled warm in her heart. However, her victory was short-lived. A Growlithe paws at her leg and startles her into dropping her takeout bag. She yelps, then gasps, and winces at the small dark puddle seeping out of the bag. Moving the plastic revealed her fears: the takeout box broke open and her food spilled out.
DISAPPOINTED BUT NOT MAD, SHE looks up at the approaching trainer. Alphys adjusts her glasses and fidgets. āO-oh. Um. Itās f-fine. Nāno worries. Heās cute, haha. . . eeeuh.ā
"Wait... oh my god, I'm so sorry!"
It's only then that Kinpa notices the spilled food on the floor that Alphys must've dropped when Kinpa's Growlithe ran up to her. Suddenly, she's filled with a rush of shame; guilt that only intensifies when she gets a better look at Alphys' face.
She said it's fine, but she seems bothered... and who can blame her for that? Kinpa nearly bites her lip, doing her best to stifle the feeling of frustration growing in her stomach and focus on somehow making it up to the woman she'd inadvertently ruined the meal of.
"You need to be more careful!" Kinpa scolds her Growlithe sternly, gathering him up in her arms before he can cause any more trouble - and then her eyes flicker back up to meet Alphys' gaze. With a slight wince and a remorseful expression, she speaks again.
"Are you okay? I totally ruined your lunch... Do you want me to buy you something else? Augh, I can't believe him..."

There's no real reason for Kinpa to be embarrassed.
A lot of people start their pokemon journeys young - real young. But that doesn't mean that that applies to everyone. Kinpa once got into the habit of assuming every trainer she sees has already experienced their own "adventure", traveling with their pokemon and bonding with them through trials and tribulations, until they come to understand one another perfectly...
But, actually, the world doesn't always work that way. Not everyone has the time or even desire to go on a journey like that, anyway. Maybe it's just a strange kind of self-consciousness - something Kinpa's not used to at all, since she's normally so confident... Some lingering guilt about the way she never managed to quite connect with her pokemon, even when she thought she had, and they never blamed her for it.
Well, regardless of the reason, she's getting there now - even if it's a little later than most. That embarrassment, however, is rearing it's ugly head now, though in fairness, only a little. Mostly, she can't help but find her Growlithe's actions endearing.
"I'm sorry! He always gets like this when he's excited about something." Hopefully, the person Growlithe is pawing at is easygoing enough not to mind. How could anyone not find him cute? "I thought he didn't have any energy left, but... I guess something must've cheered him up."

do you guys think astro royale could ever get an anime. the answer is no, but i just found out about another similarly axed manga that apparently is getting an adaption.......... and i want to dream.......... ;w;
kinpa's pokemon verse backstory would probably be something like... hmm. her mother and father were both pokemon researchers, but at some point in her childhood (without her knowledge) they were being forced to work for a villainous team of some sort, maybe?? this worked out fine for a while and while they weren't happy about it, they were still able to raise kinpa lovingly - but at one point the team decided they wanted to use her parents' research for some heinous plan.
after refusing and threatening to destroy the research, they seemingly vanished one day without a trace. kinpa doesn't know if they were killed or just taken somewhere far away from her, but either way, she was alone, only surviving due to help from her pokemon, and being taken in by a friend of her father's.
kinpa swore revenge, but knew the only way to get it was in a pokemon battle, since she didn't stand a chance taking on the organization by herself. this frustrated her, since while she was good in a physical fight, pokemon battles were a lot more difficult for her to manage. she was only an average trainer, and her relationship with her pokemon was strained at best as a result of that frustration. she never mistreated them, and only blamed herself, but didn't like having to rely on them when she felt she couldn't do anything on her own...
luckily, eventually her adoptive father stepped in. after noticing what kinpa was going through, he slowly helped thaw her heart, and over time, kinpa came to realize both how her worried her pokemon were about her, and how her parents would have wanted her to live her life happily without focusing on revenge. it took effort, and she does still look for information on her parents when she's able to do so, but she eventually decided to try and focus primarily on her own pokemon journey - albeit, she was starting on hers later than most kids did. sometimes she still gets embarrassed by that, but her focus currently is on figuring out what she wants to do with her life and what her bond with her pokemon means to her by travelling and battling with them.

As if things couldn't get any more awkward, the boy didn't respond. All he did was stand his ground while observing in deadpan silence. The only real sign of life he gave off was a blink of the eyes, followed by a slight tilt of the head once he came to realize she had addressed him.
Such a confrontational attitude. It was as if she were asking to be butchered.
...that's what he would have inquired had the option of murder remained on the table. Good thing Evil Eye was forced to learn how to coexist with humans instead of resorting to his more brutal methods of interaction.
"Thought there was a fight. Came to watch." A cold voice answered straight and to the point, his shoulders appearing to slump in disappointment.
All this commotion from a single woman, but it was enough to catch his attention. It wasn't at all what he was hoping to come across during one of his rare outings.
"You looked...troubled." The words struggle to come out, but it's not as if he's genuinely concerned. More along the lines of practicing a more 'polite' approach towards strangers as instructed by his vessel, less he ruin his image. "Do you plan to do more? It was starting to get interesting."
"And you make a habit of going around looking for fights to watch, do you?"
Kinpa's response sounds unimpressed, and she gives him a skeptical raise of her eyebrow as she looks him over - her arms now crossed tightly across her chest. She can't help but feel wary... and honestly, she's a little creeped out by this guy, who'd apparently been watching for a while without her noticing.
Still, maybe that's unfair. Kinpa can't say that she doesn't understand his interest at all. And so far, the stranger hasn't done anything worth getting defensive over yet... not that that means much, really.
"...In a minute, maybe. I just need a breather first." After all, her heart is still pounding, and it's difficult to even move at the moment; as weary as she is. It's never taken her long to recover from these moments of exhaustion - or maybe more accurately, she's determined enough to push through them anyway - but Kinpa's no superhuman, and she still has her limits.
"Why, are you a fighter yourself? Are you some kind of martial arts practitioner, then?"

Heaving out heavy breaths and wiping the sweat off her face haphazardly, Kinpa takes a moment to stop and feel the cold air on her skin. She'd been hoping that letting out some of her pent-up feelings would help her feel better, but... while she's certainly less frustrated than she was, the underlying irritatation under her skin hasn't completely gone away.
But it's a start, right? For just a second, Kinpa's face softens, and she eagerly makes an effort to actually indulge in the post-exertion calmness that runs through her veins. It's nice to rest every now and again... even if she can't afford to spend too much time on that. But then, suddenly, she notices she's not alone - and that there was a witness to her little exercise routine.
"...What do you want? It's not a crime to be here." The irritation is back. Her face hardens, but as she speaks, Kinpa does realize she's being a bit harsh... she'll wait for the boy to respond anyway, though.
