Summer of 85 (2020) dir. François Ozon
The hug was a wave of emotional warmth and comfort Thomas hadnât even realised heâd needed, but he relaxed into it instantly. Now heâd found Newt, he could handle anything. They could find the others, together, and begin to figure this chaotic mess out. âYeah, you too, buddy.â Of course, he couldnât settle completely, as the fate of their friends was still unknown, but if two of them were okay, what was to say the rest werenât? Thomas wasnât ready to release the embrace yet, but Newt let go, so he pulled back and put his hand on Newtâs arm in return, mirroring the gesture.Â
âYeah. Iâm alright now. This guy⌠Scott -â Thomas glanced back, in the direction of the boy whoâd helped him. âHeâs been telling me things. Apparently weâre free. Safe.â He was still unsure as to how much of that he trusted, but Newt needed to know every detail. âI think we can trust him. Heâs gonnaâ get us some clothes, food.â He shook his head, it was still a lot to take in. âThey pulled us out, Newt. Weâre out of the Glade.âÂ
Distrust lined Newtâs features as he listened to his best friend speak about Scott. Safe? Free? He didnât believe it for one second. It was too good to be true, and that was enough for Newt. He eyed the figure over Thomasâ shoulder again, wondering what his play was. Lure them in with a false sense of security, perhaps? Strike them when their guard was down? Newt nearly stopped listening, his mind overrun with suspicious thoughts. Immediately, Newt shook his head at the suggestion. Clothes and food didnât mean they could trust him, or wherever this was. He listened patiently however, considering all the information before replying. He was going to explain to Thomas that he needed to know a lot more before he could follow Scottâs lead, but the boy continued. They were out of the Glade.
Newt blinked at him, the hold on Thomasâ arm loosening in shock. âWhat? What the bloody hell are you sayinâ, Tommy?â He pushed away, stumbling backwards in confusion, overwhelming sensations of relief and shock clashing within him. âWeâre⌠weâre out out?â Panicked, Newt looked between Thomas, the sleeping figure, and the other one by the door. âHoly klunk.â He whirled around, closing the space between him and Thomas once more, whispering low. âWhoâs âtheyâ? Where are our friends?â

All right, Sarah. Itâs time to come clean. What happened? You and Topper? Oh God! Itâs actually so embarrassing. He caught me slugging beer at the Tiki Bar. You werenât. Yeah. Shot drinking. Iâm not judging. I wouldnât blame you if you were.

Thomas and Newt often spent most of their time together. The Gladers, heâd found, were the only ones who truly knew how difficult it was to adjust to ânormalityâ. Watching television, playing games, having the freedom to explore and meet new people, it wasnât an easy routine to settle into. But Newt understood that. So they often sat together, in Thomasâ new room in the Stilinski family home, staring absentmindedly at a movie until darkness fell. Like clockwork, the sun began to set and the light dimmed in Thomasâ room. His stomach knotted, despite no longer living alone, he hated dusk. The nightmares often haunted him through morning, leaving him with pangs of jealousy for his twin who no longer had to force himself to sleep. Newt shifted beside him, taking it as his sign to leave. And for a second, Thomas planned to let him; that was their routine, after all. But the thought of facing another griever-chase alone, and a longing for the sanity and clarity that his best friend brought him, he placed a hand on Newtâs arm to stop him. He didnât have to deal with this alone, he had people -- or rather someone -- who cared for him enough to stay. He hoped. âNewt? Stay here tonight?â
Newt wasnât sure he could ever get used to this. Seeing as none of the Gladers could remember their former lives, this was completely new to them. Just as theyâd learnt how to survive in the Glade, they were learning how to survive all over again in the real world. Theyâd wanted out of the Arena so badly, they hadnât taken a moment to consider how different freedom would feel. Newt was used to working for hours in the sun, and now, he could sit still and watch a movie instead. His body always grew restless, but he stayed put, for Thomasâ sake. For all of their sakes. They just had to learn to adjust. And that would take time, Newt understood that.Â
He sighed when the film ended, not sure he'd taken any of it in at all. He doubted Tommy had either. He couldnât see the point yet. Surely, there were far more pressing things to be concentrating on than films. âWell. That bloody sucked.â Scratching at his head, Newt stood to go, figuring it was time to check on the other Gladers before trying to rest himself. Even whilst adjusting, old habits died hard. Those boys, and Nat, would still come first. He turned to say goodnight to Thomas, when the hand found his arm.
