He shouldâve known that it was all an act, that Mephistoâs concern was little more than a means to mess with him, draw out his insecurities, drive the blade even deeper into his wounds. Given half the chance, heâs sure heâd delight in a literal one, putting an end to their centuries-long feud, but even that wouldnât faze him, for, when youâve seen what heâs seen, done what heâs done, physical pain cannot compare to the anguish and self-loathing of an ex-Rider.
And, yet, he finds himself reluctant to write the demon off just yet. Heâs been something of a constant in Danâs life, having turned Noble into the original Rider, bonded Johnny to Zarathos, helped prevent the rise of Dormammu. A self-serving bastard he may well be, and theyâve more than had their fair share of confrontations, but heâd be lying if he said that he wasnât, at least, assured by a familiar face in his time of need.
Besides, looking back, Mephistoâs words may not be asâŚgloating as he originally thought. Could it be that, through their mutual disdain for the creator, they share a common enemy, anâŚappreciation for the otherâs grievances? Itâd certainly seem that way, for Dan finds himself nodding along to Mephistoâs words, simply grateful that someone, anyone gets his point of view.
Johnny sure didnât.
â I canât go back. â Though he fails to stray from the anguished monotone, itâs, perhaps, the most certain heâs been throughout the talk. â Johnny, heâŚÂ â A hand claws at the back of his neck, gaze lowered to the ground. â I killed âem, Mephâ. The Riders. I thoughtâŚI thought I was helping âem, yâknow? This angel guy, he said they were killinâ the hosts, so IâŚtook âem, their power. Got used to it, takinâ âem out. Didnât care why, or who, justâŚtheir power. More, and more, and moreâŚFelt fuckinâ great. Best high of my lifeâŚÂ â A stiff wringing of the wrist, now. â But, Johnny ainât ever gonna get over that, got nothinâ to go back to. âÂ
Thatâs when his gaze rises once more to meet Mephistoâs, knowing, deep down, he ainât getting out of here unscathed. His fate is sealed. And, with nothing left to lose, knowing what he knows, why shouldnât he hear the demon out? Heâs the only friend left.
â We both wouldnât be here if I wasnât gonna hear you out. Whatever youâre cookinâ, whatever I gotta doâŚâ An accepting sigh. â Iâm in. â Â
âOh, youâre going to enjoy this,â he muses out lowly. âYou wanât power, donât you? You want... everything back. Well, maybe not everything - for everyone youâve killed... theyâll never forgive you. Even now; right or wrong? It doesnât matter. Not truly - try as you might youâll never get it back. Youâll never become a rider again, but....I have something more. Something better in mind for you. Something I believe youâll enjoy.â
Maybe - maybe not. He wasnât sure, but Meph was going to ensure this deal was taken - his shock was clear by the words of âiâm inâ and that was when the real fun would start. Danny Ketch had willingly wanted the power? Oh, that would be amusing indeed. Perhaps... perhaps he had underestimated him.
âYou see, iâm cooking something amusing - amazing even. Itâs time you learn about it all. You learn about.... everything. My realm is vast and trust me when I say youâll be staying here for quite sometime.â That was, if everything went properly - to mold the other would take time and that meant doing what was necessary.... no matter the cost.
"I have so many you need to meet! Some you know and others you donât - I think a party is in order! Just like old times, remember? You, me - back when things were great before they went down hill. I may not have riders right now, but.... I think youâll be my greatest creation yet. Youâll get all that power and none of those... defects. âÂ
@nickscratchâ
Dormammuâs attempted rise to power had transpired just short of seven weeks ago - to the hour, in fact - yet, the fallout of his grand plan was still being felt across the realms. Ripple effects, energy spikes, tears in the fabric of reality leading to god-knows-where. The sort of madness youâd expect the denizens of Hell to thrive upon, but letâs just say thereâsâŚmethod to their madness - controlled chaos, if you will, like in the good old days - and, theyâre very particular about their endtimes.Â
So, when an outsider came along with talk of death and destruction, on a multiversal scale, it was all they could do to oppose him; not to mention, said plan involved gaining control of the Netherrealms, Mephistoâs included, which may or may not have been the straw to break the camelâs back. Demons are, above all, a territorial lot, which is why Daimonâs not at all surprised to receive a post-battle summons.
