Here Comes the Thunder:Â Deity Spotlight: Thor! : My Experiences and More!
Welcome to my witchy weirdness!
Now, disclaimer here: Â I do not claim to know everything or anything. Â I donât claim that my way is the right way or the wrong. Â This is just my way that works for me and I thought Iâd share it with you. Â Feel free to tweak it to your own needs but lord, here we go.
If youâd like to read more of the Witchy Weirdness series, you can find the masterlist HERE Â :)
For todayâs post, we will be talking all about the Norse god, Thor.
Now itâs been asked/ requested that I maybe do some deity spotlights or talk about what gods/goddesses that I resonate with.
So today, since itâs Thursday or THORSDAY!!!âŚ.. weâre talking about Thor.
Now, for me this is my main dude, here.
Heâs my main âmasculineâ god.
Now, before we get started I would like to clear something up.
Now, if youâve been around for a while yaâll know that Iâm a huge Marvel fan.
This is not about Marvelâs adaptation of Thor, lol.
I mean, I adore Chris Hemsworth and I think heâs a perfect little ball of sunshine.
I also think heâs great to play the CHARACTER Thor from the comicsâŚ.but these are two TOTALLY different playing fields here, lol.
I think Hemsworth is spot on for the character from Marvel but for me, as far as appearance goesâŚhe couldnât be more different, lol.
I mean, for one, my Thor is a red head.
And yaâll know my littled mixed ginger ass connected the fuck outta that when I was a child, lol.
If I had to pick any celebrity to play him Iâd probably go with Sheamus from WWE because heâs a badass and that dude is massive.
This is all besides the point! Geez, rambles.
Just thought Iâd throw that out there.
Thor is a Norse god known most popularly as the God of Thunder.
However, he is soooo much more than that.
Iâm gonna give you guys a break down here and then weâll touch on how I first began to work with him and what my personal experience is like as well as a few other little tidbits.
He is known as the god of thunder, lightning, storms, protection, fertility, wisdom, strength, abundance, just to name a few.
He is a hammer wielding storm / weather god of sky and thunder.
He is known strongly for  his protection of Asgard and mankind.
Ok, so now that weâve got that little tidbit out there, we can move on to how my first experiences with Thor and how he came to be one of my main gods.
Now, itâs important to know that I am an eclectic witch.
This means that I do not adhere to a 'specificâ pantheon of gods.
I.e. Only Greek gods or only Roman gods or only Egyptian gods.
I resonate with several of them and itâs a total mixture.
However, Thor is one of my main dudes, lol.
Something to know about me is that I love the rain.
Rain, storms, all of that.
My sister is absolutely terrified of them.
So naturally, as a child I was very, very excited when bad weather was on the horizon.
Even if it was serious enough that we had to go to the storm houseâŚ.the electricity in the air just about made me go crazy.
Ask anyone who had to deal with me as a child.
My Granny just about beat the hide off my tale on more that one occasion because I was trying to dance in the middle of a storm.
Mind you, my teeny tiny self happened to be standing in the middle of a wide flat field and of courseâŚlightning strikes the tallest thing.
Hell, I wouldâve taken the lightning strike over the ass whooping I got, lol.
Anyway, this was something that was very exciting to me and I loved it.
Also, I am an insomniac and I maybe sleep 3-4 hours a night.
Iâve always been that way and when I do go to sleep itâs incredibly hard for me to stay that way.
This is because I have a lot of energy and my mind just feels like thereâs electricity constantly pulsing through it.
HoweverâŚ.thunderstorms would put me out.
Sure, I got excited and riled up.
My energy was always at full levels and Iâd get tired eventually.
So when the rain was on the roof and there was thunder in the distanceâŚ.Iâd flat out sleep for twelve hours without issue.
It was such a weird little phenomenon that everyone who took care of me kept one of those soothing sounds cdâs with thunderstorms on it to play when I had to go to sleep because it put me out like a LIGHT.
So that was sort of my first interactions with him as a child and then I didnât really put two and two together until I got a little older.
I met Jared who was first very serious relationship and a person I spent over a decade with and is a big part of my life now.
He introduced me to Norse mythology and I put that together with what my Granny had taught me.
I wonât bore you with all the sap but to put it plainâŚ.I was being teased for being a redhead.
AndâŚyaâll Iâm not just any redheadâŚIâm a curly red head.
Like, geeezzzzzzz, and once you get to a certain part of the year in the southâŚ
Well the humidity turns this hair absolutely crazy.
Anyway, I was getting teased and I was kinda pissy about it.
