a surprising number of people see the term "social construct" and think that it means something is not real when it actually means something is so very real because it was created by us and is constantly enforced, often violently

There’s a quality that certain books/movies/TV shows have that leads me to say, “Yeah, I can see people making fanfiction of that.” It’s something to do, I think, with how tight the story is, how much feels open-ended or like it could be elaborated on.
Something like Breaking Bad, for example, has low squiggability (that’s what I’m calling this quality). It’s tightly written, the characters are consistent, there’s little left to interpolate or extrapolate. Obviously, people DO write fanfic of Breaking Bad, but it still has a low squiggability score. Whereas something like Supernatural has a high squiggability score. Fantasy and science fiction often have high squiggability scores. This suggests squiggability could also be related to worldbuilding and potential for people to borrow a premise or setting.
And sometimes you’ll read or watch something and you’ll say, “Ah, low squiggability,” and then you’ll open tumblr and find out that everyone else seem to think its squiggability was very high indeed.

something I really enjoy is that I've now seen like 4 or 5 variations of roughly this same video, all slightly different in their angles and timing while obviously being the exact same bunny and room, implying that this is a consistent and frequent behavior for this bunny instead of just a funny thing it did once that got caught on camera. I wish I could have as much raw unfiltered enthusiasm for anything as this little rabbit has for its dinnertime
Okay sorry i keep seeing this Video and i gotta say it makes me angry.
This is NOT cute behavior.
1. I dont like the cage. Its not bunny-friendly. I See plastics and nothing to chew on. I think the thing with the grid is the toilet? Thats bad for the feet. Not good for sitting and can cause injury if the bunny gets stuck. Would be better with soft wood -chip bedding, No grid.
Also what IS that cage. If its opened all the time okay, If Not its WAY too small.
Sidenote: I see cutesy stiled Bunny cages way too often. Yeah they can work but honestly? Bunnies are high-energy and very destructive. Give them sticks to chew on, no plastics. It will be messy sometimes. They will destroy stuff. They dont really care about neatly colored blankets and pink squeaky toys.
2. I dont see another bunny. So it lives alone. Bunnies are group animals and should be held at least in pairs. Thats not a preference, its a must.
3. The food. Pellets is not a good option. They are often too c Köalorie dense. Its basically dry, pressed (bad quality) hay. So they soak up water INSIDE the bunny and can cause long term damage. Bunnies should mainly be eating good hay (just hay, not pressed into pellets) and fresh vegetables and leafy greens. Low calorie stuff. Their digestive system needs almost constant intake because unlike humans the stomach does Not move. In order for the food to pass through the digestive system it needs to be pushed by the new food. If the food is too calorie dense the Bunny stops eating and the digestive system STANDS STILL. That can become an emergency in a few hours. Like many herbivores they have a very complicated digestive system. Caecotrophy being the key word here.
4. The speed of the Bunny. Listen i worked with bunnies for years and i met some that can be really motivated when it comes to food. But this is too much. Talking 3. into consideration i can imagine that feeding time is maybe 1-3 Times a day. Bunnies should have access to food (and water) CONSTANTLY. If you look at herbivores in the wild you will see them eat like 80% of their time awake. Thats normal, thats healthy, THATS HOW THEY WORK. They eat low calorie food. Most herbivores are some categorie of ruminant animal btw because of that. Stop trying to apply rythms fitting for maybe dogs or cats to bunnies.
Im so sick of seeing people posting bad animal handling and keeping like this. Every pet is a lot of work and as the owner its your responsibility to educate yourself. Especially bunnies are not easy pets but for fucks sake, do better.
Holy fuck @bitterkitten02 I had to scroll so depressingly far to find this in the reblogs. I have rabbits myself, and this video always pisses me off so bad. That’s barely anything for bunny, I see no evidence of hay anywhere here. GI stasis is a serious risk. Like, I don’t know if there’s an alternative feeding/grazing area that we’re not privy to, and this was only done for the video, but I kind of doubt it… These are just my observations, too, from what we can see.
so yeah cosigned from animal welfare researcher if that’s anything!
