I need to get laid
To rest. Put me in a coffin, let my soul ascend
At such moments, I realize that all these stupid stereotypes about us do not have the right to exist
I just donât think men understand how everything is different for us. I can think of a million examples from this week alone.
omg thank you SO MUCH for finally writing about the water scene! i know i wasn't the only one who was waiting for you to talk about that part which was one of my absolute favorite moments in the film. it was very well-written and explained, as always! and not sure if you're gonna do this, but would it be possible for you to do a piece on that brief but cool moment where the war rig family passes the swamp stilt walkers? would like to know your insightful take on that part if it would be okay. :)
Thank you! And well I didnât plan on doing it, but I started to take a look at that scene and then I couldnât stop talking about it.Â
And unfortunately I lost my first draft. Ugh. At least itâs less of a disaster than if Iâd lost the draft of the Water post (took 8hrs in total).
First, lets get it out of the way that this is a series of shot-reverse shots of a subject (the shot of the swamp and crow people) being reacted to by the reverse shots of those in the War Rig. They are reacting, as a collective, to a scene; Max with the look of Oh No I Have Seen FUBAR Like This Before, Furiosa with Huh Ok How Do We Kill It If We Have To But We Might Not Have To Yet, and backseat characters with That Shit Is Creepy.
Onwards!
First shot is a tripod shot (camera is locked down), which makes compositions tons easier because all you have to do is have actors/objects hit their marks. You donât have to figure in external movement, (be it zooms or the camera moving) wobbling the composition.
So what do we have then?
Center-framed deformed/collapsed tree, with a crow person (please let me know if they have an official name and Iâll change it) standing by it:
The deformed tree is the point of interest here, and that looming overhang of the foreground tree with the crows.
Two subjects then move into the frame, the War Rig and another crow person in the foreground. The scene cuts here:
When the War Rig hits centerframe with the deformed tree.
Check out how precise it is:
Crow person on the Third, branch of the three on the sweetspots and on the horitzontal Golden, looming.Â
And apparently Iâm finally going to be talking about diagonals.
This entire composition is created to create a stifling feeling. The POV and object with the most agency/movement in the shot is the War Rig, both of the crow people are turned towards it. But the vertical lines, the foreground crow person on the Third and the foreground tree is literally âlockingâ the War Rig into a small horizontal space. It doesnât feel expansive, it feels congested, looming. It feels small, and perhaps even intimate.
âŚif you want to be intimate with something that creepy.
Compare to the âcloseâ feeling of this scene which Iâve talked about before in reference to culture and tying together three generations of War Boys:

Male Gaze, composition choices, and Mad Maxâs âlocker roomâ eye
So there was this one reblog on that post where I discussed Center framing, Composition, and Male Gaze with this comment:
The comment continues in typical mansplaining manner but I want to address this first bit specifically. Because the assumption that the women are framed that way because itâs an action shot is wrong from a technical standpoint.
There is a difference between Wanda gesturing with her hands almost having no space for her head in a composition that highlighted her breasts âŚ
âŚand the way Tony is given âheadroomâ while gesturing with his hands (see: any Iron Man Trailer). He still has his face prominent at the sweet spot of the Golden Ratio (for more discussion on what/where this is scroll down to the diagrams), his hands are on the other sweet spot, and itâs a very dynamic pose with great use of diagonals both foreground and background.
There is also a difference between Natasha almost having to bend her head so that her face stays on the screen while her chest and hips land in the sweet spotsâŚ
And the headspace that is given Thor. Thorâs face lands on upper Third (Rule of Thirds). They are both holding/threatening with weapons.Â
But wait! you say, what if we want to emphasize the weapons?
Yeah thereâs a way to do that too, without sexualizing your character and smashing their head almost off the frameâŚ
Keep reading
I enjoyed Age of Ultron, but these are some very excellent points. Also, am I wrong in thinking that in Iron Man 2, when Natasha is going down that hallway, beating the crap out of the guys in it, that a lot of the focus is more on her face? Not entirely, but more than it is here? Oh⌠oh. I just looked it up (thanks Tumblr for the the new gif feature!)
âŚ.my eye goes to her face but also her boobs. Itâs hard for me to analyze in a moving gif though why hat is, other than the top with a great big triangle of flesh screaming LOOK DOWN.  (the coloring may or may not be altered in this gif, too, like an upped contrast that is aiding that, idk) Sheâs also more off-center than I realized in this shot. Itâs like this technique is so common I canât even see it unless Iâm looking for it o_O
The term youâre looking for here is diagonal composition. Where are the diagonals pointing?
Look again at the background spaces behind Thor and Tony, the arches are pointing at Thorâs face and the architecture is pointing at the repulsor. Now go look at what the edges of the building is doing for Wanda and Natasha.
Im on mobile and on a break, but Google âdiagonal composition in photographyâ if you want to look into the effects of diagonals more. Itâs a bit more advanced than golden rule framing but not by much. (Though I would hesitate to do composition analysis on that shot off a cropped gif, you still canât get away from the diagonals.)
Ooh thank you! That actually makes total sense to me, because Iâve worked in picture framing before, and a lot of that is about: âare you bringing the eye in, or out? What are you drawing the eye towards, if you are drawing it in or out?â (because you donât want to draw the eye towards the frame, usually â you want to draw it towards the picture or objects, or a specific part or aspect of the picture or objects). Though in the case of picture framing itâs usually more simple, in that itâs more on an actual outline or series of asymmetrical outlines it still serves the same function: to point the eye towards whatâs in the âcenterâ. So now that youâve pointed that out, I can see it at work. :) This also makes me suddenly realize that the reason they make so many female charactersâ tops zip down isâŚeven MORE male gazey than I thought >_> âhey look, my clothing is not only showing actual boobflesh, itâs also pointing towards my waist and hips and crotch!â
Getting off my ass and finally posting these because Iâd finally gotten a free picture editor that did what I wanted it to. All AOU caps come from the main trailer, The IM2 screencap comes from one of the trailers.
Look at where the womenâs faces are. Then look at the menâs. That area is called the upper/lower thirds and where youâd put scrolling titles and name cards:
(the rest of the discussion including how some of the most potentially objectifying moments in Fury Road is subverted by composition/blocking/lighting)

Friendly reminder classic moments like these with the kids are entirely unscripted.
my heart exploded
âAmy Poehler was new to SNL and we were all crowded into the seventeenth-floor writersâ room, waiting for the Wednesday night read-through to start. [âŚ] Amy was in the middle of some such nonsense with Seth Meyers across the table, and she did something vulgar as a joke. I canât remember what it was exactly, except it was dirty and oud and âunladylikeâ, Jimmy Fallon [âŚ] turned to her and in a faux-squeamish voice said, âStop that! Itâs not cute! I donât like it.â Amy dropped what she was doing, went black in the eyes for a second, and wheeled around on him. âI donât fucking care if you like it.â Jimmy was visibly startled. Amy went right back to enjoying her ridiculous bit. With that exchange, a cosmic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasnât there to be cute. She wasnât there to play wives and girlfriends in the boysâ scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not fucking care if you like it.â

This one never gets old.
Society tries to police how Women behave and present ourselves by mocking us, belittling us, shaming us, or asking us what people will think of us.Â
âWhat will your boyfriend/future husband/potential friends/employer/mother/grandmother/father/grandfather think?â
A very powerful way to reject this policing of us is to say we donât care what people think, especially since that is often the way we are policed.Â
