Four video projectors, nine-monitor video wall, five players, and four LED wash lights; artist’s proof Dimensions variable Art Institute of Chicago, Donna and Howard Stone New Media Fund, 2005.93
Delphine, 1992 (Diana Thater: The Sympathetic Imagination)
“FREEDOM IN SPACE
Shot in the Caribbean, Delphine documents a camera crew filming a pod of free dolphins, the humans and animals interacting to create the footage. The installation of this video, with four projectors and a nine-monitor video wall, is tipped up on an angle, cutting through the gallery space. Adjacent to the projections is a vertical video wall that plays an image of the sun shot from a telescope in outer space. Delphine thus addresses three kinds of bodies: the animal, the celestial, and the human.
Dolphins live vertically, horizontally, and in depth. They live in a world without boundaries or borders—in continuous space. Thus, in Delphine, there are three kinds of bodies in space: dolphins moving through volumetric space; the sun spinning in a vacuum of black space; and then the viewer, moving through “real” space made volumetric by the artificial magenta light filling the gallery and framing the projections.”

The most trusted voice in music.
In 1977, electronic composer Laurie Spiegel's "Kepler's Harmony of the Worlds" traveled to the edge of the solar system as part of Voyager 1 and 2's "Golden Record". This reissue of her 1980 LP shows how Spiegel always contemplated orbits, heavenly bodies, and the cosmos through her compositions, while remaining affectionately human.

THOUGHT-FORMS
ANNIE BESANT AND C.W. LEADBEATER
FIG. 43. INTELLECTUAL ASPIRATION
“Surely the study of these thought-forms should be a most impressive object-lesson, since from it we may see both what to avoid and what to cultivate, and may learn by degrees to appreciate how tremendous is our responsibility for the exercise of this mighty power. Indeed it is terribly true, as we said in the beginning, that thoughts are things, and puissant things; and it behooves us to remember that every one of us is generating them unceasingly night and day. See how great is the happiness this knowledge brings to us, and how gloriously we can utilize it when we know of some one in sorrow or in suffering. Often circumstances arise which prevent us from giving physical help either by word or deed, however much we may desire to do so; but there is no case in which help by thought may not be given, and no case in which it can fail to produce a definite result. It may often happen that at the moment our friend may be too entirely occupied with his own suffering, or perhaps too much excited, to receive and accept any suggestion from without, but presently a time comes when our thought-form can penetrate and discharge itself, and then assuredly our sympathy will produce its due result. It is indeed true that the responsibility of using such a power is great, yet we should not shrink from our duty on that account. It is sadly true that there are many men who are unconsciously using their thought-power chiefly for evil, yet this only makes it all the more necessary that those of us who are beginning to understand life a little should use it consciously, and use it for good. We have at our command a never-failing criterion; we can never misuse this mighty power of thought if we employ it always in unison with the great divine scheme of evolution, and for the uplifting of our fellow-man.”

Reality is the measure of human thinking. It is the means by which we orient ourselves in the Universe. The actuality of time ―the reality of this century― determines what we can grasp and what we cannot yet understand. And this reality of our century is technology: the invention, construction, and maintenance of machines. To be a user of machines is to be of the spirit of this century. It has replaced the transcendental spiritualism of past eras. Everyone is equal before the machine. I can use it, so can you. It can crush me; the same can happen to you. There is no tradition in technology, no class-consciousness. Everybody can be the machine’s master, or its slave.