What does pique his interest is the choice of location, and the means through which theyâve crossed paths. A quaint little cafe in Las Vegas, out in the open, dawn breaking on the horizon. Mephisto always was moreâŚsophisticated than most - evidenced by the letter drawing him there - but the fact theyâre both so exposed, given all thatâs transpired, to have coffee among humans, Daimon canât help but question the nature of the meeting.
â I donât suppose this has anything to do with the latest âend of daysâ? â A dexterous hand reaches out for the coffee on offer, figuring he ought to, at least, maintain a degree of civility. They were, after all, allied in the fight against his grandfather, and responsible for his eventual demise; however temporary. â Always said Iâd draw the line at my third, but theyâre as incessant as Coachella. â Seen one, youâve seen them all.
His expression, however, soon changes, adopting a more cynical air, knowing, even were it to laud their victory, Mephisto simply doesnât do social calls. â Your part in thwarting Dormammuâs appreciated, and you were duly compensated, but I get the feeling youâre not here for the company. â
âThe end of days are always upon us,â he mused out lowly. âSometimes they appear so often that it gets tiresome.â That much was clear - he already was trying to repair his own realm from damage, but that wasnât exactly the point. No, this was simply a social call.... nothing too huge. Nothing too important.
âI bet another will come in a few months - I might even be directly involved in it,â he said shrugging. âEveryone will move on in time. Just like this one will be forgotten - i give it a few weeks. Maybe less for the people of this planet, but that is what happens with humans. At least business has been up. I think there was six deals alone today?âÂ
Meph smirked. âYouâd be shocked what you can do by telling them youâll bring someone back... for a price of course.â Even if it wasnât in the way they wanted, but that was besides the point wasnât it.Â
âOh, yes - I need you to track down someone whoâs escaped over to this realm. Someone who.... I could drag in myself, but I donât think itâs necessary for me to act.â That and Meph wasnât going to stay on Earth unless it was necessary and right now? It wasnât - he was only here because he had business to take care of.
âYou remember my Grandson, donât you?â
đ¸ď¸ â How could he not be entranced by the lecture. At least it felt like a lecture. Was it a lesson he was due to learn? Or a concept that the lowly clone could only hope to grasp at. He noted the eye roll, and flashed an apologetic frown in response⌠It wasnât Kaineâs intention to overstay his welcome. He knew he hadnât earned these answers, even if their worth weighed little in the others eyes.Â
âI guess that always sounded too good to be trueâŚâ For it to not matter. Did it matter that he was a clone? Did it matter that he was different, that he felt and hurt and loved in a way completely separate from the person he âonceâ was? That was up to him to decide â which was precisely why he chose not to. â.. and terrifying at the same time.â
âAll good things are too good to be true. Such is the way of things. it doesnât matter how you came to be about but what does is your choices. Take for instance.... deals. Many come to me for them - many more beg for them to be undone. It doesnât matter how it came into place, but they always want something more.â
His lips pressed into a thin-line. âSome for another day and others for a new life or for certain things to be forgotten. In truth? It doesnât matter - you want to know if youâre a real boy and yes... you are.â

Even within his masterâs domain, Brimstoneâs presence has a corrupting effect on his surroundings. Bound not by flesh or bone, but hellfire and the very ground he treads upon, heâs truly an imposing sight. Nearing 7ft, he may well appear humanoid, but, in actuality, heâs nothing but shards of crudely-cut rock, held together by a series of volcanic âveinsâ. Never tiring, never breathing - no organs to speak of, no humanity left. Just Brimstone.
As he lumbers through the Netherrealm, he leaves behind fissures in his wake, lava pooling through the cracks of his thunderous step. It is his purpose, to be a blight upon existence, to corrupt all things. And, to his credit, he allows himself to experience pride as he converges upon Mephistoâs throne, lowering himself to a knee, head bowed.
Then, something truly bizarre occurs, something the mortal would have paled at. With so little as a warning, the demon tears into his shoulder, never caring, never flinching. Just faintly, if you strain, thereâs the sound of distant screaming, pleas for mercy, last minute prayers for forgiveness. They stem from the brimstone in his clawed hand, outstretched to his master.
