She’d heard his sad little explanation already a hundred times. Or at least it felt like that. Truthfully she’s only really let him apologize once before deciding that for her own peace of mind, it was time to walk away and stop talking to him. Addison had a strong will and she knew that he was the only one with the power to break it. They both needed to move on and that was only going to happen if she started pretending like he didn’t exist. All these years later and just sitting next to him in the elevator made her heart clench. She sighed softly and let her eyes fall to the floor, not wanting to look at him anymore for fear she’d lose her nerve. “It was stupid.” Even if Addi had tried to forgive Sadie, things had never been the same.

Her heart had never really healed from that devastation, as much as Addison pretended she didn’t have a heart, she did, and it was still trying to piece itself back together years later. “I wanted so much more for us, Noah.” She spoke quietly, keeping her eyes on her shoes and shaking her head with a sad smile. “I just needed more time and you didn’t have it to give I guess.” She shrugged and finally let herself look over at him, meeting his dark brown eyes and sighing softly. “I wish you’d had more time.”

He knew she had heard his apology before, but begging for her forgiveness is something that Noah never got to do. Not that he was thinking about doing it now, but at the time it’s all he wanted to do. Yet, one apology had been enough for the blonde woman. “I know,” he breathed the words, leaning his head back against the wall. They both knew it was stupid and yet, there were more times than he could count than that he ended up in bed with Sadie because of how he felt about Addison. And what a shitty move that was - every single time. 

Glancing over at her with her words, he let out a sigh. “Addison, I wish I had more time to give too,” he shook his head, “Every day you didn’t open up to me was another day that my heart couldn’t take. I gave -” Noah paused, rubbing his forehead, “Addison, I gave you everything that I could physically take. And I don’t regret it, trust me.” He looked over her, “Nothing about us I could ever regret but I couldn’t go on lovin’ you as much as I did and gettin’ nothin’ in return. It drained me.”

“Honestly, I’m amazed the two of you haven’t taken the entire state of Georgia by storm yet. Just runnin’ around breakin’ hearts and blessin’ all of us with your good looks.” Chesney couldn’t help but try and read more into Noah’s words, wondering if he really was hiding out on purpose, like maybe trying to avoid something. She’d known him her entire life, he was like her brother. She could read him pretty well most days. “Yeah? Well, let me know next time you go for a hike, I’d love to join you.”

Noah laughed, shaking his head. “I’m no Nicholas Gates,” he teased, “But Bree? She could do that all on her own.” He added with a growing smile, “Yeah?” He nodded his head, “You know I’d never turn down more company from you, Ches.” Noah was genuine with his words. “I know the girls miss you,” he teased, “I’m not sayin’ I can read their minds, but I can read their minds.”

The way her name sounded coming off Noah’s lips was intoxicating. She hated the effect he still had on her all these years later. No one ever got under her skin, she didn’t let anyone have that power over her, but the way Noah spoke to her always made her heart race. She looked over at him a second and tried to remember what it was that made her so angry for all those years. They’d broken up and though she had been devastated, she was never angry at him for that, it was her own fault they ended up there. But then came Sadie and everything had felt dirty and wrong after that. She’d accused him of nasty things like cheating and Addison still felt some guilt over that to this day. She let him talk, Addi hardly even knew what to say to him anymore. All the things that had happened since they broke up only made it harder. She sighed and dropped her head back against the wall, looking up at the ceiling silently.

“I let you in as much as I knew how to. And I’m sorry if that wasn’t enough for you.” Her words were biting but her tone was anything but. Addi hated the fact that she hadn’t been able to give him back the love he was pouring out to her. It made her crazy to think about. Noah was perfect, everything about him was good and kind and she’d fucked it up with her own insecurity. “But I don’t know if I can ever forgive you for sleepin’ with Sadie.” She finally looked over at him, speaking the words she’d never felt like she could say out loud before. “Did it have to be one of my friends, Noah? Seriously? Out of every desperate and sad girl in this stupid town, you had to pick Sadie?”

