Dear friends abroad: the American president is lying
I thought after so many years of therapy I’d stop blaming myself for everything. My kid’s on his phone too much? My fault. The federal government is repealing health insurance subsidies? My fault too
If you’re at a party and you meet a writer I can assure you with 100% sincerity they do not in fact want to hear your screenplay or novel ideas
The boy is at an awesome (and extremely expensive) summer camp and he’s texting mutliple times a day asking for permission for phone apps. NO NO NO ABSOLUTELY NOT

Overheard in England
“Do the steak frites come with chips?"
Happy Father’s Day folks
I wrote something about masculinity and cooking for One Potato, a lovely substack about parenting and food. Read it here.
Marital Bliss
Mrs N holding up a block of cheese: "Did you leave this out on purpose?"
Me: “No, sorry"
[Mrs N puts the cheese in the fridge]
Me [to the tune of ‘Gimme Shelter’]: “OH CHILDREN. SHE PUT THE CHEESE AWAY. SHE PUT THE CHEESE AWAY."
Mrs N: “WOULD YOU BE QUIET I’M WORKING"
Important survey
I’m going to England. Which accent should I affect so they don’t beat the shit out of me because I’m American?
Glaswegian
Dutch

I am bad at the writing for the money
Pitched a piece to my friend’s website that pays $60, forgetting that I had coffee last week with the editor from the website that pays $300, and also forgetting the website that pays $500

Electradaddy: Your memory is already a blessing
15 years ago, before my boy was born, I started this anonymous blog to connect with other parents. I was frightened and excited and worried and I wanted a place to gather my thoughts without anybody I know reading them or judging me.
What I found here, to my surprise, was an online community of supportive parents and some truly lovely and interesting people who became actual friends. (You know who you are.) These meaningful online connections happen all the time now, but back then it was new and unusual for me and kind of beautiful.
Electradaddy was one of them. He wrote about his own family, the joys and struggles of fatherhood, and occasionally the difficulties of life in America as a gay man. I also had the sense, reading between the lines, that he was a successful entrepreneur. Unlike yours truly, whatever his difficulties, he was never self-pitying.
In the interest of discretion, he deleted his blog when he took a public role, so I won’t name him. But we connected on FB and continued to kibbitz online. I loved the pride he took in his family, and how civic-minded he was, showing up for his community instead of just posting about it. I hoped to actually see him in person one day but it never happened. I wish it had. I wish I had at least called him when he told me was sick.
He was so funny and his sense of humor could be really raw. It was amazing. He was also sensitive and supportive.
There’s a Jewish saying when someone passes, “may their memory be a blessing.” It’s a prayer, a wish for someone grieving. His memory, in my case, is already a blessing. RIP my friend. All the cupcakes for you.
Last night the boy came home and flopped on the couch and said he didn’t feel well. I asked him what I could do to help, and said WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS ASKING ME THAT and he tried to kick me.
This morning he was all smiles and hugs before leaving for school.
Parenting a teenager is like being an abusive relationship.
Merry Christmas to all, even the haters and the losers

Heard from the boy’s room
“WHY AM I IN FRANCE?"
