Lolita is a very psychological, and one of the most controversial books in the world, with themes of child abuse and CSA, Lolita is known for being a very misunderstood book, with many people reading it and taking it in at surface value.
Backstory:
Prior to the release of Lolita, a young girl named Sally Horner was abducted by Frank La Salle, and held for 21 months (almost 2 years). Frank La Salle often used different aliases like "ย Frank Warner, Frank Patterson, Frank Johnson, e.t.c". The story of her capture began when she was dared by her classmates to steal something from the local Woolworths (not in association with Woolworths Aus). He came up and mentioned he was an FBI agent, and saying how she would be sent to reform school, which happened in March. On June, he told her to tell her mother he was the father of her friend, and would go on a trip together, which they eventually travelled all across the USA. He mentioned to others that she was his "biological daughter", and enrolled her in various Catholic schools. In one school, Sally confided in a friend about the abuse she was going through.
Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov + The 2 movies.
The movies follow the same plot of the book, so i'm not gonna heavily mention the movies that much. However, the story follows Humbert Humbert, a unreliable narrator, who comes to New England in the USA, and moves in with the Haze family, consisting of Charlotte Haze, and Dolores Haze (the "Lolita"). Humbert becomes infatuated with Dolores and forms a "hidden relationship" with her. Dolores's mom finds out about what Humbert is doing, and threatens to tell the police, but sadly she passes from getting hit with a car. Dolores was in summer camp by then, and was unaware of her mother's death. Humbert comes to pick Dolores from camp and they venture off onto their road trip. He enrolls Dolores in school, as well as giving her the worst abuse of her life. Overtime, Dolores gets fed up with Humbert, and meets a new man Quilty, who is a "bedroom filmer" for children. She runs away from Quilty after realizing what he is doing and forcing her to do. She marries a new man called Richard, and is pregnant with his baby. During this time period, Humbert is devastated that his "Nymphet (which he called Dolores). He writes her a letter, giving her money and asking her to come back, and he'll help her with her baby. Humbert finds Quilty and ends up killing him. Humbert gets put in jail and dies of heart failure, and Dolores dies on Christmas Day, giving birth to her baby.
What are the similarities?:
We know that Nabokov based the story of Lolita on the Case of Sally Horner, but here are things that were actually very alike:
- Humbert uses aliases in a way that Frank uses them. Humbert Humbert is a pseudonym, a fake name. He is also referred at the beginning as the "White Widowed Male."
- Humbert and Frank were on the run for a similar time with the abducted girls. Frank being almost 2 years, while Humbert's was approximately 1 year.
- Humbert enrolls Dolores in a private styled school, where she too confides in a friend, the same way that Sally confides in her new friend.
- Frank calls Sally his biological daughter, in the same way Humbert calls Dolores his child.
- (Forgot to mention this), Humbert and Frank both carry a gun, as it's seen in the movie of Lolita.