Noah shook his head at her words. It hadn’t been enough and that’s why he had forced himself to walk away. The man would have dug himself a grave over and over and over again to be with Addison. He would have continued to do whatever for Addison until he could no longer function. It was his downfall and it was that recognized downfall that had him walking away. Though, he hardly remembered it as walking. Noah felt like he had been ripping his own heart out of his chest. Forced to cut into the skin and rip it out while it was still beating. He remembered that pain, even now as he sat next to her in the elevator. 

He cleared his throat as he mentioned Sadie. That part was entirely on him. “I know,” he mumbled the words, not even wanting to look at her as he spoke. Yet, once more, he forced himself to do something that he did not want to. Noah had been entirely ashamed of the actions that led him to get tangled up in Sadie’s sheets. “I’ve never regretted anything more,” he admitted, swallowing hard with the words that barely made it over his lips. “I - We were both hurtin’?” Sadie’s relationship with her soon to be husband was not going in the direction that she wanted and well, Noah was heartbroken over Addison. “It - it was stupid of the both of us.” She had clearly forgiven Sadie after all these years, but that decision would come to haunt him for the rest of his life.

               “ what ? ” she’s trying not to laugh , but the sound bubbles out of her despite her efforts . “ you think that i wanted to step in dog shit , noah ? & ruin my new adidas ?? ” she’s giving his shoulder a playful shove as another chuckle escapes her . “ oh , yeah , you guessed it    i planned on making you starve today !! ” a moment later though & stevie displays a frown as she looks down at her baby blue & white soled adidas . “ fuck . guess they’re broken in now , hm ? ” she gives up trying to scrape the rest off for now & continues their stroll despite the smell of it lingering in the air around them . noah here was probably used to it giving his occupation & honestly , stevie didn’t let it ruin her mood ( she was pretty used to it as well , thanks to nyx , here ) .                 as nyx tugs her along , stevie huffs out a sigh . “ we could stop by my place so i could change shoes . ” she says after a seconds silence falls over them . “ i mean , god forbid i’m the reason we lose one of the best veterinarian’s in town to starvation , right ? ” she finishes with a grin . “ i suppose i could just wash these off , too … i guess . ” she’s a bit sour over having broken them in the way she had , but she wasn’t surprised . “ either way     no one is starving today , okay ? so don’t get your panties in a twist now … jeez , noah anyone ever tell you how damn dramatic you are ? ” she manages to get that last bit out without laughing despite her amusement due to his obviously jokingly dramatic reaction to the possibility of not grabbing a bit after their hike .

“I have no other reason to believe that was your intention in the first place,” he teased her, shaking his head with laughter. Of course, Noah didn’t really think that about Stevie, but what kind of friend would he be if he didn’t give her hard time about them not being able to get lunch afterwards because her shoes would leave a lingering smell no matter how hard she tried to clean them. “I knew it,” he laughed with her words. Noah continued to walk with her, the stench of her stepping in dog feces hardly bothering him. In fact, he had dealt with a lot worse down at the vet clinic, not that he wanted to have to admit that aloud. 

Looking over at her, he nods his head at her suggestion. “Okay, yeah, that’s a better idea than skipping lunch altogether,” he chuckled, “I’d hate for anyone to come after you for lettin’ me starve and wither away. I mean, I think the town might actually riot.” He told her with a playful nudge of his elbow to her arm. “Me? Dramatic?” He shook his head at her words, “I mean, I can’t believe you are goin’ around spreadin’ that rumor of me being dramatic,” despite it being the two of them in the woods with the dogs. “I am hurt, Stevie. Truly hurt.”

He looked over at Addison as she leaned against the wall. This is just great. She said those words aloud and well, Noah wasn’t going to disagree with them in the slightest. If he had a list of people that he didn’t want to be stuck in an elevator with, Addison would be right at the top. Probably paired with Sadie James. Addison. He had fallen in love with her, head over heels. Would have walked to the ends of the earth for her and at the end of the day? He was merely tossed aside by her inability to open up to him fully. And where did he find comfort when she broke his heart? Unfortunately, his irrational male brain led him straight to the bed of Sadie James. Engaged and friends with Addison. There were few instances in his life that Noah regretted and well, how everything happened, he wished he could go back and change it every single day. 

