Night Vale Theorists

In episode 67-[Best Of?], younger intern Cecil commented on his trip from Europe that he just came back from. He says, “On my trip I met a very smart and very handsome scientist. His name is Guiamo Marconi (guessed on the spelling here). He showed me all sorts of things. All sorts of things! All sorts. But he also showed me a new device he’s working on called, get this, radio. As unlikely as it seems, Marconi thinks that soon, shows just like this will be carried by invisible waves right to your ears…” He goes on about radio. (Funny thing is, Gugliemo Marconi, a real person, invented the telegraph in 1895.) Later in the episode, young Cecil says, “I will never meet ‘that someone’.‘That someone’ that could have given my life depth and meaning. Who could have been my 'other’. I will only ever sit here…” I think that Cecil created Carlos to be his “other” in his head and modeled him after the scientist he met in Europe. Also, when Carlos first arrived, he didn’t get the usual “Interloper!” fiasco that all outsiders go through. Plus, when Carlos was attacked by the little people below the bowling alley, he was reported to being seriously hurt. Though, when the doctor examined him, he was completely fine, even though the Apache Tracker ended up getting killed. Perhaps Carlos’s phrase, “A scientist is always fine,” is made to explain this. Maybe Carlos is never able to explain the science he’s doing because Cecil doesn’t know any science. Going even further, I think that Cecil didn’t even realize he did this, as he seems emotionally repressed on several occasions, thus the reason why the two didn’t begin dating the moment Carlos appeared. 

Things that go against this theory: Carlos’s team of scientists (though, they could be imagined along with Carlos.) 'What It Is’, Carlos’s old university that he came from. Also, Carlos hasn’t discovered his own nonexistence, and has been able to do actual science and seems to know things Cecil does not. Maybe scientists are just Cecil’s type.

Sorry for writing so much, and this is a bit of a far-fetched theory, but please add to it if you want. 

What if they’re actually brothers? They’re both the same age like fraternal twins. Somehow got separated and ended up in a different town each. They both like radio and Carlos.

Tamika Flynn is obviously a slayer. Giles becomes her watcher and starts training her, until she finds out he’s a librarian and kills him.

This was one of my first ideas about Night Vale. I thought is was a strange post apocalyptic town. I’m not sure how well this theory is going to go for me after the last episode, but still a possibility.

I’m down with the Nuc theory. In my head this is something like The Hills Have Eyes. The government choose this town to test on in the 80s around the same time their sister city was nuked. They’ve all lost a good portion of their memories as an after affect of the experiment. Maybe the government has tried to convince the town that the hills/mountains are real so the citizens won’t leave the valley they’re located in. Maybe the “Dog Park” is a way out into more desert and in an effort to keep people in, they have labeled it as “Off limits”. Maybe their rival city Desert Bluff is undergoing some other type of controlled experiment that would explain how they act. Maybe the street cleaners are government workers in radiation protection outfits. Maybe Carlos is actually a scientist involved in the initial experiments but when he gets to town to do his job, he becomes affected by the radiation/chemical/whatever.

So, I have an interesting theory that I’ve been thinking about. Recently, I watched a video about the testing of nuclear weapons in the U.S. during the 1950’s. This got me thinking, what if Nightvale is one of the towns affected by nuclear fallout? I have analyzed the first three episodes of the podcast: Pilot, Glow Cloud, and Station Management. Most of my evidence has come from the first two episodes. For example, Cecil makes a reference to Radon Valley, where the view is LITERALLY breathtaking. Well, radon is actually a radioactive gaseous element that is formed by the disintegration of radium. I did some research, and radium is one of the elements given off by a nuclear explosion. Also in the episode Glow Cloud, Cecil mentions the bake sale put on at Nightvale Elementary School. It was said that “proceeds will go to support neutron bomb development.” If that doesn’t give it away then I don’t know what does.

If something like this were to happen in Night Vale, how do you think the citizens would react? What would the people of Night Vale have done?
