Very unusual but infallible litmus test is observing the movies and real life events where people draw the line at animal cruelty/ death. its so common to see people acting like theyre enlightened for being more devastated at animals suffering than humans or valuing animal lives over humans and every time the reasoning leads up to something crazy like. seemingly innocent and positive sentiment: "animals dont deserve to be harmed or killed because they cant be evil". Looks inside. deeply misanthropic and reactionary reasoning: "some humans are evil and evil humans do deserve to be harmed and killed". Oh ok then whos deciding which people are evil. How do make sure theyre getting adequately abused who gets to do the job. just anyone whos been wronged? Exclusively good souls? cops?

something about the english translations of the homeric poems is that im almost 100% sure english just doesnt have a word that directly translates the greek aoidos so every time the text mentions aoidoi its translated to “bards” even though bards (celtic) as real historical figures would only appear in record many many centuries later and with a different function as far as i know. in ptbr there is a word for bard and a different word for the specific role of aoidoi and this is probably the case in many other languages
