In December of this year, my country passed a law banning “LGBT propaganda,” effectively placing a huge number of people outside the law. The wording of this law is just as vague as that of the similar law adopted in Russia in 2013.
This Pride Month, I would like to address everyone living in countries where our rights are not respected under excuses like “just don’t do it in public” or “no one is banning these people,” while the very fact of our existence and our desire to express ourselves freely, without fear for our lives, is labeled as propaganda.
The history of the LGBT community has had many dark moments, and even in countries where there is open support for queer people, it is impossible to feel completely safe. But it is important for us to remain united, stand together, support, and protect one another no matter what.
Happy Pride Month to everyone!