Newt paused, meeting his friend's gaze for a moment. His eyes were searching, vulnerable, and Newt knew he couldn't say no, even if he'd wanted to. And why would he want to? The pair felt safest in each other's company. As far as they could remember, that's how it had always been, and how it would stay. "Yeah, mate. Yeah. 'Course." Slowly, Newt lowered himself back to the ground, frown creasing his brow. It was obvious something was on Tom's mind. It had only taken a week or so, back in the maze, for Newt to figure him out. Now, it was as easy as reading a book. "You alrigh'? Somethin' happen?"
Thomas guessed that the hospital was full of kids just like him, but the eerie silence surrounding him suggested otherwise. Nighttime inâŚÂ Alexandria, Scott had called it, was absent of the metal cries of the grievers, the screams of boys being trapped in their own nightmares. Perhaps that only applied inside these four walls, but Thomas couldnât imagine being able to sleep in this town. Because heâd lie in a bed, a comfortable bed, waiting for an array of sickening noises that would never come.Â
But sleep was no current concern of his. At the forefront of Thomasâ mind was only one thing: his friends. Everything heâd done, the leader heâd become, it had all started with his devotion to them and their safety. Even if theyâd supposedly found their safe haven now, he couldnât abandon any single one. His morals didnât twist that way, and he could never truly rest until heâd ensured their well being.Â
So Thomas followed quietly behind Scott, who shockingly he believed he could trust for now, whilst still inspecting the building around him just in case. Any sign of a possible escape route was registered in his brain, as he knew heâd never truly feel safe again; not with anyone from outside of the maze. âAre we getting close?â Impatience ticked at Thomas, his palms were sweating with a mixture of adrenaline and nerves. The hunger heâd mentioned earlier seemed to have subsided, despite not having eaten, a far more important concern now plaguing his mind. Newt. Minho. Chuck. Natalie. Even Gally would be a welcome face, at least heâd know he didnât make it out alone.Â
They entered several rooms, staring at faces Thomas didnât recognise, his heart sinking into an deeper abyss with every failure. The infirmary was much bigger than it appeared, but with the recent accidents and events, perhaps it only seemed that way due to the overcrowding. âTheyâre not here.â And just as Thomas was about to begin running, distrust consuming his entire being, a figure appeared in front of the door they opened.Â
Thomas recognised who it belonged to immediately. Suddenly, a breath he didnât realise heâd been holding passed his chapped lips, and it was as if his dizzied vision now came into focus. âNewt.â
With that single word came nothing other than pure relief. He was okay. They were going to be okay. Despite Scott still standing beside him, Thomas suddenly felt as if it were just him and Newt in that dimly lit hallway, taking a few quick steps forward to close the space between them. A hand found Newtâs arm, gripping it tight, worried Newt would be separated from him again. âYeah. Itâs me.â
Newt lowered his arm only when he heard his friendâs voice, not entirely trusting his own eyes, nor whatever this place was. Considering the wires that had been sticking out of his arm earlier, he could even be hallucinating. But as Newt watched the boy come closer, saw the relief and desperation in Thomasâ gaze, he knew this couldnât be fake.
Throwing the empty glass onto the bed, Thomasâ hand finding his arm a moment later, Newt felt himself relax into a grin, pulling his friend into a hug. The stress of the whole situation seemed to fade entirely for a few moments. Maybe they were in danger, and maybe this was just another step in the trials, but at least they were together. If they had each other, then they could figure the rest out. âGlad youâre not bloody dead, Tommy. Iâm really, really glad.â
Despite his relief at the assurance Thomas was okay, his concern flooded back quickly, especially since the other boys werenât anywhere in sight. Pulling away, though still staying considerably close, his hand found Thomasâ arm this time, glancing warily over at the stranger waiting just outside the doorway. âAre you really alright? Whatâs bloody going on? Where the hell are we?â He asked, voice low.
