but i understand there is a new ship in town

So when I was little my mom had an old cell phone, and I mean this is like 1997 so I’m dead serious when I say it’s an old cell phone I mean it looked like this

My mom let me play with it because it didn’t work anymore but apparently even in super old phones there was the safety feature that 911 would still work even if the phone wasn’t connected to any network.

Little like 6 year old me is playing around dialing numbers and pretending to be a grown up and making very important pretend business calls and I dunno why I did it but I dialed 911 and it connected and I hear the operator answer and ask me what my emergency is. and I IMMEDIAtELY PAnIC AND HANG UP and like start crying so hard because i think the police are going to come and arrest me because my mom had it drilled into my tiny head that you only call 911 if there’s a very serious emergency and I had just smashed that rule into a million pieces

And my mom comes into the kitchen and sees me screaming, snot running down my face, crying that I didn’t mean to do it and to please don’t let the police take me to jail and that I was sorry. so my mom asks me what I did and between my gurgles and sobbing she finally figures out what happened and I think she ended up calling the non-emergency number for the police to let them know that the call was a mistake, but I honestly don’t remember because my memory of this incident is mostly just the complete and utter terror at the thought of going to child prison. 

So she tells me it’s okay and to just never do it again but at this point little 6 year old me is long past the point of no return and I am completely inconsolable so my mom asks me if I wanted to call our family friend Ed who was a Chicago police detective and so I could explain to him what happened. And to little me that made perfect sense because I knew Ed and if he said he wouldn’t arrest me then everything would be okay even though realistically Ed would have had NO say whatsoever in whatever judicial process I would have to go through for my crimes…but anyways…

Now I can’t even imagine my mom having to call this guy on the phone…it’s dinner time and my mom’s having to explain to our friend that I had accidentally dialed 911 on her old phone and I was afraid of being arrested “so could you please tell this crying 6 year old that you promise not to let her go to jail because she will literally not stop screaming and panicking”
