Class: White Mage. Black Mage. Summoner. Warrior. Thief. Mechanic. Shooter. Dragoon. Dark Knight.

Starting Weapon: Tattered Tome. A ragged and careworn travel journal with peculiar notes scrawled within its pages. The rune inscribed on its cover glows faintly in moonlight.

Ultimate Weapon: Grimoire of the Raven. A sleek and hefty tome bound in sleek material of the purest, deepest black, edged with delicate silver filigree. Each page is delicately etched with mysterious inscriptions and elegantly penned incantations. Its pages flutter in the breeze with the sound of rustling feathers.

1: Carbuncle Charge: Nevermore summons a large pet that attacks one enemy for medium damage and a 40% chance to inflict stun.

5: Garuda’s Gyre: A summoned shard of a creature of pure winds envelops the battlefield, greatly slowing enemies and increasing ally attack speeds for five turns. Inflict the Scything Wind status (enemy takes damage upon attacking or massive damage upon escape attempt).

6: Overcharge Aura: Nevermore infuses his current pet with immense magical power, transforming it into an evolved state with increased stats and an improved spell set.

Job: Summoner (DPS)

Weapon: Grimoire, Ruby Carbuncle (a disguised Ifrit-egi), a razor-sharp wit

AI Behavior: Nevermore is either a very nervous hero or a very brave coward. He hangs back as far as possible and sends his egi into the fray in his place, and only doing that once another party member has begun pulling aggro; he never initiates combat if at all possible. He’s quite speedy and eager to keep out of the line of fire, and will cancel almost any action in order to avoid mechanics or AoEs. His preference is to hold onto LB as long as possible until it is needed, but he will activate a level 1 or 2 LB in a panic if anything targets him directly.

She blinked at that. “You do?” Well, the Carbuncle was a big enough giveaway, but she wondered exactly the extent of what he knew if he could take one look at that and stayed confident enough that he could…figure it out. She leaned in, when he began to flip through the book, but admittedly, she couldn’t make heads or tails of a single bloody word of it, so it was a futile effort that left her rocking back on her heels in rather short order.

The stone, however, started to grow warmer in her hand once more, and she eyed it with an obvious nervousness as a faint red glow became brighter at its center. It hadn’t gone further than that…but that didn’t mean it would stay that way for long.

“I do!” he confirmed cheerily, briefly looking up from the writings to grin at her. “You see the most curious things traveling the world. Hear some curious stories, too. For instance…ah, here we are.” He ran a finger across the pages like one might pore over a directory. “Magic stones, magic stones…My my, we have quite a few options to choose from!” He hummed thoughtfully. “I don’t suppose it’s been talking to you, has it?”

Something about the way he asked was unusual; he almost seemed to know the answer already, and was merely asking out of courtesy to her, or to confirm his own suspicions. Still, somehow he didn’t seem malicious, exactly (and hardly threatening, considering he was a pudgy little thing that barely reachers her knees). Whatever his motives were, he at least felt sincere in wanting to help right now.

“…Ah.” That was enough of an answer for right now, and she would admit that…a few agonizing memories aside…she found it a bit difficult to be intimidated by this particular Lalafell. She wasn’t particularly great at reading people, but he seemed genuinely curious, and ‘curious’ was something she was willing to tolerate if he thought he could give her some information about this.

(She half-expected for him to ask some kind of price for doing so. But she would handle it if it got to that. He wasn’t large enough to pose a threat, at least.)

His question, however, caught her off-guard, and she momentarily looked suspicious of him. “…Yes. It has.” How did he know that? Unless he really had seen something like this before…

“Wonderful!” Certainly nothing about that stone was wonderful, but that wasn’t going to deter him any. “That makes this much simpler.” He snapped the book shut with enough force to startle his poor carbuncle, who skittered behind Daeyona’s ankles momentarily. “I’d say, unless we’re dealing with a crystal with delusions of grandeur, what you have in your hands is a soulstone.“ Somehow, the word dripped with importance, and he was obviously taking a moment to let it sink in. Or perhaps he was hoping she would ask a question and give him an excuse to talk more. Difficult to say.

“I would argue that.” She spoke rather dryly, even as she kept eyeing the stone. What exactly was it doing? She wasn’t sure she wanted to know, but she also didn’t want it blindsiding her again. That had almost ended badly the last time.

But when she heard him, she just kept staring him down, and it was clear that she didn’t really recognize the word. “…Yes? And?” If he was looking for an excuse to talk more, he had one handed right to him.

His face lit up in a broad grin. “Oh, they’re fascinating things, really! Rare, too, probably one of the most precious bits of crystal you could get your hands on. You see, they--” He was cut off by his carbuncle letting out a warning cry, tugging anxiously at the hem of his robe. “What that matter?”

His answer came quickly in the form of a heavy burbling, and the silhouette of two tentacle-like vines separating from the canopy around them. “Ah. Right,” he said faintly. “Shroud. Night. Ochu.” Luckily, his carbuncle seemed more on the ball than the arcanist himself, and charged the thing with a tiny war cry.

That interest was exactly what she had been afraid of, to be honest. What he then proceeded to say, in such an amused way, did little to endear him to her, either; did she not already look aggravated enough with this to begin with? But…but. At the same time, it wasn’t as if she could force him to un-know it, now that he had seen it, and she wasn’t entirely convinced that he wouldn’t just get pushy about it if she tried to brush it off as nothing.

(And brushing it off as nothing was a damnable lie, anyway.)

“It’s…” She shook her head, already lost for words before she even started. Great. “I don’t know. I picked it up, and I can’t…figure out what it even is.” And the worst part of it? Was that every time she thought about just getting rid of it again, she honestly felt like she couldn’t. And she didn’t bloody well know why.

Frankly, trying to intimidate him or push him away would almost certainly only result in him becoming even more interested and involved. He certainly looked pleased at having received a more or less straight answer from her. “Is that so? How curious!” Luckily, he couldn’t exactly try and put his hands on it, or even examine it closely, given that he didn’t even come up to the pocket she had been storing the thing in. “Sounds like it’s quite a potent bit of magic, or something very valuable. Though, if it’s the former, it would certainly be the latter.” He flashed one of those too-broad, scheming sort of smiles. “Been causing you some trouble, I take it?”

Well, of course she handed him a straight answer; she wasn’t one to faff about with such things, once she made up her mind to actually be honest about it. Or…mostly honest, at any rate.

(She did not want to mention how she could swear she heard it sometimes, in her head. This was already mad-sounding enough as it was.)

“Magic? Yes. Valuable…I don’t know.” She turned it over in her hand, now that it was behaving, and there was the faintest red light seemingly buried in its center. “…It’s been a problem. But I can’t get rid of it.”

And she didn’t know if that was because of her own curiosity, or if it really was because it simply wouldn’t let her. The thought of something messing with her head wasn’t an attractive one, she would say…

“Can’t, hmm?” He tipped his head thoughtfully to one side. “Well, I know one or two things about magical artifacts, perhaps we can puzzle this out together.”

He took his battered grimoire from his hip and began to thumb through its pages. A good portion of the book was filled with curious writings, likely written in some strange language or at least an unfamiliar cipher, alongside the occasional hand-drawn illustration. The arcanist himself could seem to make sense of it, at least, as he stopped on a page somewhere in the middle of the tome. “A little closer, would you?” he said distractedly, beckoning his carbuncle towards them; the creature’s glow was quickly becoming the only useful light source in the area. Not that he seemed to care. “Hmm...Perhaps we ought to start at the beginning, we could start to narrow it down from there...”
