The adversary continually suggests ideas for your perusal and for your eventual consumption. All of these ideas are designed to harm you, and of all of them, the most frequently suggested is dread. If the adversary suggests that you dread things, and if you take him up on it, you will find that dread becomes a near continual habit. You at first will dread only dreadful things but, with the right encouragement, he can get you to dread anything, even purely wonderful things. You will learn to wait for the other shoe to drop. You will learn to drink the subtle poison of foreboding joy.
