In a country where masculinity is aggressively measured, recorded, and corrected by the state, feminisation is meant as a threat for young people to 'man up'.

It begins at a local assessment day: one of those public little rituals where nervous boys who tested around the boundary are dressed up like pantomime dames, photographed, and sent home with a warning to be more masculine next year.

It is supposed to be embarrassing. It is supposed to be funny. It is not supposed to be permanent.

But Peter is prettier than he should be. Softer than he should be. Easier to correct than anyone expected - except Mr. Bonnard.

He is told to relax. He is told to go along with it. He is told not to make this worse.

Nobody ever gets chosen from these things. Not really. Not unless the state sees something in him first.
