Jesse was ignoring Derek and his photos for the moment, leaning up on his toes to try and see the stage better from where they were standing. He was eagerly watching for shenanigans until the moment that he heard the unexpected volume of the building groaning in protest as it lost composure.Â
Assuming that they were making a beeline for the closest exit, Jesse followed Derek without question as he was pulled along. It wasnât until they were shoving their way down the stairs that he realized that of course Derek wanted to stay and help, panic gripping Jesseâs chest as this slowed him down long enough to realize his culpability.Â
He tried to insist on leaving, tried to pull Derek in the opposite direction before he realized it was useless to try and argue over the mayhem or fight against the superior strength of Derek and the tide of humanity that carried them on the stairwell. Resigned, Jesse did his best to shrug into the indifference that heâd been breaking in over this past year. He couldnât fix anything but he could at least stick close by and try to keep Derek from making any sacrifice that couldnât be undone later.
The unknown weight on top of her sunk her body down, pinning Eva to the pool floor. Her lungs struggled to keep up with the oxygen flow her body needed, as the water forcefully fought its way towards her orifices. She was swallowing water at an alarming rate.Â
Writhing, the blonde twisted around, a frenzied attempt at trying to find a way out of the watery hell, as she refused to give up without a fight. She tried to get her head above water, splashing around, to attract anyoneâs attention. The violent water moved about, but none of them were for her. It was every person for themselves now, and Eva was unfortunately losing her battle.Â
Slowly but surely, her breathing hitched, bubbles coming out of her nose and mouth as her lungs squeezed and ached whatever air it could. Her lids suddenly felt heavy, as her motions came to a halt. And just like that, her head idly moved by, following the currents of the water around her. Everything dissolved into blackness.
Derek released Jesse to tear off his jacket, clambering over a tangle of pipes to get closer to the deep end of the poolâs edge. âDonât get crushed by a beam,â he warned before jumping in after Eva.Â
The water wasnât cold, but heâd underestimated how murky the water would be from all the debris and dust. He could make out a dark shape that he hoped was Eva, swimming as quickly as he could to the bottom of the pool. It was hard to make out, but relief flooded him when he recognized her hair as he grabbed fistfuls of her dress to reel her closer. With an arm around her waist, he kicked back to the surface in the hopes that she was only unconscious.
Derek clawed his way to the surface with a gasp, pushing her halfway onto a plank that had fallen. âI donât know if-- I canât tell if sheâs breathing.â