Hi! Prev's rabbit autism friend here.
Just because a situation is sub-optimal does not indicate animal abuse. Let me go down the list a bit.
Yes, the litter box situation is bad, but woodchip bedding?? Seriously? That's what you think is best? Not, oh, I dunno... Carboard strips? Something that seals in smells, is better for sensitive paws, and is completely safe for consumption, should they get it into their head that they want to eat it? Re: the cage, yes, if it was what the rabbit was confined to at all times, that would be a serious issue, but as is CLEARLY OBVIOUS in the video (or videos, apparently), the rabbit is allowed to free-roam, at least to a degree. The floor, while again not perfect, is fine—carpet for traction where needed, harder surfaces for easier cleanup around the cage. While I don't see many (if any) rabbit toys in the video, they are likely strewn about the play area, as rabbits tend to do, but yes, untreated wood or wicker is best.
In an ideal world, yes, all rabbits would be paired off, but unfortunately, there are many reasons why that could not be the case. The owner could simply not have money or space, the rabbit could be fiercely territorial and refuse to bond with another, the rabbit could be isolated due to an illness or condition, or the rabbit's bonded partner could have passed away. We only see about half the room in this video, and we don't have the full picture. The rabbit looks young, too—perhaps they are simply too young. Rabbits can and have done well on their own with their owner.
"Pellets are not a good option." Question: Are you, perhaps, stupid? Pellets make up ~10% of an adult rabbit's diet, and a bit more for younger rabbits. Good pellets, such as Oxbow-branded pellets, are designed to support a rabbit's diet, and I have literally never heard of them soaking up water inside of a rabbit. GI stasis is a problem, yes, but from my knowledge, it's only a serious, vet-worthy issue after around 24 hours. Again from my knowledge, hay should be ~70% of a rabbit's diet, pellets ~10%, fresh leafy greens and vegetables ~15%, fresh fruits ~3%, and store-bought treats ~2%.
Perhaps this is a younger rabbit, but given that everyone is obsessed with dwarf breeds, it's very hard to tell. It is recommended to feed adult rabbits 1–2 times per day, and more if they are too hungry. They should, of course, have constant access to fresh water and Western Timothy hay, but only young and pregnant/nursing rabbits should have constant access to pellets (and they should be eating alfalfa hay instead), and no rabbit should have constant access to greens and veggies. Also, this could simply be the owner giving their rabbit a little extra food as a treat. Also also, the rabbit could simply be the excitable type—rabbits, after all, are not homogeneous and have distinct personalities, like all other animals.
"I see no evidence of hay anywhere." What's this?
"From what we can see" are you sure you can see? This owner may be far from perfect, but that is also partially due to miscommunication on the part of companies who advertise far-too-small and even harmful cages for rabbits.
Sources: I worked at a pet store (and have firsthand experience in poor-quality rabbit products, and strongly recommended alternatives to any shopped buying rabbits/supplies), have owned a rabbit in the past, rabbit-sit for a friend, and have volunteered at a shelter at which they agreed with my points when they asked about a rabbit's diet during the onboarding interview.
By the way, the third video we see of Suisui (the rabbit's name) when we look them up is a video of them eating hay, and another video clearly shows Suisui running around when their owner isn't "right on time" for dinner, and yet another video gives us a view of sticks and hay spread on the ground to simulate foraging. Do you want to do actual research, or do you want to spout baseless claims?
Ao3 version that lets you open the 'director's cut' where I, the author, explain every detail in excruciating detail to you and what it is in reference to.

Crazy Harry
PERFORMER
Jerry Nelson 1977-2003
Matt Vogel 2008-present
DEBUT
1974
Crazy Harry is the pyrotechnic expert on The Muppet Show. An unkempt figure with wild eyes and a mad cackle, he delights in blowing things up. His trademark is appearing at the slightest mention of an explosive-related word, and reiterating it in the form of a question (e.g. "Did somebody say bang?") before setting off an explosion.