Watching as she slid down the elevator wall, finding a spot on the floor, he looked back at the doors, as if he was willing them to open. They wouldn’t - obviously. “It must be,” he muttered, his tongue flicking against his lips. He had never planned on talking to Addison either. Despite the number of times he wrote out what he would say. To try and find a way to make it right and then, every time he wrote something, he realized just how pointless it was. Addison would never love him the same way he loved her. “Karma sure did wait a long time to come bite me in the ass.” He muttered in return, finding himself on the spot next to her, though not too close. Standing was pointless - at least until they knew they were going to be rescued. 

Between the two of them, Noah was the one who deserved to feel hurt by their breakup. Even though he’d been the one to call it quits with them, it was Addi’s fault and she knew that. She’d been crazy about Noah Danvers but despite the confidence she exuded to everyone else, she’d never been brave enough to tell him how she felt or let him past her iron fences that protected her heart. It wasn’t for lack of trying, because the two had tried for years to get Addi to be able to let Noah love her, she’s just convinced herself that it wasn’t possible and that had driven a wedge between them that no amount of sex or laughs could undo. She wanted to fix things with him at first, she’d tried to figure out how she could deal with her own issues to be good enough for him. But then Sadie happened and Addison was sure she could never forgive him for that.

He slid down next to her and the blonde let her eyes slowly turn towards him, taking in his features for just a moment too long before she looked away again. “I think it’s me, she’s after.” Addison replied with a small smile, shaking her head. “We both know I’m the reason things didn’t work out for us, Noah.”

Noah looked over at her with the words she spoke. Addison really thought karma was after her? After what he did? Sure - Addison broke his heart, ripped it straight from his chest and well, she might as well stomped on it a few times too. “Addison,” he breathed her name, fighting back a familiar urge to reach out to comfort her with the touch of his hands. He hung them loosely over his knees, fingers tapping against one another before looking over at her again. “That’s not entirely true,” it was. To some degree. Addison wouldn’t let him in and well, he grew to a point where he just couldn’t try to break down those walls anymore. He didn’t know what the hell they were made out of, but he wasn’t getting to her heart, no matter how hard he tried. “Sure, you didn’t want to let me in,” his shoulders lifted in a shrug, “which really really sucked,” his lips parted in a low chuckle and he shook his head. His gaze wandered forward, staring at the doors that were locking them in the elevator, “I still regret what I did afterwards,” he couldn’t look at her in this moment, “I mean, God, I was so upset that I sought comfort in all the wrong places because, Addi, I didn’t think there was anyone else for me besides you.” 

The truth was that she couldn’t sleep and instead of laying in bed awake for hours, she needed to get up to distract her mind. She chewed on her lower lip, smirking over at the older man when hearing that playful growl. Neslyn shrugged her shoulders and leaned against the counter, pouting at Noah stole the beer from her. “You looked so content while you were sleeping, I would have hated to disturbed your beauty sleep,” she teased. “How’s that going to work out? The alarm would wake me up as well,” she mused. “Would you believe me if I said I had planned on cooking breakfast but I got distracted.”

“My beauty sleep, eh?” He chuckled, shaking his head. Noah lifted a hand, patting his cheeks with a soft tap, “S’pose it takes a certain number hours of rest to keep this face lookin’ as it does,” he teased her in response, “I’ll figure it out,” he smirked at her, knowing that she was more than right. His laughter came on as he shook his head, “Got distracted by beer and cold pizza? Over breakfast?” His eyes widened in astonishment over the fact, “I mean, how could you?”

NOAH: Happy Birthday, punk!

The topic of his sisters was an odd one to touch with Noah, and this was about as close as Deacon would ever get in that realm with the man. He knew better than to linger on it too long, but he wasn’t one to drastically change the topic of conversation unless it was absolutely necessary. “Yeah, most people forget but I like to think it’s what made me so damn endearing. I mean, you gotta learn how to get people to notice you as the middle child. Otherwise, you don’t get any love.” He laughed as he lifted his beer to his lips and drank from it. “Oh, I knew they were. If one of ‘em had been born a boy, I’d be in an altogether different boat.” Deacon adored his sisters, which only made joking about them more fun. “That’s kind of what I was thinkin’. You know how she gets with that girl. Ain’t another human being in the whole universe.” 

