Give Me A Break || Preston & Sydney
Preston, once he fully realised that it was probably the first sentence he’d spoken to her that didn’t have an edge of cockiness to it, felt his smile drop, his mind rushing to come up with some comment that would make up for it. “If anyone can pull it off, it’s me.” He stated, though it was a cocky statement there was no full of himself arrogance behind his words. Maybe he wasn’t only a cocky asshole to Sydney but he knew he did being it out more around her, with reasons he’d never be likely to admit to. Right now, his mind so preoccupied with other things he didn’t even feel the need for it, he felt terrible and he knew he probably looked it too.
"I uh.. Chocolate milkshake I guess." He said with a small shrug that raised and lifted his shoulders, visibly wincing from the movement against his ribs and just closing his eyes as he got through the initial shock of pain. He slowly opened them again as he remembered that he was in public and that Sydney was still standing beside the table. He offered her up a small smile as his gaze dropped back to the table, his left leg bouncing slightly, he hadn’t had any intention of even winding up at this cafe, really he’d wanted to avoid it in chances of seeing anyone he knew and yet he had still ended up there and had been seen by the only girl he knew that didn’t like him, which normally wouldn’t bother him except the fact that a small part of him wanted her to like him and now she was seeing him all bruised up.
Sydney rolled her eyes at Preston's comment about being able to pull the new look off, unsurprised by the return of his usual remarks, though the lack of conviction behind it was startling. Sure she thought he needed to be taken down a few pegs, but not like this. She nodded and began to take down his order, but promptly stopped when she noticed his wince, pain evident in his expression and ginger movements. "One chocolate milkshake, coming up" she said when he opened his eyes once more, pretending not to have noticed the little break he's taken from reality.
Without another word she turned and headed back to the kitchen, biting her lip as she tried to figure out what to do next. Preston being a cocky asshole she could handle, but this? Their usual conversations were so riled up that she didn't have the faintest clue how to talk to him normally. Realizing that she was at the end of her shift, Sydney rang up Preston's order and paid for it herself before clocking out and swapping her apron for her purse. When the milkshake was done she brought it back to Preston's table and set it down before sitting down across from him and sliding the drink to him. "On the house... if you tell me what the hell happened" she told him.
