This post is prompted by absolutely nothing but I’m thinking about how probably the saddest book I’ve ever read in my life was an authorized (?) prequel to Anne of Green Gables that I got as an audiobook from the library as a child and that is just pure unrelenting misery from start to finish. Just this brutal episodic narrative about a small orphan girl being shuffled from family to family that can neither love nor keep her. And while you do know that she’s ultimately fine because that’s the plot of Anne of Green Gables, it turns out it’s more fun to read a happy book with an offscreen tragic backstory than it is to read a play-by-play of a tragic backstory with an offscreen happy ending. Or so I thought at the time. Anyway, here are two things I vividly remember from this book:

When Anne is an infant and her parents die of fever, she is taken in by their cleaner (I’m vaguely thinking over the desires of other biological family who would have kept her) who lives in poverty with several other children and an alcoholic abusive husband. When circumstances change (I think because the husband dies), and the woman decides to send Anne away, she thinks to herself that all that she had really wanted was a token by which to remember the warmth and love she had felt in the Shirleys’ household and that it would have been just as well to have taken a book or a candlestick as the baby Anne. Jesus Christ.

One of the motifs of the book is Anne collecting and losing a series of precious objects. In one early-ish scene she struggles with the decision to give a beloved teddy bear away to a boy who has been like a baby brother to her and who she will never see again. At the end of the book when she moves into the orphanage, she has only a small box in which to hold her personal effects and has to get rid of everything that doesn’t fit, and she thinks to herself that she’s glad she chose to give it away voluntarily rather than have it unceremoniously taken from her now.

The other thing I'm doing to calm myself down is speculative online shopping which is how I wound up making myself in the American Girl doll-maker. I'm not going to buy this but I am exceedingly charmed by one of the six outfit choices being this stereotypical 2010s teenage lesbian look.

As is unfortunately often the case, I'm at a moment in my life where I'm stressed out and on a dysregulated sleep schedule and as a side effect I've gotten briefly totally addicted to a genre I'm thinking of as Instagram cozyslop. I keep opening the website just to rewatch these videos.
