You can’t tell me that Nesta stays with Cassian because she actually loves him. She is still stuck in the mindset that she doesn’t deserve love or happiness and believes that overgrown bat is her punishment.

I fear I hate Cassian so much by now that even things his fans cite as positive now annoy me about his character. My dislike of him has grown too strong for me to leave anything he does without criticism.
For example, when he is “in awe how far she had come”. The reason he’s in awe is because she just saved “his High Lord and Lady and their son”. He prioritises her saving Feyre and Rhysand over her surviving the Blood Rite with her friends, which had also just happened. Not only that, but with the way it is framed, he also ignores that Nesta did it to save her own sister. She didn’t care about hierarchy. It almost seems as though part of what Cassian’s in awe of is her finally providing a service to her “betters”. What’s more, she had just also saved his own life - for the second time! – which he doesn’t even mention. It really seems as though he only sees good in her when it comes to things she can do for Rhysand.
Same with the scene about her Made weapons. Yes, he votes to tell her. But his first thought goes to how they can use Nesta to make the Night Court unstoppable, while Azriel is the one to warn that her abilities could put her in danger. No thoughts of that from her own mate. And while he votes for telling her, he still keeps it a secret from her.
The quote where he tells her all those wonderful things about how she can take her own time to heal, keep her sharp edges etc. sounds romantic without context. However, this happens right after the Hike from Hell he forced her on! His words are undermined by his own actions!
I’m probably letting my hate get away with me. I get why some of his words or actions can be taken in a more positive manner and I don’t want to act like I think it incomprehensible people dare to like him. For me though, the way he acts towards Nesta is too off-putting to enjoy those moments. So even when he says or does something nice, I’m side-eyeing him hard.
Like with the Symphonica gift: objectively a nice gift, yet I’m immediately reminded how he used to drag her out of taverns and refused to believe she actually loves music until Elain told him.

I’m reading Ruhn and Lidia’s reconciliation now and I just… don’t like it. I thought Ruhn would have some major character development understanding that Lidia’s role was necessary and that someone will get their hands dirty in a war (not only Lidia, but Hunt is also a good example). I thought he would grow to understand that the woman he fell in love is both The Hind and Daybright and one had to exist to feed the other. But the author just decided to include a random fae in a scene to show that Lidia saved some men warning about The Hammer coming their way, thus saving their lives + lots of sexual tension. Like she’s trying to shape Lidia into something acceptable for Ruhn instead of making him grow the fuck up. Bryce always understood that the shadow of death had to exist and it didn’t change the male behind it. Bryce always saw that Hunt was worthy beyond what he had to do to survive. And people still think that Bryce is the immature one…
Tbh Lidia is just a female Rhys with real validations. I don't forgive her, and Ruhn should've had a better mate. She is super shitty for a long time, and Ruhn was justified. Just because she had a valid reason, unlike Rhys, doesn't mean all should be swept under the rug. She helped torture this man she claims to love. That's not nothing. Then she had the balls to get mad that he shot her in the leg to save her whole family 😆
I agree with you that how Lidia was written, mostly in house of flame and shadows, is very alike Rhysand. I hated the arc with her children because it repeated the pattern “I changed because I had a personal reason”. I was expecting “I changed because over the years I saw the destruction I helped to create on this world and instead of leaving all the damage I made behind I’m going to take responsibility, use my advantageous position to feed information to the resistance and help them as much as I can”. I liked the couple way more on the second book, before SJM messed them up (like she does to most of her couples).

same dynamic in both situations btw. one of you tormented me and the other one made me wait for years hoping that you'd love me enough for it to make a difference and it never did.

I noticed that every time someone criticizes Rhys on his behavior fans shrug it off with "Well yes,he's morally grey"
He's not.
Morally grey characters do not get an entire chapter of monolgue where they can explain(badly) their actions. Morally grey characters do not explain and justify their actions at all. Because their morals do not align with the general public.
Tell me one morally grey character in fiction who got an entire chapter dedicated to explain and justify themselves. Even then his explanation is...lacking, it's justified with "he had to protect Velaris and his family" not the Night Court, his citizens but Velaris. Chapter 54 of acomaf is written to make us feel bad for him and see where he was coming from, but once again his explanation is horrible. (Or at least is it if you can look past his moderately sad background). And both the text and the characters tell us that yes his actions were justified and there's nothing wrong with him, he's not bad.
Morally grey characters are not written like that.
Sjm told us via page that Rhys is not a bad person and that every one if his actions are justified instead of letting us decide. And because of that he's not morally grey.

Reposting because I finally had the time to go over the fic and correct some English mistakes. I'm sure there's still plenty to find, but I'm proud of how this story came out.
Gwyn and Az take the first steps towards affective and sexual intimacy. __________________ # _____________________ His hair was a few centimeters longer, more than an inch, for sure. She observed a black lock folding over his forehead, partially covering the dark eyebrow. He hadn't cut his hair in almost a month he was away. Furtively, Gwyn captured the details of his face, one element at a time, never looking too long, until the full image of Azriel renewed itself in her mind. She didn't allow herself to look down beyond his neck, she didn't need distractions in the middle of training; not when he was finally here with his lethal calm and his knowledge of how to press her a centimeter from the limit, fueling all the competitiveness and obsession that lurked under Gwyn's skin.
I’m so glad that the end of House of Flame and Shadow is actually an end. There’s no need to read anything else from this saga. It started brilliantly on book one and it ended ridiculously on book three. All the stories were rushed, lots of characters had no relevance, the solutions just appeared out of nowhere and the personality of main characters seemed to vanish when convenient. Maybe that’s the best world to describe the third book: convenient.
Still not over how a tv show with a female protagonist became completely about men. Still not over how 4 out of 5 women leading the show are related to the sex industry. It really shows the creator’s opinions…
“Please don’t tell Elain,” he said.
Those are Lucien’s first words to Feyre after she learns he was SA’d… and they’re absolutely heartbreaking.
Instead of focusing on his own pain or seeking comfort, his instinct is to protect someone else. It shows just how little he thinks his own hurt matters. There’s so much shame in that one sentence (misplaced, but deeply rooted) like he thinks his trauma somehow makes him unworthy in Elain’s eyes. He’s been carrying this alone for so long, and even when it finally comes out, his first reaction is fear, not relief. He doesn’t want Elain to see him as broken, or lose whatever fragile hope she might represent to him. She’s become this symbol of something good, something healing… and he’s terrified of ruining that.
This moment completely shifts how we see Lucien. It’s not only a quiet confession… it’s a moment of self-erasure.

Will we ever see a central couple in SJM books that are not mates? The super rare thing that everyone has. Also, will we ever see a mating bond that does not work? It’s mentioned that Rhysand’s mother and father had one, but will we ever read that happening? Can we have some love that it’s built and not only fixed because people are suddenly mates?