Noah nodded his head, though he didn’t completely understand being a middle child. He was the oldest and Bree was the youngest. It had always been the two of them. And at the end of the day, they would do anything for each other. “I think it did too,” he told him with a singular nod of his head. “I mean, you really rose above and stood out. I’ve heard the stories of the middle children just bein’ forgotten and all,” he shook his head, having clearly watched far too many unrealistic movies in his days. “I know, Bree hangin’ out with Chesney and suddenly, I feel a lot like a middle child,” he teased in response, shaking his head, “I mean, the two of them could not care less if I existed or not.” Noah was only kidding, knowing that both Chesney and Bree adored him as a sibling and family friend, but he couldn’t help but give shit about it, and he would do it to their faces as well, all in good humor. “But that’s why we have got to have good guy friends,” he clasped Deacon on the shoulder, “For moments when the go one and forget about us.” 

She had paused to watch Noah stretch, blue hues wandering over the exposed torso. When the older man was still in the process of stretching, she reached out with the icy cold beer and pressed the bottle to his skin. Neslyn turned her attention back to the box of pizza as she grabbed it from the fridge, bumping the door closed with her hip. “I had all the intentions to sharing, that was if you woke up in time before I ate the last few slices,” she mused. 

Noah lurched forward, his arms falling to his side as he hissed with the cold beer. “You’re testing me this mornin’ already, huh?” He growled playfully, taking the beer from her hand, “Couldn’t even bother to wake me up? I’m offended over here, Nes.” The corners of his lips turned upward in a smirk, “Next time I’m settin’ alarm to get up before you do.”

               with nyx tugging at her leash ( surely , to get to whatever scents that were just out of her reach ) , stevie jogs a few steps forward to give her giant of a dog more room to explore , passing noah in the process just by a few steps . “ jesus . she walks me more often than i walk her . ” she jokes,. although it wasn’t anything anyone didn’t notice . stevie stood at a mere five feet & two inches whereas nyx , her all black great dane , was closer to six feet when on two legs . it was a challenge more often than not . one that she was sure was amusing to any onlookers .                a couple more steps & stevie’s stopping in her tracks when she feels the mush of something under her foot . “ oh , no . no . ” she knows exactly what she’s stepped in , especially when the dogs catch the scent that nyx seemingly passed up just a second prior ( or maybe stevie was too busy chatting to notice )   the warning would’ve been nice , she thinks to herself . “ noah ,no ! ” she’s amused , but also entirely grossed out by the smell that hits her following the couple of moments after . her free hand comes up to cover her mouth & stifle a laugh at the same time .  “ shit … literal shit is on my brand new nike’s & ugh , now we can’t grab a bite after this because i am going to smell like shit , noah ! ” stevie whines , scraping the bottom of her shoe against the ground to rid of the animal crap she’d just stepped in , making an unpleasant face as she does . “ i swear to god , if it weren’t for my bad luck , i wouldn’t have any luck at all . ”

Being out with the dogs and Stevie was always a good time for the both of them. It wasn’t often that he found friendship in female companions, at least not after the affair with Sadie James and the way that he was head over heels for Addison McDaniel when she wouldn’t open up to him. While he had briefly dated Stevie, the two quickly realized their friendship was far more important than the two of them figuring out a relationship. “I mean, she’s double your size, if not more,” he teased, watching Stevie step ahead of him with Nyx. “Granted these two are pretty close to weighing what I weigh,” he looked down at the golden girls in front of him, a smile beaming as his eyes lingered on them a moment longer. They were his whole damn world. They’d never betray him and their love for him was unconditional. 

The squishing sound underneath Stevie’s foot had him wrinkling his nose. “Oh, no,” he groaned, his nose still pressed up toward his brows. He can’t help but let out a small laugh as she realizes she has dirtied her brand new shoes. “Stevie,” he elongates her name with a groan, laughter mixing through to push his lips into an amused smile. “Leave it to you to ruin any plans of getting food after this,” Noah teased, “It’s like you want me to starve and wither away out here.” He shook his head, pretending to be hurt by the notion, “I just cannot believe you’d do this to me,” Noah teased in a rather dramatic fashion, know he could do so with Stevie. 