In addition to explosions, he played the triangle bell in the Muppet Orchestra during the first season opening and closing and in the second season closing. His finest hour may well have been in episode 306, accompanying Jean Stapleton on the explodaphone for a particularly frantic rendition of "I'm Just Wild About Harry."
He originally appeared in The Muppets Valentine Show, as Crazy Donald -- a reference to Muppet builder Don Sahlin, who enjoyed creating the Muppets' special effects explosions. His name was changed to Crazy Harry in his second appearance, The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence.
His film appearances have included, amongst others, The Muppet Movie (as the special effects expert), The Great Muppet Caper (as a resident of the Happiness Hotel), The Muppets Take Manhattan (attending the wedding), Muppets from Space (at the beach), The Muppets' Wizard of Oz (as one of the Flying Monkeys), The Muppets (where at one point, he uses explosives to carve his head into Mount Rushmore), and Muppets Most Wanted, where he sets off explosions during Christoph Waltz' number. He appeared in the Stars and Stripes FOREVER! online video and A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa.
When reruns of The Muppet Show were shown on TNT, a Crazy Harry doll was planned as a gift for employees at the network, but only the head (sans eyes) was produced. A number of Crazy Harry action figures were released, including one from Palisades Toys, a Vinylmation figure, and Diamond Select Toys figures as part of both The Muppets Select and Muppet Minimates. A Crazy Harry bust was also marketed.

The amount of slavery in Ancient Rome was legitimately terrifying tbh
Y’all know that I’m into ancient Roman history and I do a lot of research on it but even though I should be used to it by now sometimes I read an anecdote about how an individual slave was treated and I’m hit with the realization that like a third of the population was living like that and I just need to put my head in my hands for a second
Emperor Hadrian randomly stabbed a slave in the eye in a fit of rage and he was supposedly unusually sympathetic to slaves.
There’s other instances of people randomly punching slaves that they didn’t even know because they got in their way or something. This was just normal behavior.
And slaves didn’t rebel en masse because if even one slave committed an act of violent rebellion it was common practice to kill every slave and former slave in the household.
People only took notice for posterity when these mass executions got into the hundreds of people. One of the few recorded for the history books is of over 400 people being killed because one guy stabbed his enslaver.
Like how many people throughout history were beaten to death because some rich asshole was angry and there was no legal or social consequences for doing so? We don’t know.
When you study ancient history you’re reminded that slavery has never once been kind or justified. It just takes on different forms of evil in every time and place that it infects.
Lurking under this is also the fact that most Roman mining operations were done by slaves in conditions that were far more brutal than those of household slaves, to the point that sending a slave to the mines is a threat I’ve read leveraged multiple times in separate texts
also Rome’s slavery is considered chattel slavery.

I almost fell for a phone scam today. The moral of this story is that it doesn't matter how smart you are, there is a scam out there that could very well GET YOU in the right circumstances.
For me today, those circumstances were: Several days of being underslept. Over-stressed. Forgot to take my ADHD meds this morning. Already dealing with the harried mental state of day-before-travel stress. A personal panic trigger of missing appointments because I forgot about them.
We all know by now that the IRS will not call you on the phone. The jury duty people also will not call you on the phone, and this was the crucial piece of information that I did not have cold hard confirmation of today. Here is what happened, so that you can be equipped in case these fuckers call you:
Man with an American accent tells me he's from my city's courthouse. He tells me I missed jury duty summons yesterday and that now I'm in Trouble for contempt of court and failure to appear for jury duty. I protested that I hadn't gotten a notification for jury duty, he talked over me and said scary things about getting law enforcement involved unless I went to pay some fines and talk to the judge Right Now Today. He told me that I legally wasn't allowed to hang up the phone or put it on mute. He told me that I was under a "gag order" and I couldn't tell anyone about this except law enforcement or immediate family members. He already knew my address. He had official-sounding case numbers which he made me write down and repeat back to him. He had official addresses of where I needed to go and what I needed to do: Take the cash for my "fines" to a kiosk where I would pay them and receive a "voucher" that i would then take to the courthouse where I would supposedly speak to a judge. He told me again that if I hung up the phone before I got to the courthouse, it would be taken as obstruction or failure to comply or intent to flee and he would notify the police. He told me that if I went to sort it out with the judge, it might be waived and my money would be refunded.