Typically, when I get mad, the tears kind of start to form which is never a good sign because itâs usually the warning sprinkles before a storm.
Yet, another connection I have to Thor.
Anyway, Jared, bless his soul, took me to the library and weaved me through to the restricted section where anything that wasnât vanilla and Jesus wasâŚ.which was a whole LOT.
Thatâs a small town in the bible belt for you though.
So anyway, we get back there and this guy had basically hidden away some books that he liked and out he comes with this book of Norse mythology.
It was so old that in places it was totally falling apart.
He flips through until he lands on a page with this badass red headed bearded guy looking so fucking rad.
Jared laughed at me and told me my face was hilarious.
I returned with some choice words that I wonât repeat.
I immediately wanted to check the book out but he told me that if I did theyâd probably make a fuss and throw it away.
So I did the only logical thing a thirteen year old girl who was upset would do.
No, I didnât steal it, you heathens!
I actually waited for the librarian to go potty and then I left a crumpled five dollar bill (that Iâm fairly sure probably had some kind of candy residue on it) on the table with a pack of gum. Â Fruit stripe to be specific.
Look, donât judge me! Â I was trying to do the right thing! Â If you take something, you leave something!
Anyway, so I basically took this thing home and devoured it within a night.
I meanâŚ.I was obsessed.
I mean, my grandmother (not my Granny) is an EXTREMELY pentacostal woman who has a little bit of a tendency to be on a damn witch hunt anyway.
I loved that book though and I do still have it today but itâs so old that I just canât bare to keep it out.
Itâs special to me so I keep it wrapped up in a quilt in my hope chest.
Yes, I have a hope chest.
Iâm southern. Â Itâs a thing, lol.
So anyway, I remember being very, very into all of this and it just became an obsession of mine to learn as much about Norse mythology and specifically Thor as I could.
Eventually, I came across the comics and I did fall in love with those for a different reason but thatâs neither here nor there.
When I discovered that Thor was a god of protectionâŚ.I was hooked.
You have to understand that I found Thor in a time in my life when I was being abused very, very heavily. Â
Extremely abusive or basically non existent.
And in those non existent moments, I was still being sexually abused.
Itâs not something I talk about a lot but it happened and Iâve made my peace with it.
However, as I began to really focus on Thor (Not that I really knew that I was practicing at that time in my life) I had a lot of things going on.
You have to understand this is also around the time period that my Granny (the woman who had a really profound effect on my young life and my beginnings of the craft) died and I was going through a lot.
I canât say that my progression with Thor was very fast at all because I had a lot going on and I was quite young but that was kind of the beginnings of it.
Now, it actually wasnât until after Pap died that I really started to focus.
I was technically an adult at this point and things had really been put into perspective for me in a lot of ways.
By the way, if youâd like to kind of read about that experience and my whole beginnings with magic then you can totally check out Bobcat and Raven on my Magical Masterlist linked above to fill you in. :)
So, anyway, thatâs kind of a few of my experiences with Thor and for those of you that are curious here are some other little notes of my experience with him as one of my gods.
Also, all of this is MY experience. It does not mean that you will or should have that experience with him. Â This is just my personal experiences.
Heâs a very, very good god for me in so many ways.
For me personally, heâs vey direct with me.
Very deep at times but direct.
For example, heâs never been one to tell me that he constantly wants things and for a long time he didnât even let me know that he wanted an altar.
I didnât have one for the longest time and his place with me was literally a little bundle of sage.
Note: Â Sage is known for protection. Â Since Thor is a god of protection, itâs something I use for him A LOT. Â
However, it became fairly obvious that he wanted a space when I kept seeing things that I felt resonated with him.
Also, it wasnât like an add popped up on my computer telling me to buy him an 800 dollar item or something.
It was suuuuuuper simple things like:
-Finding goat plushies at goodwill for a quarter a piece (Thor has two goats and itâs a whole thing, lol)
-Or finding an oak candle holder at a yard sale for a dime (Heâs very closely associated with oak. Â Stength, resilience, durability, endurance)
-Finding sage seeds on sale when all the fall stuff came out
- Winning a free membership to a beer of the month club (That one was particularly direct, lol)
- Being invited to a breadmaking class (Thatâs a fertility thing)
-Renfest is a huge one.  I mean, holy fuck, heâs so active around that time and Iâm just likeâŚ.Dude, chill.  Iâm going.  Iâm going.  I honestly think itâs because I have the opportunity to be around like minded people and he knows that I need that sometimes.  Itâs also a chance to buy from witchy vendors and support each other. Â
Just very small things that often times cost nothing or very little at all.
