simon was sure he should feel something. thirteen years ago, he had told betty to leave the crown. he had been okay then. a year ago, he had held the crown and threw it into nothingness. he had been terrified. simon felt he should be worried or afraid or upset at himself because betty didnt save you for this. but instead of fear or disappointment, with his hands holding the crown so gently without the pressure of someone else watching, he felt... relieved. he felt overwhelming relief.

the cool golden metal felt comforting in his grasp, and he welcomed the familiar chill that washed down his spine as the metal leeched out all of the warmth from within him. and for the first time in years simon felt like he wasnt melting. just holding the crown made the ache of his old bones dull into a quiet hum. he remembered back then, in front of golbetty, how he had hesitated. but- had he? the lesson she was trying to teach him. was it not what she had taken? his autonomy? he wouldnt hesitate this time. he hooked his fingers under the rim of the crown, cradling the cursed object as if it were as valuable as it was old. then he lifted it up and-

there was no sudden change. no flash of white light. no ice king. just, simon. thoughts smoothed over with a fresh blanket of static, simon closed his eyes and.. relaxed. a deep cold slowly crawling into his bones. when he opened them again, he looked tired. but a new spark had lit up behind his pale eyes. "i had almost gotten my crown back, but.. someone i cared about had convinced me i was only hurting myself if i put it back on." he flexed his fingers, eyeing them curiously, before clenching his fists. glittering sparks of ice magic crackled around his knuckles and disappeared over his palms. "i believed her, in a way. i thought everyone would like me better as simon."

"...but if i want to be iceking again, if i want magic again. than damnit!- they dont get to tell me i dont get that choice!"

squinting his eyes, simon held up his hand. chills rippled down his arm and then before he could really think about it, he sent a bolt of ice at the booth. freezing it .. and shattering it in the process.

what if marceline found out?

Memories flashed to back when he first put on the crown. The lightning, the destruction, his family's terrified faces. He shook his head a bit and the memories faded quickly.

at finn's proposal, he halted. hand hesitated, eyes staring down at finns hand. he didnt particularly enjoy the idea of flying. he had no safety net should finn drop him. and as much as he agreed finn could get them there fast. he clearly had a battle he was fighting internally, brows knit together in thought (and frustration). after only a couple minutes, and with more effort than simon was willing to admit, he pulled the crown from his head as if it burned.

He grinned once he was handed the crown and quickly threw it on, hissing with freezing cold breath. "let's go to the ICE KINGDOM!!" Excited!!! His voice was back to being screech-y. He floated up, turning to be horizontal. Then he moved his arms under Simon's upper arms and held onto him tightly. He ZOOMED up into the sky!!

taking the crown. he gently put it on. no dawdling this time. "okay.. hm." he turned around to the snowy area around them. "i have hazy memories of.. hm. lets see.." he lifted up one hand, the other coming to press two fingers against his temple as he squeezed his eyes shut in focus. his outstretched hand sparked with magic and a pile of snow shifted and then.. blinked and lifted up snow-arms.

it was a bit childish... but who gave a damn.

He looked at where the gollum was, rubbing his chin with his metal claw and thinking. Snow grew from a spot, forming into a leg of a dog and then becoming a statue of a giant snow dog. He floated in front of it to shape the face. It looked like a lopsided Jake with smaller eyes. Once done, he sat on the head and lifted his hands, ice works shooting out of his palm and claw. A big grin on his face.

he- he would hate for this finn to loose his jake too.

His eyes followed the firework shot into the sky, mouth open. :^0 "algebraic!" He exclaimed and stared at the picture, eyes big. He turned to look at Simon with a laugh. "you forgot my nose, doofus."

That made sense, the drink guy mentioned him looking younger? But it was weird to think about an older version of him. "huh. a kid was kicking iceking's buns? schmowzow."

He thought about it. He had a foggy memory of taking the crown from a pile of bones. "I guess not. I don't remember beating an old guy's butt up."

"to be fair, iceking was a bit of a kid himself." he slowly plopped down into the snow. the soft cushioning his fall. he lifted the crown from his head. holding it in his lap. "a thousand years is a long time, but without anyone around he kind of became.." he thought, hard, on what to say.

"hm. that sounds like marceline." he said whistfully. though the idea of her growing old made his stomach churn. actually- the idea of aging at all did. him OR her. the fact that he had aged twelve years already made him feel ill- he, frankly- didnt want to die. "oh- he was like.. uh, a thousand and four- no.. fifty?" he clicked his tongue thoughtfully. "i cant really remember how old i was when i started wearing it." his bitterness faded slightly at finns question.

eyes searching over his face, he turned to glance down at the gems that sat snuggly inside the gold. his own eyes looked back. "as long as you have someone who cares for you, you wont. iceking was.. scared, of himself. he ran away from the people who loved him. but you're a brave kid, finn. you dont run, you fight."

He smiled at Simon's response, though. "yeah.. it just means a thousand years of adventures. with plenty of fighting, and saving people." Best not to think too hard about it. His hand hovered over the crown, a way comfort himself somehow.

"well, I gotta visit! who else will save you from your burning microwave dinners??" It wasn't clear if he was joking or not.

laughing at the boy's mention of his burning dinner, simon lifted a hand up and brushed back his hair. lifting his head to bask in the breezy winter air. "of course! you're always welcome in my exhibit."

"shes a very important person here, she slew all the vampires after the apocalypse-" his hand fell from his head to his neck. idly rubbing his thumb over where a bite would have been had she not done so. "a brave warrior- and a very talented musician- much more than me." and i raised her. he wanted to add. he hoped this wasnt like vampireworld...

He looked at where the gollum was, rubbing his chin with his metal claw and thinking. Snow grew from a spot, forming into a leg of a dog and then becoming a statue of a giant snow dog. He floated in front of it to shape the face. It looked like a lopsided Jake with smaller eyes. Once done, he sat on the head and lifted his hands, ice works shooting out of his palm and claw. A big grin on his face.

"i had almost gotten my crown back, but.. someone i cared about had convinced me i was only hurting myself if i put it back on." he flexed his fingers, eyeing them curiously, before clenching his fists. glittering sparks of ice magic crackled around his knuckles and disappeared over his palms. "i believed her, in a way. i thought everyone would like me better as simon."

"...but if i want to be iceking again, if i want magic again. than damnit!- they dont get to tell me i dont get that choice!"

Memories flashed to back when he first put on the crown. The lightning, the destruction, his family's terrified faces. He shook his head a bit and the memories faded quickly.

at finn's proposal, he halted. hand hesitated, eyes staring down at finns hand. he didnt particularly enjoy the idea of flying. he had no safety net should finn drop him. and as much as he agreed finn could get them there fast. he clearly had a battle he was fighting internally, brows knit together in thought (and frustration). after only a couple minutes, and with more effort than simon was willing to admit, he pulled the crown from his head as if it burned.

He grinned once he was handed the crown and quickly threw it on, hissing with freezing cold breath. "let's go to the ICE KINGDOM!!" Excited!!! His voice was back to being screech-y. He floated up, turning to be horizontal. Then he moved his arms under Simon's upper arms and held onto him tightly. He ZOOMED up into the sky!!
