Like many avid book readers, I successfully managed to read this heartbreaking, yet equally heartwarming, novel before the production of the film had been announced. The story instantly connects with countless readers as it follows 26 year old Louisa Clark and her struggle to find happiness in her work.
After receiving the most unlikeliest of job offers, one which Louisa is sceptical of to say the least, she begins to find fulfilment as a full time carer to Will Traynor, who was involved in a road traffic accident several years earlier leaving him paralysed. Louisa soon commits herself fully to the role and the relationship between Louisa and Will quickly blossoms from the icy rapport the two shared during the early stages of the book, into something rather beautiful.
The love Louisa has for Will grows and grows as she simultaneously battles to come to terms with Will’s wishes. She commits all her efforts into, essentially loving Will, however, it proves difficult to sway him.
Despite the lack of impassioned writing or expressive quotes that can be found in literary classics, this book is moving in its own unique way, and encourages the reader to regard certain life moments from different points of view. Me Before you is a wonderful, enlightening book which captures the hearts of its audience and whilst I have to admit, I did shed a few tears during the closing chapters, when I turned the last page, I turned it with a warm feeling in my heart.
This novel is an ideal holiday read for bookworms who favour lighthearted, romantic books; the perfect book to read in the sun, by the pool.
