after neo-griffith is defeated (by casca, thank you—and prior she defeats the godhand too, probably), casca and guts each shed a single tear in memoriam, and the subsequent panels gradually fade out. the following page is completely black. turn the page once more, and it fades back in to reveal guts, casca, griffith, judeau, pippin, corkus, and rickert sitting around a campfire. 

“…the end,” says griffith. he dusts off his hands but otherwise remains still, the embodiment of serenity.

“wow, griffith,” someone—whoever you want it to be—says, “that sure was a scary story! man, could you even imagine?”

someone else adds, “thank goodness something like that would never happen!”  everyone laughs, because the idea of guts leaving the band of the hawk and/or griffith sacrificing everyone was just so outlandish.

then griffith tells them all he loves them, they all tell him they love him too (in unison, obv), and he wins the scary story competition. his story is certainly the most frightening. 

the final moment of berserk is a full two-page spread group hug. 

this argument is bullshit, sorry.

i don’t doubt everyone was aware and accepting of death as a probable outcome of choosing to fight for griffith’s cause. they’re mercenaries, i imagine it comes with the job. that said, “fighting for someone knowing i may die,” and, “sacrificing myself for someone knowing i will die,” aren’t the same thing. 

and even if they were, it would’ve concerned dying in a battle between mortal men. being torn to shreds during a humiliatingly one-sided bloodbath shepherded by demons is not even remotely comparable.