I have not gotten jury duty summons for a WHILE -- since before the pandemic -- and I had been idly thinking recently that maybe I was due for one. So I heard all this and my panic button about Forgetting/Missing An Appointment got hit dead-on.
I panicked, I was upset and frantic, I was not thinking clearly. This is how they fucking get you.
Honestly, thank god he wanted me to take cash to a different location instead of giving him any financial information over the phone. Thank GOD for that, because it gave my nervous system 30 minutes or so to calm down and my higher brain functions to come back online so that I could notice that there were simply too many red flags in one interaction. I did go to my bank, I did withdraw quite a lot of money in cash.
The address he gave me to go to next was for a gas station. When I expressed confusion, the scammer had smooth explanations, and before I'd even parked, he'd texted me some glossy "official" looking infographics on how to use the kiosk and why the """government""" had started doing payments this way (supposedly a COVID measure, and because the funds were 'safer' or something). The kiosk, these infographic images said, was run by a company called BTC Tech, which they claimed was "Bailing Institute & Technologies". You will notice that that does not match the acronym. The infographic was full of grammatical errors, and thank god he had me sit there in my car and read the whole thing out loud "to make sure i understood it" so that I could hear myself vocally trip over every single one of those grammatical errors and think "Wow, this is weird, it wasn't proofread?"
He sent me a QR code for the ""kiosk"" which had a familiar logo on it. He had persistently asked me for my ETA to the next location, and he was pressuring me to get out of the car and go inside to the kiosk, and it was at this point that I started lying and said, "Sure, hang on one second, i have a pebble in my shoe or something I need to fix first" while I was googling "Bitcoin logo" to verify.
Didn't really need to verify because when I went inside, the only "kiosk" looking thing was an ATM looking thing that had "BITCOIN" written on it in very loud letters. Which brings us to one of two admittedly hilarious interactions, wherein i was standing there in front of the fucking bitcoin machine with my eyes narrowed going, "This is for Bitcoin" several times while he said "No no no no it's not, it's not bitcoin, it's BTC tech" and I kept saying "Well but it says Bitcoin on it in big letters." "No no, it's just a multi-currency system, it's for the courthouse, you have to get the voucher." "Ok but it's fucking BITCOIN, this feels like a scam, I don't think the government uses BITCOIN."
I walked out. I went back to my car. I told him that I wasn't comfortable, and that I needed to call the courthouse to verify with them what the charges were, or I needed to go in person to the courthouse to check what was up. He told me if I hung up, I'd be arrested, and if I stepped foot on government property, I'd be arrested.
It was at this point that I utilized a weapon which in many cases is very dangerous and unethical to use but hey, it's perfect for situations like this: White Lady* Tears. This is exactly the situation they're MEANT for -- buying yourself time to think when a man is strongarming you into meek obedience and fear. (* I am nonbinary but he didn't need to know that.)
Anyway I pretended to cry and told him i felt nauseous and that i was going to be sick and i was just uwu so fwightened and upset and uwu uwu uwu sob sob i felt like he was getting mad at me and it was so scawy oh woe oh no -- while this happened he texted me an arrest warrant that had one of my old roommates' names on it instead of mine, but that EPIC FUMBLE didn't even matter because the whole time I am frantically googling on my phone "jury duty scam" and finding a Reddit page from a guy who posted about the exact same thing happening to him.
