Drawing based photography - so fun!!!
THE FLOODING OF VENICE
Science predicts a future of global warming, rising sea levels and likely conflicts over resources. There may come a time when many parts of the world will become unliveable, flooded and abandoned.
The Flooding of Venice represents this future as a series of photographs, especially developed and created for the current exhibition at the Palazzo Mora, Time Space Existence, as part of the Architecture Biennale in Venice.
Working with a scale-model replica of the main gallery space, the Artist created photographs that depict sequentially â and in great detail â the Palazzo becoming increasingly derelict.
The Artistâs aim is to challenge the accepted ârealityâ of the photograph, in particular the architectural photograph, and to highlighting concerns about climate change and misinformation.
Ahead of the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, we preview the Australian and New Zealand exhibitors of a collateral event Time Space Existence.

My darlings! I have been busy making a video and planning my crowdfunding campaign for the Venice exhibition! How exciting!! It will be going live within DAYS :) yay!!
A selection of previous works, which are relevant to the Venice project...
Urban AU-2 residency, Stattbad Wedding, Berlin, 2013
âThe Secret Life Of Buildingsâ
In this project I used the exposed blank fire-walls of Berlinâs quintessential Stadthaus building typology as the site for intervention. With a built model of a typical Stadhaus I created a series of staged photographs, imagining the activities occurring within the private domains within each building. I then staged rougue projections around the city onto selected firewalls, altering buildings, erasing walls, to reveal their inner life.
The residency was investigating and showcasing street art, so I created a hybrid of street art, photography and architectural intervention, âThe Private Life Of Buildingsâ Â blurs the line of urban public and private domains; introducing a range of inner stories into the street life of the city.
Urban AU, Gallery of Australian Design, Canberra, 2011 Â
'behind this wall 2â
Picture the feeling of putting your hand to the wall and feeling it pulsate like a living creature, it is something comparable to what is happening by allowing the viewer to see through the structure in one small part, the whole of the structure becomes alive, transparent and clear in ones imagination, which will invariably spin something incredible.
In the Gallery of Australian Design the space directly behind the wall of the proposed installation is a service space, largely left raw. This service space was photographically documented, measured and recreated as an architectural model at 1:20 scale. The maquette was then filmed and projected back onto the wall within the gallery at 1:1 scale, revealing the space behind, in effect âerasingâ the wall.
The oscilation between the reduced scale of the maquette and the actual scale of the gallery is deliberatly indistict, encouraging the viewer to assume the projection is a 'realâ photograph of the space 'beyond the wallâ. This assumption and the perception of scale within the work and and its context is shattered, when a giant mouse runs through the apparently static scene, provoking a critical reassessment of the perceived truth in image media.
Gertrude Contemporary Art Space, Melbourne, 2008.
âInversionsâ
The stairwell access to the upstairs gallery and studios were photographically recorded, digitally modelled, transformed via digital manipulation and (re)presented within the site (the stairwell). The manipulated image is in fact a photographic inversion of the viewers position â the space is photographically bent so that the viewer is looking back at where they are viewing from. This work has remained a permanent fixture under the staircase leading from the gallery to the studios.
Centre for Contemporary Photographyâs Night Projection Window, Melbourne, 2008.
âProjection Windowâ
Developed specifically for the CCP, the project takes the existing site as the subject for enquiry. I photographed the entire facade of the CCP, stitched it all together into one long panorama, and then cropped it corresponding to the top and bottom edge of the projection window screen. The video gadually revealed  the length of the CCPâs facade, including the representation of the projection screen and window itself. The confines of the space were extended to incorporate both viewer and surrounding architecture

â1:20â
A model replica (at 1:20 scale) of the 3 rooms of the gallery space were physically transformed via installations and alterations.
(For example: in one room of the model we created an excavation site of a space shuttle. Because of the myth surrounding local collective âc-baseâ whoâs headquarters were in the same street as the gallery.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-base)
The photographs were projected onto the walls of the gallery space. Objects placed in the space, like a shovel and bucket as well as sand piles added to the illusion through associative coherence.

The Flooding Of Venice
I tried to forget and move on.
But I could not.
SO
I have started to make it! I have been talking to people and I will be crowd funding and finding sponsorship.
Even if it does not make it to Venice, I am creating it.Â
