The train hummed steadily beneath its passengers , swaying gently as it rolled past rows of apartment buildings washed in the amber light of late afternoon.
It wasn't rush hour anymore , but there were still enough people that conversations stayed low and everyone seemed wrapped up in their own little world.
Saku sat by the window.
And Reader sat beside him.
Neither of them had spoken much since boarding⸺not because it was awkward , but it was quite the opposite.
Silence had always been easy between them. Reader fished around in their hoodie's pocket before pulling out a tangled pair of wired earphones. "...Want one?" He asked the black-haired male.
Saku looked up from his bag resting on his lap. "What're you listening to?" He mumbled the question out. "Wave to Earth." You answered , and he wasted no time replying , "...Sure." Saku shrugged his shoulders.
Reader untangled the wire with practiced ease before handing one earbud over. As the music started , soft guitar drifted into the quiet space between them.
Neither of them said anything⸺there wasn't really anything to say. The melody filled the silence for them.
And outside the window , the telephone poles blurred into streaks of white from the clouds and the blue of the sky. Reader leaned back in their seat , his eyes half-lidded in solace. They always looked relaxed , as if the world could spin a little faster without bothering them.
Saku found himself stealing a glance.
"He's cute when he's quiet , huh ?" That's probably what Saku was thinking.
Reader wasn't looking at their phone , nor was he looking out the window. They were simply listening.
Really listening.
And every now and then , their fingers tapped lightly against their thigh in time with the drums. "...You like them a lot ," Saku murmured , taking a mental note of how fond you were of Wave to Earth. "Mhm." The other hummed in response , "They're calming." Reader nodded once.
"They feel like rainy late-night conversations , you know what I mean ?" Saku blinked at your description of them. "...Thas.....oddly specific."
Reader shrugged. "I think music tastes like places." You added , making Saku raise an eyebrow at the phrase. "Tastes ?" He repeated , "Mhm. This one's sitting by an open window while it's raining." Reader tilted his head off to the side in thought.
"Ya describe things weirdly." The dark-eyed student commented blatanly , but Reader had the perfect retort to everything ; "You still understood."
Reader's answer caught the boy off-guard. "I....did..I guess." Reader smiled without opening their eyes. "'You guess' ?...You're gonna have to give me a better answer than that."
The train came to a halt , and passengers swiftly got off as the song changed⸺another gentle guitar riff flowed into soft vocals before train rocked slightly as it rounded a curve once more.
Without intention , Reader's shoulder bumped against Saku's. "Sorry." Saku apologized before Reader could get the chance , "I'm the one who bumped into you.." Reader chuckled a bit , but neither of them moved away.
The contact stayed.
It wasn't heavy.
Just enough that whenever the train swayed , their shoulders brushed together again. Then for some reason , Saku seemingly didn't mind ; actually...He found it comforting.
Reader absentmindedly adjusted the wire so it wouldn't tug between them. "...These things always get caught." Reader criticed , "They do." Saku nodded in agreement.
"Wired earphones are annoying." Reader sighed.
"But you still use them..?" He seemed a bit confused , Saku did.
Yet Reader had no retort for that one...For once in your life. "They're sentimental." The h/c-haired boy huffed.
Saku looked over. "Sentimental ?...That sounds idiotic." Reader opened one eye at that , "They don't run out of battery." Saku stared for a second 'till he crossed his arms in exhaustion at your answers. "I should've known." Reader grinned. "You expected something profound ?"
"...Maybe." Saku's brow twitched ,, an indirect saying ; "I was caught." Reader laughed gently again , "I was just kidding , don't look so mad."
The song continued.
For a while , they simply watched the scenery pass⸺children walking home at every stop , cyclists racing alongside the tracks , a small park where dogs chased tennis balls down the window. Life was moving quietly outside the glass.
As halfway through the next song , Reader yawned. "You tired ?" Saku asked , raising an eyebrow. "A little." You leaned back into your seat , slouching lazily with a hand in your pocket ,, "You stayed up late again ? How stupid are you ?" The dark-eyed student scolded Reader softly. "...Maybe." Saku gave him a look.
Reader looked away , surrendering to Saku's glare. "Yes." Saku didn't say anything more but an ; "I figured."
Another comfortable silence settled over them. Reader's eyelids slowly became heavier ; the music was soft , the train was warm , the rhythmic clacking of the tracks made everything feel just a little sleepier.
Saku noticed Reader's head beginning to dip.
Then lift.
Then dip again.
"R—Reader." Saku stuttered out to Reader , "Hm?" Reader acknowledged his words tiredly. "You'll hurt your neck.." He says. "I'll survive." The e/c-eyed boy retorted.
"You won't." Saku bantered , listening to Reader mumbled something unintelligible.
A few seconds later⸺Reader's head gently came to rest against Saku's shoulder. "..." Reader had fallen asleep and Saku froze for exactly three seconds. Then he immediately started to panic , not knowing what to do as the black-haired student carefully shifted just enough so they wouldn't slide off whenever the train slowed.
The earphone wire stretched awkwardly between them now. He let out a long sigh to himself. "...Good thing these are wired." Saku propped himself up properly.
Reader let out a quiet , sleepy hum , completely unaware.
It was until Saku started to drift to sleep too , not noticing until now that he , himself⸺lacked sleep as well. "Dang it...I gotta..stay....awake.." He whispered softly , seemingly incapable of keeping his head up.
And slowly but surely , Saku himself , had fallen asleep. His head rested on Reader's head , but slipped toward Reader's chest in sleepiness.
Moments later , the train came to a hard stop , and the two shot up in shock. The screeching of the tracks startling the both of them , causing Saku to nearly jump out of his seat.
Regardless , Saku calmed down a bit when he noticed Reader was fine. "Oh shit !— This is my stop...!!" Reader exclaimed , hurrying to get his bag that was flopped down on the floor beside his feet. "Uh— you're goin' already ?" Saku watched Reader get up in a rush , "Yeah ! Sorry !!—"
Reader fumbled off the train , waving goodbye to his "friend" as he left. "See ya tomorrow , Natsusawa !!"
And for some reason , Saku was a lot more disappointed to see the other leave than he's ever been before. "Yeah....See you."
Though , there was this feeling in the pit of his stomach that wished he asked Reader to stay just until the next stop...Maybe next time....?..
