It's sad because it shows the power that homophobes still have. We saw the review bombing happening. We saw Elon Musk using the platform he bought so he'd be able to influence public discourse, bashing the entire storyline as getting in the way of "basic sci-fi." It's sad that he ended up being right about the Duffers' intentions, but that doesn't change the fact that he's an asshole for having a problem with the most bare minimum of LGBT representation. His comments reflected a shockingly large portion of the audience.

i will literally die on the hill of will byers being an emo kid if he was born in like the late 90s or early 2000s…maybe not in terms of visual aesthetics (though the idea of trapper hat will amuses me) but between his queerness and his affinity for the macabre i do think he would find himself in emo subculture spaces…not to say emo spaces were totally gay-friendly because they certainly weren’t but there was more of an openness even if a lot of it was just straight emo boys kissing each other….dan and phil have discussed this as well…
