How to speak like a real Uruguayan
*Disclaimer* I am not Uruguayan and I donāt pretend to know everything about the language. I just want to share my love for the ācastellano rioplatenseā and some things I learned about it as Iāve now been living in Uruguay for 4 months :)
In Uruguay, āYā and āLLā is pronounced āch/shā. Like for example, āplayaā -> placha, ātortillaā -> torticha, ācalleā -> cache, āyoā -> cho. Itās a bit difficult to understand at first, but after a few weeks I got used to it and I even started to speak like that!
Uruguayans often end their sentences with ātaā, it basically means āthatās itā, like the French āvoilĆ ā or can also meanĀ āOKā
They useĀ ācheā a lot to call someone, to get their attentionĀ
In Uruguay, like in most South American countries, people donāt use ātuā and āvosotrosā. Instead of ātuā, they use āvosā, and instead of āvosotrosā, they use āustedesā
As they use vos and ustedes, the conjugations are a bit different too, itās called being āvoseantesā. For example, you may have learnt in Spanish class that āyou canā is said ātu puedesā. But in Uruguay, they would say āvos podĆ©sā. Itās the same for you say: ātu dicesā becomes āvos decĆsā. And it goes like this for every verb with a diphthong. Also ātu eresā would be āvos sosā.
Re is a prefix Uruguayans use to put an emphasis on the world and to show that something is great, for example I heard a lot of times ārelindoā, ārecoolā, ārebienā, ārelocoāā¦
Uruguayans often greet people with a friendly āHoliiiiā. Itās a casual way to say hello, like when English speakers say āheyā instead of hello.
Uruguayans also tend to āeatā the end of the words, for instance instead of saying āparaā, they would say āpaāā and they sometimes donāt say the s at the end of the words, like āvamoāā instead of āvamosā
At first I thought they only said it for football (vamos arriba la Celeste) but in reality they say it all the time, for example when a teacher wants to motivate us he would say āvamoā arribaā, itās a bit likeĀ āletās keep goingā
āEverythingās alrightā, āitās coolā, itās a little idiom they say all the time
Short forĀ ātranquiloā, which means cool/chill.Ā āComo estas?āĀ āTranqui y tu?ā
Literally, āme matasteā meansĀ āyou killed meā andĀ āme mueroā means āIām dyingā. As Iām French it seems normal to me because I often say stuff likeĀ ātu māa tuĆ©ā,Ā āmort de rireā etc but for people from other countries: donāt worry your friend is not dying itās just a way to exagerate in conversations.Ā
Itās one of the Uruguayan idiom I love the most, it basically mean āitās a lovely dayā, they say it all the time and itās super cute :)