I hung up. I called the courthouse, got patched through to the jury pool department, and as soon as the guy picked up, I said, "Hi, my name is Alex, I just got a call saying that I missed jury duty--" and before I could even finish the sentence, the guy said, "That was a scam, we will NEVER call you." I said thank god thank god oh fuck thank god, which brings me to the second hilarious moment of this escapade, where the jury duty guy cheerfully said, "But if you have a couple thousand dollars on you, you can come over and give them to me if you want!" which did make me burst out laughing. Thank you, jury duty guy, for that much-needed moment of levity. I hope you're having a good day.
You are not immune to social engineering. I am 36 years old, highly intelligent, educated, and VERY tech-savvy, and those fuckers STILL caught me at just the right moment and with just the right hook that it triggered panic and desperation and shame and guilt and overrode my critical thinking skills for a solid 30 minutes. If it happened to me, it could happen to you. BE FUCKING VIGILANT. THE IRS WILL NEVER CALL YOU, AND JURY DUTY WILL NEVER CALL YOU.
In hindsight, I'm actually glad that it played out the way it did. For one thing, as a life lesson, that was a pretty cheap one -- all that it cost me was about an hour of my life (including the time it took to go back to the bank and deposit the money I'd withdrawn, gossip extensively to the bank teller about what happened, and get home) and some grey hairs.
For another thing, that fucker spent all that time on the phone with me and didn't get my money. I snatched his smug asshole victory right out of his mouth at the last second and wasted his time -- time that he otherwise ould have spent scamming someone who might not have gotten over their panic in time.
I actually wish that I'd kept him on the phone longer, tbh. If I'd been less rattled, I bet I could have strung him along for another hour or two. Better he spend it with me than with someone else.
JURY DUTY WILL NOT CALL YOU ON THE PHONE.
My partner got a similar call a few weeks ago.
The scammers even had a setup where they "transferred" the call around. It was impressive, and they were prepared for questions about badge numbers, supervisor names, etc.
In hindsight, so much about the call was absurd -- that we were under surveillance, an arrest would automatically happen if we set foot in the police department, the need to go to a "self-serve bail kiosk", the refusal to allow anyone else on the line (the scammers did NOT want my partner to tell me anything).
I have read about this scam a million times.
But in the moment, it was incredibly intense. I only got a taste of it, too, when my partner passed me the phone. Even if you sense a red flag, you are not given a moment to examine it. So many scammer tactics are straight out of the abuser handbook: high urgency, authoritative voice, a barrage of instructions to follow. They want you scared and confused.
Even if you know, "the cops don't call", resisting this sort of thing takes practice!
I used to talk to a lot of cops in my old job, which is what helped me push back -- the minute I chastised the "officer" for being so jargon-heavy and not talking like a real person (something I did often at that old job), I was able to snap out of the scammer's spell and do a sanity check.
But if I had been a little poorer, a little more depressed, or things timed closer to my old legal troubles w/forgotten citations, I may have fallen for it.
I am with OP: You are not immune to social engineering. In fact, the more you think you are immune, the more you are likely suspectible.
A sanity check is what will break you out back into reality. DM a friend, do a Google search, talk to someone else in the house, call the very institution that is supposedly threatening you. Do *anything* to interrupt that scam call so you can think.
the pros of reading ao3 fics in public is that their layout is so clean and simple that people would think you’re reading some academic researches when you’re in fact reading a 50k fic. the cons is that you need to control your face all the fucking time
An additional feature: the layout is clean and simple BUT anyone familiar with AO3 will immediately recognize it. Pro or con? You decide.
If they know it enough to recognize it on sight, they probably aren’t going to be judging me about it.
they were also at the devil’s sacrament

My wife pointed out to me the other day that apparently most people were literally only taught how to say Sorry and not how to Apologize or even that they are different things so here.
If all you ever do is step 1, not only did you not apologize, but people will rightfully stop believing you and start getting pissed or hurt.
ok i’ve been curious about something. can you name a character who is, all three at once,
1. canonically female (no variation)
2. canonically the protagonist of her story (if it’s an ensemble cast you have to say you can legitimately see her as The main character)
3. your personal #1 favorite character in that story (ties are acceptable)
?
