Tick laughed as she side-hugged her best friend, “Crazy stuff happens everywhere we go, Pauli! You have to be more specific so we can do stuff ten times crazier than before! “I was a theater kid,” Pauline replied with a good-natured eyeroll, remembering her castmates of old. A few of them she missed, and a few of them she was glad to be well shut of these days.  “We read nothing but the old weird books.  I remember there was a girl in The Little Foxes with me who could’ve given your boss a run for his money.  And there was a boy from Romeo and Juliet who loved the Beat poets—he tried telling me about a book with a typewriter made out of a cockroach in it,” she added with a grimace as she picked a bit of dried blueberry off the end of her straw.  Somebody hadn’t cleaned the mixers, it looked like.

When Tick mentioned her making a good Queen, she couldn’t help but grin.  “I still have to figure out what a Red Queen would do.  Got any ideas for me?”

Tick sat pensively at the question, “I remember it mentioned the Red Queen explaining that trough the looking glass you have to run at least twice as fast to get somewhere else. I really do think you’d make a good distraction. Keep the opposing team two steps behind and such. That’s basically what the queens do in the story, they mislead, they rule a country that’s backward.” 

The Dormouse pulled Crowne back as she raised a finger to her lips before pointing at a security guard patrolling the halls that just came around the corner. 

Crowne nearly gasped as she was yanked back, but managed to stay quiet. Looking where the Dormouse indicated, she briefly spotted the patrolling guard before ducking back behind cover, and…

Was that…sign language?

Crowne hadn’t even graduated from high school, much less learned a second language, but even she could tell that the Dormouse wasn’t just flapping her hands around randomly. Now probably wasn’t the best time to bring that up, however. Nodding dumbly, Crowne nonetheless pulled her gas mask down over her face.

Dormouse sighed in relief as she watched Crowne pulled down her gas mask even though it was quite obvious that she didn’t understand her. She was really going to have to be patient. Did no one explain to her about her impediment? No matter, she had a job to focus on. 

Shade smiled as Jervis walked through. 

“Welcome to England. How does it feel to be home?”

The shadow door closed behind the two, leaving them standing on the sidewalk. How does it feel to be standing home?”

He turned towards the cafe.

“Though, I’m not sure it’s the same as you remember it, or if we’re anywhere near your home.”

Jervis actually couldn't recall much of his time in England. Besides his time with Alice in the garden and his time with his mum and grandparents it was all pretty much a blur. 

However, he closed his eyes and took in the moment. He had vague memories of this place.
