Currently reading “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy and when she talks about how moms are romanticized I was brought back to a critique I was a part of. The writers story was about how mothers can fail their children and one of the other people in the critique felt it was wrong to not think of the mothers’ point of view, especially since mothers are judged enough as is.
I remember thinking that that person probably had a healed relationship with their mother. That their mother was probably someone who loved and cared for them in a way a parent should. How lucky and blessed they were.
I think it’s much more nuanced than just saying moms shouldn’t be romanticized or moms should be given more grace. I think acknowledging both that moms are people who have their own journeys and lives who are also responsible for making sure their children grow up knowing love and care is important.
This book has been such a good read; there’s not enough words to describe the emotions and thoughts it’s pulled me through.