Offerings to your gods doesnât mean that it just has to go up there and never touch it. Â I offer it to my gods and honor them through using it and keeping them with me. Â Thatâs just be personally but ya know. Â
Now as far as crystals and herbs I keep around in association with Thor it really does depend on you personally but for myself I use:
Herbs: Â Sage (Big one), Tobacco leaf, garlic, bay leaf. Â It really does just depend on what Iâm doing though to be honest.
Foods: Â Now, I know that goat can be common because if you look into mythology youâll see that Thor could kill and eat his goats and as long as the bones remained in tact they would come back to life the next day. Â Iâm vegetarian though, so thatâs kind of a no go for me. Â HOWEVER, I do put out goat cheese and goatâs milk products. Â So y
know. Â To each is own.
Mead or Beer is a big one. Â Thatâs what I was saying about the beer of the month thing. Â That was honestly the most perfect thing Iâd ever seen in my life.
Hearty vegetables like onions, garlic, potatoes, leeks, different things.
Crystals: Now I canât say that heâs ever been suuuuuper calling to crystals for me. Â I did feel compelled to put this little piece of crystal quartz with a rune carved into it on his space. Â The only other ones I have there are astrophyllite.
This stoneâŚIâll be honest, I had no fucking clue and this bitch just jumped out at me one day when I got to visit a witchy shop in New Orleans. Â
This woman didnât know me from Adam but she was like, just randomly, âThis is probably gonna sound a little weird, even for me, but do you happen to have any kind of links with Thor?â
I literally gasped lol. Â She took it as a yes and she was just like, âWell, technically I donât really have these in the system yet but I did hear you talking about how you and your friends would only be here for a few days. Â I have some astrophyllite. Â Itâs a storm element stone.â
I was hooked and I wanted it bad.  She was actually very cool and let me go to the back of the store and just gel with what she had in stock.  I mean, she was cool as hell about it all seeing as how she really didnât even have it in the system yet.  Thatâs why I tell yaâllâŚ.we find each other, lol.
Anyway, so I ended up kind of stocking up because this woman had such good vibes and pretty decent prices.
When I got home I discovered that this mofo is like a super stone in the sense that it connects to the soul star chakra over your head and then earth star chakra below your feet. Â Basically, it activates the whole column. Â How fucking cool is that shit?!
Anyway, it strengthens, aligns, charges, removes blockages, brings in high frequency light and all kinds of things. Â
And heâs been fairly clear that he wants that associated with him. Â
It also assists in expansion to higher dimensions and astral travel which is perfect because while Thor is protective âŚheâs also adventerous and he does his thing through the nine realms.
And for me thatâs about all I do with him and stones . Â It does work well for me though.
Thatâs not to say that there arenât others out there. Â This is just what I use.
Symbols:
Hammer (obviously, lol)
Goats (for his goats), Anything storm/weather related (He is the god of thunder after all),
Rainbows for me sometimes just depending on what it is. For me itâs both about the bridge and also because Thor gives me hope in my dark moments of depression. Â He brings the rain to cleanse my soul and then gives me a little rainbow to make me smile.
Runes: I do usually have some runes that I carved from wood there as well.
You may find this weird but I actually keep a lock of my hair in itâs natural color on his space because we are gingers and it was only through him that I really kind of come to love and accept that part of myself.
Now, you can always put bones there if youâd like. Â Itâs really up to your personal preference. Â I donât usually. Â Thatâs usually for someone else and I make sure itâs all things that I found out walking so that no one was harmed.
Now, myself, I did put my wisdom teeth in a little pouch up there because I went through hell and back with those things.
Especially considering the fact that I have allergies to a lot of pain medsâŚand I kinda just had to fucking tough it out while they got rid of them.
So because I went through that much painâŚI was taking those fuckers with me and I put those up there as a symbol of strength.
Something I am working on getting for him is a drinking horn. Â Iâm a bit picky because I do want it to be naturally shed and cruelty free so itâll be more expensive and done my way, so ya know.
Guys, lol, but it literally just started raining and thereâs thunder in the distance.
Think heâs pleased with me?
Iâd like to think so, lol.
Anyways, this was just another little witchy ramble and I hope it helped.
Iâll try to do some of my other gods and goddesses here and there when I can.
I know Iâm all over the place and if youâve made it this far well then bless your soul and I love you to the moon and back.
Thank you for reading! May all the light in the world find you!