â The souls you requested, Lord Mephisto. â
This had all been an experiment; on to create the perfect son. To do what was necessary to ensure his survival - perhaps he had been a bit too harsh. Too bold over-all, but did it matter? No, not really.
He did what was necessary. He ensured that his creation breathed and that Ketch had been turned into Brimstone. That he had taken someone ( a warrior for god ) and changed them into his own personal plaything - no, more than that.Â
A son of his own design.
Head titled at the action, grin spreading across red lips, right hand waving as the souls vanished from the otherâs grasp, and into Mephistoâs own.Â
Perfect.
âAs usual.... youâve done well. Far more than.... those others who run around like children. Your... brothers to be specific.â

Even before transforming into this hellish monstrosity, killing off the last vestige of Danny Ketch, heâd noted a distinct lack of feeling within Mephistoâs lair, as though the very air subdued any and all emotions. Fear. Hope. Salvation. Heâd been well and truly numb in Mephistoâs company, indifferent, and seemed to care not for the consequences of his actions, nor his eventual fate.
As it happens, he got it wrong, as mortals are oh so prone to. Now, he gets it, scolding claws becoming one with the ground as he retains the mark of respect. Itâs not that the realm subdues emotion, as he so thought - it simply encourages the darker, more primal notions in all men, perverts and corrupts them to something Mephisto can play on, worth with. Oneâs true self.
And, so, in all his grief, hubris, he got his wish. Unfathomable power. Hellish resolve. To surrender his soul, identity, so that he may, some day, gain vengeance upon God. The old him, the lesser him, wouldâve made some quip or another over how long heâs been kneeling, that itâs a humiliating loss of control, but, for Brimstone, thereâs no greater sense of gratification, purpose. And, on those words, pride.
Thereâs not even so much as a grunt of appreciation, thanks, so literal has he taken the command of silence.
The challenge to mold Ketch into what he wanted had been a taxing one. Not so much the deal, but after the fact. Changing him into what was needed and ensuring that things happened a certain way. Perhaps things were.... not as they seemed - that they were less hectic than he remembered, but Mephisto didnât care.
No, he had what he wanted, and now? He got to play with his âsonâ in whichever way he wished. If that meant forcing him into silence? Just so that the demon could bask in his work? So be it.
âYouâve been doing well,â he said, hands clasping together lightly. âFar better than those other two - whoâve failed me constant times. Couldnât even take on falcon on his own and the other does nothing, but... I have so many plans for you.âÂ
âHowever, we must clean house first,â a hand was waved, indicating the other had permission to speak if they wished to do so, âdonât you agree?â
Again, that name. Like a thousand daggers to the mind. Daniel Ketch had been a weak, foolish mortal who bought into the bullshit spewed from the heavens. Brimstone knew better, vowed to never go back. And, so, where thereâd once been a fanged maw, now remains a blank slate of rock, smoke pouring from the blazed embers of his âeyesâ.
Down upon a knee, head bowed.
Yes, Lord Mephisto. Yes, Father.
Now, that was more like it. Brimstone was his favorite ( so far ), but even then, he needed to put down barriers. He needed to put down certain lines. Silence when requested was one of them - not out of anger. No, simply out of the means he could do so.Â
Perhaps he did make the perfect one.... the perfect heir.Â
One that obeyed him at every command ( oh how he enjoyed this ).
âGood boy.â
That name.Â
â Hey, Iâd like to think Iâd be ranking pretty high, if I was. âÂ
âYou are what I say you are, Danny.
Be a good little son and stop talking.âÂ
â Didnât realise your bar for sons was so low. â
â Youâre one to talk, Danny Ketch.âÂ
â Oof. Even Blackheart? âÂ
â Even Kyâlar.â

 âYouâre all my sons now!â
â Heâs the best in the business, but Blaze would never serve without some persuasion. âÂ
â Fairly put. Blaze, is stubborn. Someone who would tear it all down rather than construct something meaningful. â That was just one way of putting it and not even the best in all reality. â Perhaps... a more formal approach is necessary. â
âNow, that is more like it. Do try to bring him in alive - I canât wait to see our old friend Blaze again.â
I swear the only way for me to write here is though... plotted / talked about things. Even then itâs a 50/50 chance of getting Mephisto to work.

