Please don't do what the book fandom did
Okay so, some brief thoughts about Wylan Van Eck, now that he's finally been cast for season 2, and what the new show fandom should avoid.
I've been a fan of the Grishaverse since I was young, and read SoC for the first time in 2020, and from the parts of the internet i've seen, people have treated Wylan like shit.
Yes he is a beloved character, but he's constantly infantilised for his dyslexia and for being gay. People dumb him down to little uwu illiterate gay bb, so much so that people see him as a 'cinnamon roll' and etc etc.
It's usually the same people who's being abelist towards Wylan that shit on Book!Mal for his misspelled tattoo and being illiterate as well, which just sits wrong with me?
The book fandom has many flaws, but from my personal point of view, the biggest are; 1: excusing the darkling and 2: whatever the fuck they're putting Wylan through.
Yes, large parts of the book fandom may be great and after the show, the general Grishaverse fandom became really good, or at least from what I've seen.
As a gay man, I can only really speak on the homophobia surronding Wylan and his sexualisation/infantilisation around him, and the concerns about the abelism with his dyslexia is only really statements that I've seen other fans, which this afffect, express.
All in all, I'm excited for the casting, they all seem great for their roles, and I'm hoping for a good season 2 <3
TLDR; The book fandom has infantilised Wylan due to his dyslexia and being gay, I'm tired of it, and hoping with season 2 that people kindly stop
