He fears confinement. He hates being cornered or trapped.

He also does not like to be ganged up on because he wouldn't be able to escape - which is all back to that confinement fear.

Not to compare his quirk to Shinsou’s by any means -- but they are somewhat similar in the fact that they both deal with a form of mind control.

I want to explain to you in greater detail just how his quirk works, because a lot of people have had some questions/concerns.

When you’re about to fall into a dream,  you mentally don’t just go from YOUR BED to SUDDENLY ACTION IN A DREAM, right? When you start a dream, you’re typically in the middle of it somewhere and you feel like you’ve been in it for hours already. It’s not a jarring and sudden thing that happens.

When Atsuji takes over your mind, it’s the very same as that. THAT is why its so HARD to break out of his quirk. It’s not OH SUDDENLY IM ON THE BATTLE FIELD AND NOW IM IN HELL??? No. You show up in the middle of hell, but with that feeling that you’ve been there a while. So it’s not like you IMMEDIATELY realize you’re in a dream??

That would be too easy. You’d be able to knock yourself right out of his control immediately. 

No, it would take someone with a vERY STRONG WILL and a sharp mind to put pieces together. This isn’t right. Something isn’t right. This isn’t real.

The moment your mind says ‘this isn’t real’ is the moment you pop out of his nightmare. The moment you stop believing that what you’re experiencing is real, it’s done. Over. You have officially kicked him out of your mind.

But again, it’s not something that, in any typical scenario, would be a conclusion drawn right off the bat. So I just,,,, won’t appreciate it very much if he immediately takes someone into a nightmare and they pop out of it within seconds. That’s not the nature of his quirk and how it works.

It is very similar to Shinsou’s in that it is all-overpowering. The only difference is that you can SOMEWHAT rationalize in Shinsou’s quirk - you can recognize that you can’t stop your body from doing what its doing.

With Atsuji, it’s not like that at all. You’re suddenly in this horrific world he’s built for you, with the familiar feeling that you’ve been there for hours - and it’s going to be hard to break free from.

But not impossible. 

“Shh, little one.” 

Atsuji had done enough research on this victim to know he was a fighter, and likely wouldn’t take kind to being called ‘little.’ 

Which made this all the more fun, in his eyes. He sure did love to rile his victims up before tossing them into horrors beyond their wildest imagination.

His fingers tapped against Bakugou’s temples, gaining access into the boy’s mind, and laughed softly in his ear.

The moment his hands make contact with Eraserhead’s temples, Atsuji feels nothing short of pure elation flood his veins. He slides in close, mouth pressed to the shell of the pro-hero’s ear as he whispers, “Gotcha.”
