I do think this is in large part due to most fic authors being women who haven’t done a lot of organized sports or SEC style sororities, so maybe there’s a lack of awareness. Although it’s also just a heavy topic but I realllly think it deserves to be explored and is such a rich and real aspect that kind of looms around the narrative but doesn’t make any appearance.

For those who are unaware, and granted, I’ve never played hockey so it could be very different in that sport for some reason, hazing has been cracked down on in recent years and I imagine being able to record stuff easily has changed things as well. But generally hazing involves a lot of violence and, not exaggerating here, torture with a very very strong sexual humiliation aspect.

The idea is that it bonds you to experience it with the group, and that you have to prove yourself to the group. Please feel free to google reports about hazing and just know that they aren’t exaggerated or rare, it’s just something people are punished, at least socially, for talking about. And then people in charge have to act shocked when stories come out.

Bog standard hazing is just having to drink until you puke and complete various challenges, streaking, sleep deprivation, being a gopher/servant for whoever you get matched with that’s older than you, and having to do silly or embarrassing tasks that people already in the group give you. That’s like the generally wholesome well meaning stuff.

More intense hazing generally includes a whole lot of physical and sexual assault. Humiliation is really common with the general idea being doing something bad/embarrassing enough gives other people blackmail power over you and thus you’re locked into the group. Having to fuck certain people, being anally raped with objects, dangerous levels of physical violence are all very common.

I personally declined to join certain groups because I didn’t feel like dealing with the hazing that included getting naked and crawling over broken glass and mousetraps as just one of the fun activities, and then was for a really low-level sport.

One of the chiller sororities I had friends in had hazing that included circling every area of your body that was too fat or ugly in front of the whole group, being blindfolded and having random guys from the brother frat spank you and usually do other stuff to you, and getting naked, sitting on paper and watching fucked up porn as a group. Then they went around to check if you got wet. Again, this was the chill sorority, this wasn’t even the bad shit.

A guy in my class had to drop out and was permanently disabled because he had a pool noodle shoved up his ass during hazing. I know multiple people who died during hazing and it was hushed up very well. There was a frat at my school that famously made pledges kill an animal with their bare hands and or fuck said animal (usually a baby pig).

Like I’d prefer more sparkle and a sharper style but for no eyeliner and one ancient pallet I’m patting myself on the back for this.
