Lithuanian filmmaker Jonas Mekas and his brother Adolfas Mekas immigrated to the US in 1949, after escaping a forced-labor camp in Germany and spending time in refugee camps following the end of World War II. In New York, Jonas went on to found the crucial journal “Film Culture” in 1964, and he later founded Anthology Film Archives in 1970.
