the rain pelts the windows hard , the buildings standing just across the road were a blur beyond the drenched windows and hefty droplets . clouds hung low over the city , casting the very tops of the highest buildings in mist and gloom ; bob was certain the watchtower's top floor had also been lost to the weather , best to leave it to assumption rather than to witness a dizzying sight , he thought . one corner of bob's mouth lurches , were they already playing he would have lost before either were more than a foot from the starting line .

“ my cooking would make you laugh . ” circumstance had drawn bob to rely on ready meals , leftovers , or whatever he could find on most days of his youth . cooked meals were rarely left in one piece , an attempt at a happy suburban family always ruined by his father's alcohol fuelled stupor . he hadn't developed a healthy relationship with food nor cooking , but he was trying . “ i'd think the first to laugh would uh . . . i dunno , have to order take out instead ? ”
