Viral Interventions: Final Proposal
Final Presentation Summary:
In response to ongoing issues surrounding immigration and citizenship, our art project seeks to reclaim space and visibility for the Latino community in Miami through the powerful phrase: “A united generation born of immigration.” This phrase is meant to show pride in our roots and bring people together, especially during times when immigrants are being targeted. Miami is not only a hub for Latin American cultures but also a global capital of modern street art. In neighborhoods like Kendall, local artists such as Zeflorist have used public surfaces and USPS stickers to spread vibrant, meaningful imagery. Inspired by this practice, our group will adopt sticker slapping as our method of expression, choosing the USPS label as both a literal and symbolic canvas. The postal sticker, already deeply tied to ideas of movement, delivery, and identity, becomes a metaphor for migration and the spread of our message. We will handwrite or design the phrase onto USPS stickers and place them across various public surfaces around Miami on signs, poles, benches, and mailboxes making our message visible and accessible to everyday people in their own neighborhoods. To further share our message, we will create both an Instagram page and a website to showcase the photos we’ve taken, offering a visual representation of our theme.
Sticker slapping is democratic, low-cost, and widely used in street art. It allows for rapid and widespread dissemination of ideas, and its accessibility ensures that voices often silenced in mainstream spaces can still be seen and heard.
We will photograph and video-record each sticker’s placement to document how our message moves through Miami. These images will be edited into a dynamic GIF/video compilation that captures the repetition, spread, and accessibility of this medium. The final compilation will act both as an art piece and a digital archive of community visibility.
Final Presentation Will Include:
• A brief artist statement explaining the message and medium
• Photos and video clips of the stickers in different Miami locations
• A compiled GIF/video montage showing the spread and ease of sticker slapping
• An instagram and website
• Reflections on public reaction (if applicable) and the symbolism behind sticker placement
Our project brings attention to the resilience and unity of the Latino immigrant community. By placing the message directly in public view, we bypass traditional gallery spaces and ensure the art speaks directly to the people it represents. This project is about reclaiming space, identity, and pride one sticker at a time.
