Nobody knew exactly why the Phantom Busters kept ending up in terrible condition.
But on second thought...that wasn't true.
The problem was that nobody ever got a straight answer as one day they were fine. The next day Mogari had a bandage on his forehead that looked way too huge for their liking , Tamon was limping slightly , and Eugene looked like he'd just crawled out of a swamp whilst Kanzaki's usually clean skin was covered in both sweat and dirt.
Whenever anyone asked , the answers were always suspicious. "We fell." Mogari said in their defense , "Down what?" The other student onlh became more confused. How could a fall be that bad to the point Eugene looked like he'd just crawled out of a swamp ?
Kanzaki immediately interjected with a dry tone , "A hill." He explained.
And the student tilted their head in disbelief , actually seemingly pretty disappointed of how stupid their answers were , "A single hill did all that?"
"...A very aggressive hill." And Mogari shrugged. Nobody believed them⸺except maybe the teachers..
You , however , had long since stopped asking questions. As an upperclassman , you'd learned two things about the Phantom Busters.
Two: the less you knew, the longer you would live.
So when you found them stumbling into school one morning looking like survivors of a natural disaster , you simply sighed. "What happened this time ?" Tamon shrieked at the way you were eyeing both the group and at him especially for his injury was by far the worst so far.
"N—n—nothing !!!..." He stumbled over his own words , struggling to keep eye contact with you.
"Tamon." You called out his name , making him scream louder , "There are leaves in yer hair." And right when he was about to leave the school entirely , the green-haired teen calmed down after realizing that was all you had to say.
"It's nature. We were being kind to the enviroment." Kanzaki mumbled , stuffing his hands into the pockets of his pants.
"'Zat so ?" You scoffed , your eyes narrowing into a piercing glare. "Then explain the darn frog in Eugene's pockets." The orange-haired boy jumped slightly at the mention of a frog⸺his gaze slowly averting to his pockets , and nearly fainted when he had spotted the old and slimy amphibian.
Tamon , Mogari , and Kanzaki all turned to Eugene , and Kanzaki had to cover his mouth to stiffle a surprised yell.
"Oka..Okay...Maybe something did happen." Kanzaki lowered his hand from his mouth , while his gaze flickered from you and Mogari who was poking at the frog in Eugene's pants happily.
The first aid kit at the school clinic might as well belonged to you at this point.
Even the nurse didn't seem shocked anymore.
"Oh , them again ?" She remarked , her dry and monotonous voice nearly made you laugh. "Yeah , them again." Eugene and Tamon both felt equally as humiliated as each other⸺well aware that their group came here nearly everyday.
"Welp , good luck to you , kid." She spun her chair around , knowing that you were better at patching the Phantom busters up than she was.
"Thank you." Your voice rang at her , before you herded the group to empty chairs.
Immediately , they started protesting.
"We're fine !!—" Mogari whined , trying to run away from you. But Eugene , thankfully making your life easier , pulled him back down by the hem of Mogari's shirt. "Sit." Eugene's off-putting stare sent Mogari flying into his seat.
"Reader ! We're fine..We can handle—" Tamon stuttered , "No." You immediately denied his attempt at negotiating. The green-haired teenager wisely shut up.
Turning back to your current patient , you dabbed disinfectant at Kanzaki's wound⸺the look on his face expressed extreme discomfort , but begrudgingly still listened to you.
Meanwhile , Eugene had somehow aqquired thrree different bruises and a cut on his cheek. "Eugene..." You whispered his name weakly , and he straightened his posture on instinct. "...Yes , sir."
"Why are there three different bruises shaped like friggin' footprints on you ?..."
"...I plead the fifth..?" He mumbled. "We're in Japan." You reminded him , and his next words made you feel like you had white hairs growing. "I plead the international fifth...." Eugene averted his body and eyes away from you.
Mogari immediately started cackling from his side.
"Don't think you're safe." The smile faded from his face instantly. Actually , the entire room besides the nurse looked horrified when you pulled out another roll of bandages.
"Wait—!!" Mogari flailed his hands around profusedly , you ignored his pleading and continued to pull them out; "No." You rolled your eyes , "Please !?" He asked again.
Yet his answer remained the same , "No." You said blatantly. "You have a sprained wrist." You pointed his injury out without hesitation , making him freeze...
"I was caught..." He clasped his hands togethers , as if praying for himself. "You were caught from the start of the day." And this time , the black-haired teenager had no retort.
The room grew quiter afterwards , the silence wasn't awkward...Just heavy. The kind of silence that only appeared whenever someone was far more exhausted than they'd like to admit.
Not just physically , but something deeper⸺something that most people would brush off and say "It's the Phantom Busters. They always get back up even after everything." It was something that sat behind endless jokes and ridiculous stories.
You knew they carried more than their age group has ever...You witnessed them exorcising a ghost in the past⸺nothing fancy.
Just a small realization when you passed by and hid in a corner when things were flying around randomly.
The words surprised even him with the way they came out so suddenly.
"Patching us up , you know ?" He added in , and Mogari nodded in agreement. "Yeah !— We're takin' up all your sweet time by making you patch us up everyday."
He then silenced himself , feeling as if he became too loud again.
"Even if you complain while doing it..." Eugene finished.
Your eyes softened momentarily while you shook your head , "Just try not to get yerselves killed." The four exchanged glances , far too quickly like gears turned in their heads in synchronization.
"What was that look ?" You batted an eye at them suspiciously , "Hah ?...There was n—no look.." Tamon coughed awkwardly , "There definitely was one." You called them out repeatedly , one comment after another , "I...I don't know what're you're talking about..!!" The green-haired boy felt like he was being interrogated.
A long pause came in between you and the four. Then you sighed , "It's whatever." Because honestly ? You stopped expecting straight and honest answers from them months before today.
The Phantom busters smiled in clear relief. Which notably made you more suspicious.
As the four all collectively left the nurses office , Eugene glanced back. "Thank you for today , Reader." He bowed his head respectfully , and the formality broke when Mogari simply waved an excited; "See you tomorrow !!"
You blinked. "Why would I see you tomorrow ?"
The entire group paused , and Eugene and Kanzaki both side-eyed the black-haired boy's stupidity. A terrible sign. An awful sign. The worst sign imagineable.
"What the hell are you idiots planning !?!?—" You barked in horror , "Nothing ! We swear..." Tamon waved his hands embarrassedly.
"...Just please expect a visit from us tomorrow.." Tamon meekly whispered.
