She had changed completely, Elijah knew. And yet, the young woman before him looked exactly the same, except for her constant anger nowadays, sometimes accompanied with t e a r s in her eyes. Elijah himself was hurting. He was hurting for his brother, for Hayley, for himself. They were all forced to live without Hope for the time being, but on top of that, Hayley had also become a hybrid. Only Niklaus could be of comfort to her right now. Still, Elijah wanted to offer Hayley some comfort, too. The bond they shared was different from the  one she shared with Niklaus, and Elijah was hoping that with the two of them around her, Hayley would at least learn to cope with the loss of her baby and her new self. He knocked softly on the already opened door of her room, and walked inside, but still kept his distance. He had to be cautious, one wrong move could mean upsetting her, or angering her, and it was the l a s t thing Elijah wanted.

❝Hayley, I am going out shortly to take care of some business, but Niklaus should be back soon so you won’t be alone for too long. Do you need anything?❞

Elijah didn’t have time to think over his decision about coming to New Orleans. All that mattered to him was being by his brother’s side, as well as finding out w h o it was exactly that had dared to threaten him. Most likely someone very foolish or very desperate.  He figured the best way to start his investigation would be to a s k around. Roussau’s seemed like the perfect place, and so here he was. Sitting at the bar, with a martini before him, and talking to the v e r y pleasant bartender.

❝Camille, is it? I haven’t been to this city in what feels like a hundred years, and I was hoping that you would be able to help me out with some questions I have. You see, my brother and I just moved back here, and we both have some catching up to do. Have you lived here long?❞

He hadn’t seen her in over a  y e a r, but with everything that had happened upon Elijah’s arrival in New Orleans, it felt as if centuries had passed since the day when he had once again chosen  his brother over the woman he loved and left for New Orleans. Now, Katherine was standing before him, and Elijah was u n a b l e to read her, to guess why exactly she had come all the way h e r e. Was it for him? Or was she once again running from  someone or something?

❝What are you doing in New Orleans, Katherine? I imagined you’d be somewhere far away by now, Europe perhaps. What has happened?❝

There wasn’t much else these days that Elijah did other that look after his niece. Hope was everything to him. She was an escape to all of his i n n e r struggles and one look at her innocent face was more than enough to make Elijah forget about everything that was happening in the city with Dahlia’s arrival.  When Elijah walked into Hope’s nursery, seeing Stefan Salvatore didn’t exactly surprise him. Ever since  he had arrived to New Orleans, Stefan had proved himself to be of great help when it came to keeping Hope safe, and even though it took Niklaus some time to get used to him, Elijah had no problem  putting a l l of his trust into  Stefan. He appreciated that he was willing to risk his own life in order to keep Niklaus’ offspring protected, even if he was doing it in order to  escape his own demons back in Mystic Falls.

❝ It appears she likes you very much. Usually she is only quiet when she is with her mother. I realized that we have yet to thank you for everything you’ve done for our family, Stefan. My brother may not show it, but I know he is endlessly grateful.❞

Supernatural hearing wasn’t a l w a y s an advantage, Elijah realized. He had just recently moved in with Niklaus in Mystic Falls, and he was already regretting that decision. He thought  living with his brother would give him the opportunity to keep an eye on him, make sure he doesn’t get into one of his moods and  go on a killing spree, but instead, Niklaus was spending most of the day locked inside his room with a new toy that usually ended up as his dinner afterwards. Elijah certainly did n o t approve of his brother’s lifestyle, but he had no intention of lecturing him on how he spent his free time when they had much important matters to tend to. When he simply couldn’t stand the noise any longer, Elijah left the house and spent the next few hours outdoors, hoping that his brother’s companion would be soon gone. However, when he returned, he was welcomed by a s t r a n g e r in the living room, with her back turned to him. Despite his growing irritation, Elijah chose to be polite. The least he could do was make sure to warn her to never associate with Niklaus again. 

❝ My brother did not inform me we would be having any visitors, otherwise I would’ve made sure someone was here to welcome you.❞
