when she was a child, her parents moved from a tiny, tiny town in a philippine province. it was painfully quiet there, no match for a girl of such fierce intellect and vision as enora. they moved to metropolitan luzon, revelled in the shiny newness of f*rdinand m*rcos' presidency. all its promises of modernity and social advancement.

and then it became more restrictive, more draconian. her journalist parents, once staunch supporters of a man they deemed to be an agent of progress, spoke out on national news. the government forcibly shut down the station. enora’s parents realized they had to flee. they took their kids. they rowed a boat to mindanao, then to indonesia, then flew to france when philippine authorities were busy scouring their neighboring countries to find these wanted persons.

enora changed her name to the french-sounding enora abel (with ‘pagatpat,’ an indigenous surname, inserted in official documents but never mentioned by her when in public.) her parents encourage her to be quiet, to blend in. her coloring and features would always give her away as a ‘foreigner’ no matter how fluent in french she became, or how much she assimilated, but she could carve something of a decent, new life if she just stayed quiet! however, norette wants to live free. she would die just to live free. she has grandiose ambitions and she has not given them up. she believes that the dictator back home will not reign forever. (and indeed, four years from the in-universe date of 1985, he’ll be booted from office and exiled.)
