It’s a long time, hours, before Dean finally lets go for the evening, gives up on finding out any new information on how to defeat Amara. Chuck could help them, probably, but he’s still sprawled out unconscious on their couch, dark circles under his eyes as he shivers his way closer to death, and Cas says there’s nothing they can do but hold on, and hope God doesn’t die before tomorrow.
Dean makes a rough sound that might have been a laugh on a better day, claps Cas on the shoulder, and announces he’s going out for a beer, which Sam translates to mean he won’t be back until sometime tomorrow, hungover and fucked-out, his lip split. He doesn’t even ask Sam if he’d like to join before he leaves, slamming the door shut behind him, and Sam exhales. Drags his hand down his face.
A little while later Cas says he’s going to catch up on all the Netflix he missed while he was away, and subsequently disappears into Dean’s room. Leaving Sam alone, leaning against the kitchen doorway. Exhaustion melting his bones into the floor, making it difficult to move. Chuck is still comatose underneath a thick quilt on the sofa and Sam thinks it would be all too easy to just. Go grab a bottle of whiskey from the fridge, pass out next to him. Worry about everything in the morning.
Instead, he makes himself shove away from the wall. Walks to his own room, locks the door behind him. Pauses to kick off his shoes, splash water on his face from the little rusted-over sink. The cracked mirror above it shows his face worn in and pale, almost gaunt, bruised circles under his eyes, a hollow tenseness around his mouth. He clutches at the edges of the porcelain for a moment, breathes in. His shoulders are one long hard line under the thick flannel of his shirt and when he turns away, it’s a little while before he can get the muscles to relax.
He sits on the edge of his mattress. Closes his eyes.
“I know you’re there,” he says, into the quiet, relative chill of the room. “I’ve been able to feel you since we left the warehouse.”
