Better Than One // Katie and Jack

Katie pulled her bag further up her shoulder. She had been ducking around corners and hiding in the lunchroom for the majority of the week. It felt as though she was walking on eggshells throughout the week. Though few dared to say their insults of the pictures to her face, she heard the whispered and murmured insults. She made her way through the slowly emptying halls. She was going to meet Jack Jones for their first official meeting. After the whole ordeal and not winning president, her ego was highly bruised. But, Jack had been kinder then she had expected about well everything. She knew Jack cared about the school, so it wasn’t the worst situation and VP still looked goof on college apps.

She entered the classroom noticing Jack was already there sitting down at a table. “Hey,” she greeted with a short nod to her sitting down next to her. She quickly pulled out a new notebook she had bought just for student council and opened it up in front of her. After she was situated she looked up at Jack pursing her lips. “I hope you haven’t been waiting too long,” she apologized, “So, let’s get started. Did you have any concrete plans or ideas that you wanted to start discussing first?”

Jack rolled off the table smoothly when Katie arrived and seemed to be ready for business. “Hey,” she murmured back, taking the time to get into a comfortable position for actual talking. It was probably easier to get things done if they were both on the same level. “Nah, it hasn’t been long at all. ‘After school’ isn’t really a great descriptor anyway.” Shrugging, she considered how well this was going to go. Probably not very.

“I don’t know if I have much that’s concrete,” Jack said honestly. “Nobody would have voted for what I would have put on there. I liked the messages that Zane was projecting, but your plans for implementation were probably more of my jam.” Pulling out a pen and an extremely impractical-looking notebook, she started doodling. This wasn’t for show or anything. It just helped her think better as she said everything freely, “Like... I want this school to be a better place, but also an enjoyable one. The only things I had really had fleshed out was sort of a resource page on the school intranet, and, like active Q&As to run for topics that people aren’t comfortable talking about... And, like, to figure out what the eff we can do together.”

Jack was reasonably certain that she had taken on way too much responsibility for someone that had not asked for it, but there was really no going back now. So there she was, sitting in an empty classroom after school waiting around for her vice president Katie Matlin. When she repeated the sentence to herself, Jack had to wonder if she had entered some kind of weird fever dream. In any case, she could play along until (hopefully) waking back into reality.

‘Waiting’ might not have described her situation well enough, as Jack was lying on top of a table, flipping through semi-related search results on her phone. She was more comfortable this way, and she was not going to compromise her happiness just to please somebody else. Also the chairs in this room seemed to have more than the average amount of gum stuck underneath them.
