Newbern Library Ribbon Cutting
We are so happy to finally have the Library Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Thanks to everyone who has helped us along the way and made this such a great experience for us all. We are very excited to see the future of the Library.
Special thanks to the First Baptist Church of Newbern Youth Choir for singing at the event and thanks to the Newbern Ladies Club for providing refreshments!
Last of the Brick Work!
After looking a few days of reflection in the courtyard (and recounting the remaining bricks) we decided to bring back the brick masons to add a couple more rows to the brick fence. We think bringing the fence just above eye height we strengthen the space within the courtyard and allow peaking views through to the street. With the amount of bricks available we were able to come back and install a brick patio in the courtyard- if you look close enough you will notice a subtle checkerboard pattern on the patio.
Awning Installation
Uniontown native, and our friend Bill Mackey was nice enough to bring his boom truck over for a day to raise up our steel awning. We had previously installed stainless steel threaded rods into the brick parapet for the back side of the awning to attach to. Once we “threaded the needle” and tightened double nuts and washers on we used steel rods with threaded ends to connect clevis connections to both the awning and threaded rods higher up on the parapet. We like the way the new awning looks- now we just need to paint it!
Big thanks to our friend Jeremy from Olympia Washington for helping out on the awning installation. Jeremy is a student of a RS alumni at Evergreen College in Olympia.

Steel Table Fabrication
We wanted a long social table to hold down the space in the library but we also wanted the space to be flexible incase the librarians wanted to have certain activities so we decided to break up the long table into 4 6′ long sections. The tables themselves were made from 1/4″ steel angle with a plywood base that sat inside.
We worked with Zane and Cassandra to weld up the steel tables the same day we worked on the awning. But lots went into preparing for that weekend- measuring, cutting and grinding the steel to get ready for Zane’s arrival.
Awning Fabrication
We gave designed a new steel awning for the library that is made from folded 1/4″ steel plate. We worked with Joe our engineer to minimize the amount of structure on the bottom of the awning and keep the profile as thin as possible.
A big thanks to Jim Turnipseed at Turnipseed International for donating all of the steel required- we wouldn’t be here with out you Jim!
After picking up the steel from Birmingham we took it to Superior Metal Works in Newbern to fold the three large pieces on two sides each. Then we loaded the folded plate onto a mobile fabrication platform that we made from unused TJI beams and plywood. Once on the mobile platform we brought the pieces to Morisette to be grinded and welded together with help from our good friend Zane Morgan (RS alumni- Town Hall), his wife Cassandra (RS alumni- Safe House) and their two dogs Merle and Cash came down early Saturday morning to weld up the awning and the steel tables in one day! The team worked with Zane before hand to make sure all of the parts were grinded and organized before his arrival.
Thanks Jim!
and
Thanks Zane!
Garden Committee Hard at work!
We have been working with the group of ladies that recently formed the Newbern Library Courtyard committee to landscape the beds in the courtyard. We have chosen a few native grasses, creeping jenny, a few types of rosemary and white cone flowers. They already look good and we look forward to how they grow in the future.
Making Moves in the Courtyard!
We got help from a few of our friends the last couple days working in the courtyard. Jerry Washburn from Marion and some of the current thesis students helped lay landscape fabric, move bricks and spread gravel in the courtyard.
Once the edging and gravel was installed we worked on preparing our brick walkway from the parking lot to the back door. We had to carefully level the earth, lay fabric, spread a level of sand and then tap the bricks into place- this proved to be much harder than expected since we were working with reclaimed bricks from the old vault since all the bricks were different sizes and shapes- but we made it work!
Cork Floor Install
We have started laying down the cork tile for the floor and it already looks great! We chose cork because it is soft and is used as a traditional library flooring material. We have sourced our cork from a company in Georgia that is pre-finished and pre-glued so we just have to apply glue to the subfloor and roll the tiles with a 100lb weight.

Brick Screen
We are very excited to reuse the bricks from the old bank vault in the courtyard. We have designed a fence that is two wythes wide with a 2″ space between so that we can tie the walls together with rebar and structural groat.
We dug trenches and finished the concrete for the concrete foundation but decided to work with a local brick mason James Williams to lay the bricks. We dry stacked the pattern we designed so that James and his crew could use it for reference when they started building the real thing.
Steel Edging Installation
We have started to install the steel edging in the courtyard in preparation for gravel! We worked with our structural engineer Joe and detailing consultant Dan from Chicago to come up with a method for stacking and welding the galvanized steel edging into place.
Our friend Zev Powell who is working for HERO Bike in Greensboro came down to help grind and prepare the steel for welding- thanks Zev!
Subfloor pt. 2
Now that we have finished the shelves, ceiling and bulkhead we are starting on preparing the floor for cork installation. We sanded the existing plywood subfloor and applied putty to the joints before we screwed down(every 6 inches!!) a .25″ plywood that will raise our finish floor to the proper height.
Bulkhead Install
We have started to install the plywood bulkhead that folds down from the ceiling to meet the bookcase. We have kept the joint tight between the ceiling and bulkhead and given ourselves a tolerance gap between the bulkhead and shelves below.
We were also able to CNC route vent openings in the bulkhead so we could run a duct through the north side of the bulkhead.
Cypress Siding
After many mock ups of different finishes, we decided to treat our cypress siding with Cabot’s Bleaching Oil to help the wood weather evenly. We chose a rabbited and beveled profile sometimes called novelty siding for its easy installation.

Soup Roast 2014
We are excited to host the family and friends of the Rural Studio for a brief tour of the library this Soup Roast. We have completed the bookshelves, installed the vault and started installing the ceiling and finishing the alcoves- excited about coming back to work after the break!
New friends from France
We were lucky to host two wonderful volunteers from France for the past week. Marion, an architect, and Thomas, a quality surveyor from Southern France have been on a 6th month road trip across the US and decided to volunteer at RS for the week.
Marion and Thomas completed all of the concrete preparation for the sidewalks along the front and back of the building, they also installed all the drywall to create the drywall ducks and even helped bring the vault back in the building.
We loved having these two on site for the past week and look forward to visiting them in France one day!
