Yupo painting sketch of a photo of a field in my hometown that I took several winters ago. Painting was done on a recent Youtube livestream (here, at the 1 hr 26 min mark). Not too sure what I think of Yupo paper yet, but it does encourage me to be more loose and not-precious with my warmup sketches.

Today's livestream. Working out the kinks in a new studio set up. I finally have a dedicated art space again! I also tried working with Yupo paper for the first time. Definite a love-hate material, but it has possibilities!

I recommend skipping to the 24 minute mark - that is when the more interesting paintings start.

Ryugan-ji Temple Tree, photo, no dimensions, 2024

Taking a break from art-making for a few days. Here's a photo from my trip to Tokyo last April. It was my first time in the city. I'd wanted to go to Japan since I was 10, and I finally made it at 32. It was only a three-day layover on the way back to the USA, but I had a grand time!

I had a day to myself that I spent walking continuously. Racked up 11 miles, visiting five temples (three shinto, two Buddhist). I tried to visit as many Shinto shrines as I could since I had never been in one before that day. I don't read Japanese, so I had a hard time telling the temple types from the outside. There were a couple of times where I'd walk in, see the Buddhas lined up near the door, and think "aw, we have this at home!" Still, every temple I went to was lovely, and Ryugan-ji Temple ended up being my favorite of the bunch.