Though he could appreciate just how ominous the transition was, Danny failed to be startled by the sudden change in surroundings. If anything, heâd been anticipating it, for where else do fallen angels go but a one-way journey to Hell? Perhaps, after all thatâs transpired - Zadkiel, the betrayal of Johnny, the blood on his hands - he belongs there.
â Like you care, â comes a dismissive scoff, bunching up a sleeve to wipe off his tears. In times past, he would never have been caught dead letting Mephisto see him so weak, nor would he so readily enter his company, but that was then, and this is now, and times have most certainly changed. Not once had he thought to humour the bastard, nor pay his comments any mind, but, after being royally screwed over by God, well, letâs just say heâs starting to consider alternative views.Â
Thereâs not as much spunk as heâd have previously addressed him with, voice little more than a distant mumble, but, to his credit, Dan draws his gaze up a staircase of bodies, beyond the throne itself, to make contact with Mephisto. Features pale. Posture weak. Eyes wild with aching need.
â Not much to talk about. â Hasnât everyone been screwed over by God? Is he ever truly there when you need him? Eh, maybe heâll humour him, just this once. â Got roped into some angel business. Seemed like a good idea at the time. â Guess not. â Got fucked over at the last minute, kicked outta Heaven by the big man himselfâŚÂ â Stripped of all power. Weakened. Mortal. â âŚThe restâs pretty obviousâŚÂ â
â I thoughtâŚAll those years, IâŚEveryone thinks heâs perfect, yâknow? God. LikeâŚheâs God. â A jaded, watery laugh escapes him, bordering more on a sharp exhale. â But, Iâve met him. Iâve seen what he can do, whatâŚwhat heâs doneâŚand he ainât. He ainât! â All this time, heâd been drinking the kool-aid, believing that crap about how the demons are the source of the worldâs problems, when, in reality, theyâd been opposing a tyrannical nutcase. Even then, at the dawn of it all, they saw the flaws in God, his creations, andâŚheâs starting to get it, too.
â Whatever future I got, I know it ainât gonna be spent at the pearly gates⌠â
âAnd so youâve learned the absolute truth of the cosmos. You thought that theyâd be the source of all answers and then you were kicked out. You... were tossed out like yesterdayâs garbage. Powerless, defenseless, and you caught the attention of someone like yourself. Itâs... almost poetic. You, me - all over again like it was old times.âÂ
It wasnât old times, not even close, but... at least he was being decent (for now), and not bringing up old wounds. If anything, Mephisto wasnât going to push his luck unless it was absolutely needed - even then? It would be done carefully.Â
âYour past... isnât one for much debate - you were one of my best. You were many things, but then again? You decided to... attempt to change the rules. You let yourself get wrapped up in lies - not that I can blame you. You were only human at the time. You only were doing what you felt was right, but now? You know the truth.â
âThe question,â he said, leaning back in his throne, âIs simply if youâre willing to do what is necessary to obtain what it is you desire. You canât go back there and you canât stay on earth too long either. Youâre too weak - if I could see it through your rantings? So could anyone else. It wouldnât be too hard to simply... end you, but I believe we can come to an arrangement of sorts.â
It wouldnât be easy, the thought of what Mephisto was planning was vast, but perhaps - yes, perhaps it would just work. It would be a fair agreement - an equal partnership (well, not so equal) and most importantly it was something that Danny wanted.
âUnless... youâd rather I return you... in worse condition than you are currently.â It wasnât exactly a threat, but rather a promise of sorts. A promise that (for the most part) he would go through with if he believed it was necessary.Â
đ¸  â  that sounds  REALLY SPECIFIC   . . iâm going to guess youâve messed around with that before. all the fun and probably getting the one in question killed in the process. those whoâve lived longer than most  . . need to find better hobbies than just messin with us.   â he frowns ; he knows and doubts itâll happen in his lifetime  â if he even LIVES  that long at this point.Â

â   have you ever   STOPPED  to wonder why iâm always  OPEN  to little negations?   iâm sure youâve have a thought or two about it.  why i,  someone so  HIGH  above the rest would stoop down so low to   AID  someone like you.  â it was a question that mephisto   DOUBTED  would be answered,  but he knew it was one that was   NECESSARY  to be pondered considering the fact of mephistoâs little  SCHEMES over the many years.Â
