You EMPLOYE Miette? You make Miette pay rent? Jail. Jail for father ten thousand years
actually I think you should be normal about ordinary citizens of authoritarian countries and yes that applies even to that country you're thinking of right now
"but they support [dictator] and [violent action]!" okay is it possible that a combination of propaganda, election rigging, and authoritarian crackdowns on dissent could lead a population to look like it supports something most people would find distasteful under more reasonable circumstances
Also, as a Hungarian: just because you can't see every single individual dissenting in a way you'd recognise or know about, that doesn't mean we all support the authoritarian regime. It is, in fact, often in the interest of the resistance in non-democratic circumstances to remain covert, because loudly declaring that you're planning actions that go against the regime will bring a swift and possibly unpleasant end to your efforts.
The revolution will not be advertised.
It seems to me that the desire to make art produces an ongoing experience of longing, a restlessness sometimes, but not inevitably, played out romantically, or sexually. Always there seems something ahead, the next poem or story, visible, at least, apprehensible, but unreachable. To perceive it all is to be haunted by it; some sound, some tone, becomes a tormentâthe poem embodying that sound, seems to exist somewhere already finished. It's like a lighthouse, except that, as one swims toward it, it backs away.

gonna be honest i donât know how many more âenter the 6 digit code we sent to your phoneâs i got left in me
I worry a little bit that people who refuse to learn about ai as a part of their anti ai position are going to be extremely unprepared to understand whatâs actually scary about it and already have their digital literacy at risk tbh
not that I am some genius in this regard but if you follow ai developments even slightly you might change the things you are most worried about. do people know the extent to which ai is already eating itself and how meaningless this is making swaths of the internet. do people know that there are plenty of random mid-sized companies today buying their employeesâ likenesses to create digital clones and using these to make hundreds of videos. I am so much more worried about labor and surveillance and abuse than people becoming lazy about writing emails. and idk man I sort of like and respect people who are willfully ignorant about it as a way of minimizing its force in their lives and I am in some ways jealous but also when I see posts that basically still boil down to âchatgpt will never fool meâ I am like đđđ for one thing not the only thing to be concerned about, for another thing I am really sorry but I donât think youâre right
it is true that in modern media very often the nakedness of the hag is used as a disgust factor but i have to say that in folklore the reason for the hag's nudity is because nudity is a liminal marker. clothes are a sign of civilization, they signify your place & your status in society. the naked hag is beyond those borders, she is a woman that is kind of a beast, a woman that is kind of a dead (or un-born) person
tbh the fact that we find nudity abject at all is kind of connected to this concept as well. when you see another person nude it's like a violent intrusion into your symbolic structures that you've built in your head. you are used to seeing people as how they present themselves in society and suddenly you see a person as they Just Are. but that's also what's erotic about it (abjection and desire have interesting relationships with each other...)
scientists have recently announced that exoplanet HR 3499a is no longer believed to be potentially capable of supporting life, after new spectroscopic readings indicated that it doesn't even have a dishwasher. "i mean, it doesn't even have a fucking dishwasher," said the lead researcher. "I guess you could live there, but, like, would you really want to?"

triptych that serves as an altarpiece in the Interfaith AIDS Chapel at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, which serves as a memorial for those killed by AIDS and a place of refuge for those currently suffering from the disease. Keith Haringâs last piece before his own death from AIDS.

this is another discussion tangential to the one about LotR/Tolkien, but I do also think that the cartoon-fascist cosplay that is in vogue on the US far right has hindered a lot of people's (especially Americans') ability to recognize or push back against strains of conservatism/fascism that rhetorically focus more on things like stability, tradition, family, and community rather than the worship of power and cruelty for the sake of power and cruelty. the deep Catholic conservatism that underpins LotR might seem opposed to the far-right politics that is in vogue right now in the US (see also the whole Pope Leo vs. Trump and Vance thing) but obviously there's a reason that fascists and conservatives have loved Tolkien's work for a long time, and there are more sophisticated and arguably more dangerous strains of fascism that are extremely skilled at weaponizing the same "universal" values that LotR's heroes are fighting for. and obviously I'm not immune to this, or the tendency to project my own politics onto LotR -- I watched the theatrical rerelease of The Two Towers the same day that Alex Pretti was murdered, and when ThĂŠoden says "so much death. what can men do against such reckless hate?" I felt myself moved almost to tears because it seemed to speak with such clarity to the precise moment. but there is a difference between "this is what the text seems to be saying to me in this moment" and "this is the value system underpinning the text itself."
