Broken Hearts | Clandestine Draft #1
[Context: I am too tired for context]
Once Upon a Time there was a prophecy that four students of magic would save their school from an evil that would try to destroy everything in its path…
Eventually, the four did come together, a girl with the ability to change herself into any form, a boy who carried with him the leader of the most magical beings in history, a girl who could read the thoughts and minds of everyone around her, and a boy with the ability to bring anything together or rip it apart. With their abilities and the guidance of their mentors, they succeeded and the great evil was sealed away.
Until it wasn’t.
Sam opened her eyes to light pouring into her windows. It was a sunny day and by all means one of the nicest days of the year. Exactly a year ago she had jumped out of bed without appreciating the flecks of gold that danced over the floor or the feelings of anticipation and excitement that had been bubbling in her chest, but this year was different. This morning she stretched out her arms without sitting up and grabbed her phone. 5:31. The bus would pick her up in an hour and drop her off at Clandestine Academy, a school for all different types of students who lived in the magical world or who had magic inside of them. Sam’s father was the janitor and groundskeeper for the school as well as a nymph. Her mother was a witch who brewed potions while managing a law firm west of their town. Sam herself was an unknown, which is to say a child born with vibrant green eyes and abilities outside of genetics. In her case, she had the ability to shapeshift into any form she wanted.
Sam dragged herself out of bed and looked into the mirror. Long brown hair twisted and knotted to a little ways past her chest. She looked at herself with groggy eyes that were changing as she looked at them.
‘Morning Sam.’
‘Morning Anya.’
Anya was a ghost that had managed to die at the same time Sam was born giving her a free pass into Sam’s mind. She didn’t do much with her possession, just gave Sam advice when she felt it was needed and allowed her to use her own ability, knowledge. Obviously, knowledge doesn’t sound like an ability, but knowing everything without any previous experience is what Anya used to become the leader of the unknowns before she died. It is also what helped her to cover up her disappearance before her inevitable death and possession of Sam. The two paired together better than anyone could imagine because Anya’s ability allowed Sam to know how to transform herself into species and appearances she did not fully understand and Sam’s ability allowed for Anya to cover up her eyes as, although most unknowns had green eyes, Anya’s were stark white and passed on to Sam as part of them sharing her mind. Neither of them knew why they were like that despite Anya’s ability, but they both knew enough that it should be kept a secret.
‘You excited to go back to school?’
‘Sure. Why wouldn’t I be?’
Anya had asked for courtesy's sake, but both of them knew she was lying. Once she was thrilled to be attending the academy but things had not panned out the way she thought they would. Last year, her freshmen year, they had fought the aptly named God of Gods. A magic magic deer who had turned to dark magic and had the ability to mind control all of the gods of their world among other things. Clandestine had tried to keep the gods safe by hiding them in the cafeteria of the school but it ended up not being enough. Sam and her friends ended up having to fight some of the gods before defeating the villain and trapping him in the form of a jellyfish that was put in a tank in the lobby of the school and was then released over the summer and turned back to his body by a new group of problems that Sam was sure she would have to deal with. Although, there was a small hope in her mind that maybe they would get somebody else to defeat them, and that her and her friends could finish the school year without having to endanger themselves or see anybody else get hurt.
Sam put on her school uniform and finished shifting her hair to look neat before heading downstairs to wait for the bus. Her dad had left for work earlier in the morning and her mom was downstairs cooking eggs.
“Morning sweetie! You excited for your first day back?”
No.
“Yeah, I really miss seeing my teachers.”
“I’m sure they’ll be happy to see you back.”
They’ll be happy to throw me at the problem again.
“Mhmm.”
Sam sat at the kitchen counter as her mom put a plate in front of her. It had two fried eggs and bacon that looked like a smiley face. A couple of months ago Sam would’ve been ecstatic but, frankly, she didn’t have the energy anymore.
“Thanks, mom. It looks great.” She smiled and tried to make her voice sound a little less dead.
“Awww you don’t sound good sweetie. Were you up playing games last night?”
“You got me.” She smiled like it wasn’t a lie. Like she wasn’t dreading the morning when she used to be looking forward to it. She finished her breakfast and kissed her mom on the cheek before placing her plate in the sink.