Mira started to crawl out of the little stick fort, groaning as she pulled herself up to her feet. “Man, it’s cramped in there– we should have built it bigger.” It didn’t take long for a little red head to poke his out from the fallen branches, peering passed Mira and over at Noah. Dexter didn’t emerge until he spotted the dogs before crawling out himself. “Why, thank you. We’ve been working hard on it all morning. I’d offer you to join us but… I don’t think there’s room for another and two more dogs,” she teased. “Are you enjoying your hike?” Mira asked.

“You learned for next time,” he told her with a smile, reaching down to pet one of the golden retrievers that came up to nuzzle his hand with her return. “Hiya girl,” he patted her head a few times as Mira’s son emerged from the tavern himself. “That’s quite alright, I don’t want to interrupt anyhow,” he nodded his head at the woman with a smile, “We are, the girls certainly love to run through the woods. Always end up with sticks in their fur,” he shook his head, plucking one from a tail, “it’s a good thing I know a good groomer in town. Saves my ass with these two.”

He had missed doing long distance hiking, Nevada had stayed in Madison this summer to work on composing music which meant he missed going out to spend weeks or a good month on a trail. This is something he would consider doing next year, or maybe, during winter break. He was rolling his eyes now, “Oh, come on, as if,” he mused. “Look at you,” Nev continued to teased, shaking his head. “Hey, whenever you need a little ego boost I’ll be happy to help and swarm you with all the compliments.” The man was groaning now, “Pleeeease, I need it. Oh, I do that as well, always leave my supplies in the back of my truck.”

Noah chuckled, tipping his head back with Nevada’s compliment of sorts. “Now that’s what real friends are for,” he admitted to him with another small laugh. “My sister over here doggin’ on me any minute she gets,” he joked, knowing Bree would have hit him good for that one. He was happy to have a good relationship with his sister. Noah nodded his head, “Never know when you might need them.” He grinned at Nevada, “We just got to pick a weekend and get on out of Madison for a a day or two,” it would make all the difference, at least for him. Running in and having to talk to both of his exes in the same week was having him wanted to get the hell out of dodge.

Clearly, Noah was there to shop for plants. That shouldn’t have come as a surprise to Sadie. What did she expect– He’d show up at her work to finally work things out 6 years later? That was a silly thought, and not even something she wanted, but it still hurt. With all the noise in her brain, it took intense focus for Sadie to hear his words. “Got it,” she muttered. “I can help with that.”

There was a safe distance between them. On one hand, it wasn’t enough, and Sadie would prefer if Noah left altogether. On the other hand, she desperately wanted to close that space and hug him. It wasn’t about her attraction to him, but about her guilt. They both went into hiding after the affair, never getting the chance to talk openly about it. She worried that he hated her now. A million sorries were trapped on the tip of her tongue, but she held back. Her silence was probably making him uncomfortable, and making her look pathetic. 

Sadie cleared her throat and turned to a potted spider plant. Her face was flushed with warm pink, voice shaky, but she maintained composure. It was helpful to get her eyes off of him. “Are you talkin’ indoor or outdoor plants? This one can go in the office and it’s practically impossible to kill.”

“Thanks,” Noah muttered back in response, reaching to rub the back of his head once more. He hated how weird things were between them. First, he gets stuck in an elevator with Addison and now he’s stuck buying plants for the clinic office from Sadie. It was fair to say the least. This is exactly what Noah deserved on a much lesser scale. In fact, if he was being honest with himself, he was sure he deserved much more torture than being forced to talk to the two women in his life that he wronged. “Uhm” he paused, looking at the plants a moment longer before bringing his gaze to meet her own. He had missed Sadie. In a way that was unimaginable. He didn’t miss sleeping with her or the affair - while he had enjoyed them at the time - no, he missed her as a friend in his life. “Mostly indoor and so long as it’s not toxic to any cats or dogs, you know? Don’t want to make my patients more sick or sick at all by comin’ into the office.”
