One of the guys I worked with told us a story about how, when they were doing archaeology surveys in the woods they ran into a bigfoot hunter. Bigfoot guy asked if they had seen signs of bigfoot, and he was like "Sorry, nothing like that. We're archaeologists, so we're looking for human stuff." and the bigfoot guy was like "Oh! I saw some Native American cairns on my way out here. I can give you a general location." and when he was like "Yeah dude, that'd be sick. We're actually looking to document those." the bigfoot guy was like "Yeah, they looked pretty cool. I didn't touch them though, because Native Americans built them, not bigfoot."

I do get why the historical warrior class, especially in the Middle Ages, is literally just typified as THE Warrior Class who's sole and entire remit is just violence on behalf of themselves or those above them. But like with so many things it massively ignores the nuances that the actual fact of the historical warrior class had, especially in the Middle Ages.

I was going to do a whole thing, but there's a reason why the word 'knight' comes from the German 'knecht'. They're servants; to their king, to their lords, to God, and also in a very oblique way, to the people underneath them too.

My “senior paper” was on the comitatus and how that particular social structure influenced the medieval period … and yeah, there’s an awful lot of overlap and interplay between “the estates” …

Which is something I get people do want to not delve into too much for the sake of a story (because despite how Tumblr likes to pretend it would be, a story that is literally just arguments between Lord A and Lord B about crop rotation and shared land along with taxation between themselves, the king and the church, along with dealing with the minutia of daily life in the Middle Ages would get quite boring), it's something that misses a fundamental thing for the later evolution of the warrior class, and that was that they went from solely being the warrior class to also being the ruling class too.

@frasohei YOUR SENIOR PAPER WAS ON THE COMITATUS? AWwWWW we really are quite similar in our interests (well ok, my Non-Ecclesiastical interests at least) Also like. To add to the 'knight' thing. Knight comes from the OE word 'cniht' which means young man, youth, and does also have connotations of servitude. The old english word that really shows this concept though is þegn (thane), which literally means 'servant' but is also the term for the retinuemen dedicated to the service of the lord. The overlap is so much that sometimes in my OE courses when we translate I have to tell the students that actually it's not clear if a character is a retinueman or a random servant.

It was, and I presented it at The Intermountain History Conference, and one of the panelists was very fond of Markland’s “The Craven Comitatus” … I told him I didn’t find it convincing because of the reasons I mentioned in my text… which went over about as well as one would expect…
