one tip for writing a nonbinary character with multiple pronouns:

don’t ignore some of their pronouns.

and most importantly:

DON’T IGNORE SOME OF THEIR PRONOUNS!

SERIOUS ADVICE THO - this isn’t to say you need to use all of a characters pronouns. just DO NOT pretend they are cis or only one gender. a character can have ANY reason for using/testing multiple pronouns and it can be a key part of their identity when it counts. if you choose to give them multiple pronouns see where you can put it to use, for example which other characters use what pronouns or which pronouns said character will use in different situations.

Seeing criticism towards shows like Steven Universe for its imperfect rep and stories feels weird to me. Because the series is thirteen years old and was... ahead of its time.

Sailor Moon is considered a feminist media that changed the magical girl and shojo genre forever. But if it released today? Some parts of it would be seen as misogynistic I think. It would at the very least feel very dated. Behind. It would not rock the world as it did during its original release.

And honestly? Neither would Steven Universe I think... and I think that is a GOOD thing. It means we've changed and our rep has gotten better... to a point where Steven Universe CAN FEEL BEHIND. Sailor Moon CAN FEEL BEHIND.

One can learn the wrong way to represent a group of people, things to AVOID. It is much harder to learn... what is BEST for representation. Even when you are a PART of that group. Especially when you don't have good examples to go off of of other people doing it RIGHT. We build off of each other. We look at someone avoiding the wrong things but maybe they still did another thing wrong and we can look at it and say lets not do that.

If things that were ahead of their time (in a good way) stop becoming dated that means we've stopped learning from our predecessors and remained stagnant. I hope no matter how hard I try and how much effort and research is put in my work will become dated too. Because that means something better came along. And I just hope I become someone who helps to inspire that something better.

Idk not that you can't criticize these media but I see some people take it to such a hateful degree and I'm like... I wonder how Sapphos love poems would be received now? Would you completely remove them from their historical context and significance too? 🫤 maybe now I'm being hyperbolic. - MK

BE CURIOUS ABOUT BIAS!!!

it’s gotta be said. aight? aight.

literally everyone has learned, internalised, unchecked bias. it is taught by society first and foremost, which extends to our parents, peers and educators. it is our responsibility (YES) to unlearn that shiet. you can be racist or promote racism without meaning to. you can be queer/transphobic and promote queer/transphobia without meaning to. same goes for ageism and adultism and ableism and all bigotry under the sun.

THIS is what the blog is mostly for. accounting for unchecked bias. actually listening to people who want to unlearn that, or are just simply confused. you don’t need any fancy terminology to be curious, LITERALLY THE ONLY RULE IS TO BE RESPECTFUL. being curious is one of the most basic human functions so we offer anyone to be curious about anything!

if you’re worried about being insensitive, BE FUCKING INSENSITIVE! you can’t unlearn shit without knowing what shit you’re unlearning! ask people who give you a safe space to say something wrong! if anyone gives you a hard time for being curious or confused or insensitive where you didn’t mean to, it’s not your fault! Lesson One: Fact-Checking

Hey hey hey it's Maddy K here and something I notice a lot of people do not learn in school when it comes to doing their research is fact checking!

When looking at any source, here are some things you should consider:

Who is the author, creator, or director? Look them up, see if there are past cases of them leading scams or being inaccurate.

What are their qualifications toward the topic they are writing about.

Do they have personal experience with the subject. A disabled person discussing a disability they have may know more about what it is like to experience such than someone who doesn't. A person with a degree in environmental science will probably know more about the environment than someone who doesn't.

How might the authors background both inform or create biases that may affect the reliability of what they are saying?

Where is the source published? If it's a journal or scholarly article, what is the publisher's track record for reliability?

Who is the intended audience? Someone who will already agree with the author? Someone who will be enraged by what they are saying? Someone they wish to convince or inform?

What is the authors claim? What are they trying to tell you?

Do they use logic and facts, or are their words loaded with emotion to try and persuade you to feel a certain way?

How do they depict the opposite side of their argument? Do they engage with that side's ideas fairly and address critique toward their own viewpoint? Or do they ignore or misrepresent them entirely.

What is the tone the author uses?

DO THEY CITE THEIR SOURCES? ARE THOSE SOURCES RELIABLE?

This list is based on one originally crafted by my Navigating Information professor, though I've tried to paraphrase and make my own spin on it, please know that this list is not entirely original or my own. I am posting it for educational purposes only.

You need to ask who is writing this and what they are trying to say. Even if a source is inaccurate to reality it can still be useful for writers, for example reading works or watching videos made by people with a bigoted viewpoint will definitely be biased and inaccurate towards the group being discussed BUT if you're trying to understand how they think and talk in order to WRITE them better, well then that source can be USEFUL to you. I like to think every experience in life can be used as research to further your understanding of the world and people's behavior if you analyze it properly and put it with further research from both professionals and those who have direct experience with what you are talking about. If you gather information from a variety of sources you can eventually start to understand what is real and what isn't. I think at the end of the day this is something people do not understand about sources and fact-checking really.

Now, does it sound exhausting to have to this for every source? Yeah it totally is. It really depends on what you are researching and how deep you want to go. How important each piece of research is to the greater picture of what you are writing about :) - MK

FORWARDING THIS! fact checking is extremely important! when we think of our ocs as kids we don’t fact check anything because they’re just silly ideas, but if you’re determined to make a project people will SEE, YA GOTTA FACT CHECK.

it’s impossible to research EVERYTHING about a topic, and lots of websites have unfair bias, but you CAN find the right information. whether or not you possess or experience something your character DOES, it’s important to look it up anyway. to make sure you’re representing them properly, or it’s just accurate enough for the context of the character.

this also goes for when you’re consuming things, ESPECIALLY when you make an au. the artist behind your favourite thing can either be the most woke activist ever or a literal piece of shit. when you consume those things, whatever an artist thinks or feels about a topic will SHOW in their art. such as politics! ART IS POLITICAL. if someone has bad intent with their character IT WILL SHOW.

for example, the best black representation will either come from a black artist who has little internalised racism, or a white artist who is EDUCATED on race. (obviously not the only examples im MAKING A POINT). neurodivergent representation may feel more real to some coming from an neurodivergent artist (who experiences it) compared to a neurotypical one who needs to base a character off of the experiences of other people.

when it comes to sources it all boils down to the intent, and the execution. as MK said, who is writing it and what they want to say. when it comes to your own original thing, it’s good to think about who you are and what you want to say. because even if you try not to intend or convey anything, you will. better to have an intended message than a message you didn’t think about at all. :]
