Gala Glam ✨✨✨ It was an honor to be able to attend my first ever Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) Northeast Gala. It was amazing to see everyone all dressed up looking so handsome and gorgeous, especially myself, having literally not washed my hair for like 2 weeks prior because you know, exam time #LatinaProblems 🥲🥲🥲. I got to catch up with my faves at other schools who I didn’t see at the conference earlier, and meet new faves! 😍😍😍La Mesa was totally a vibe. 😁😁😁 I also loved seeing the 4th year students come on stage to announce their specialties and receive their LMSA stoles for graduation. 😍😍😍. It made me excited for when the day comes when my classmates and I get ours! 🥹🥹🥹 The highlight of the night was definitely the dance floor after dinner. I don’t think I can remember the last time I got down lol 😂😂😂. It made me realize the importance of making sure to have fun because it’s so easy to get caught up in the med school- doctor grind, especially when your dealing with your last systems bloc while studying simultaneously for Step 1. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 And it doesn’t help when your self regulation and time management is less than desired lol. This past weekend I represented @rwjms at the Latino Medical Student Association’s (LMSA) Northeast Regional Conference. Last year, I couldn’t go because I wasn’t in the best place academically. But this year, I’m in a completely different situation academically & I was so excited to finally go to my first LMSA Northeast conference! My executive board & I truly represent the greatness of my school’s Latino community & I am truly in awe of everything we have accomplished this past year (pictures to come eventually 😜). Not only were we just attending the conference, but my school’s chapter & I WON 3 AWARDS!!! We went from, “does your school even have a LMSA chapter?” To sweeping up the awards & establishing traditions and a strong Latino presence at our school, rolling deep with 11 members present. 😄 It was amazing to network, & catch up with my friends and colleagues at other medical schools, who are also doing AMAZING things out there! 😍 I learned so much, especially about the pathways into leadership & academic medicine, the disparities in those fields, & how crucial it is us for to be in those spaces, in order to take control of our narrative, the future, and our care. Hearing other physicians narratives, many similar to mine, was so inspiring and uplifting in so many ways, especially having just taken our Gastrointestinal systems midterm Friday morning, with no sleep or food, then rushing home to pack and then drive down to Baltimore that same evening. 😵‍💫 The most meaningful moment of the Conference was running into an admissions committee member of another med school, who I have known for years, through seeing her at multiple med school fairs and networking events year after year, throughout my bazillion gap years. She was always so supportive of me & always jokingly asked me why haven’t I applied yet. I haven’t seen her since a month before the pandemic started, because there were no more in person fairs, the 20-21 cycle was virtual, & I matriculated in 2021. So when she saw me, she was so happy to see me and so proud of me, that I finally made it. As the Mentorship Chair for the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) @RWJMS , I’ve had the privilege to do some really amazing things. One them being the opportunity to further my commitment to increase the number of underrepresented students in medicine. Through this commitment is how we start to bridge the gap in health disparities. I’ve also been blessed with a super amazing eboard who also share my commitment and passion. Our group chat is also legendary & definitely a major highlight of medical school. 😂 Even though we made it, we must continue to lift those up behind us. You can’t be, what you can’t see. So people need to see more Latinx, low income, & BIPOC med students and physicians. 👊 So during our tenure as e-board, we’ve done multiple panels & presentations on the medical school application process. Demystifying the process, elucidating the nuances, dismantling the elitism, serving as mentors and resources, & sharing our unique journeys into medicine to inspire others to not give up. Having the platform to share this, & empower more students has been amazing. 🥰 I love being able to tell students that if I can make it, so can they. I’m not special or super smart. I don’t come from privilege, being a biracial Latina from a low income background in ny/nyc. Lord knows how much I struggled and had to pick myself back up. But no one is irredeemable in this process. & you’re never too old to follow your dreams. I love seeing the look on peoples face when I say what year I graduated undergrad 😂 But i knew that my narrative was needed in medicine after witnessing some icky things throughout my gap years & I wasn’t going to give up because I was given the short end of the stick. I knew my time would come once everything fell into place. I’m just someone who worked hard, fixed my stuff, made things work on my terms, & wasn’t going to take no for answer. Officially 3/8 MD!!! 🥹🥹🥹 Oops! Forgot to share this wonderful update lol. 😝😝😝 Idk how, but I’m almost 1/2 way through medical school and almost done with my pre-clerkship curriculum with just 1 organ system (Gastrointestinal) left to go. Eeek! 😳😳😳 Then I start clinical rotations! 🥲🥲🥲 But like how!? 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 Where did the time go!? Lord knows how crazy this semester was. Im not going to lie- it was only until recently I started responding “I’m good” and not “I’m okay” or “I’m surviving” when people ask me how I’m doing. Or I stopped saying that things are “bad” lol. 🙃🙃🙃 Muskoskeletal-Nervous Systems (aka MSK-N) really tried me. Ooofff. 😭😭😭 I was on a solid upward trend ending M1 year and in the summer. So to be knocked down by MSK after consistently passing for so long, especially after figuring out what worked for me and what I needed to do in order to pass, really sucked and definitely hurt. I was even more hurt by the fact that I just wasn’t able to pull through and pass last minute. Just not how my brain works unfortunately. 🥺🥺🥺 But I picked my self up, stayed true to me, established boundaries, tried again, and finally passed MSK! And even though my clinical neuroscience 1 and 2 blocs (aka Neuro) was tough AF, I passed both and then even got my first A in a bloc- Psychiatry/Behavioral Neuroscience!!! I even got above the class average which like never happens, let alone even achieve near the average. 😂😂😂 Yes I know “psych” is known to be “easier”but I don’t care because an A is an A and when upperclassmen say something is easy, it’s never easy. It’s just not as bad, relatively speaking. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 But I made it! And I couldn’t have made it this far without the love and support of my friends, family, my amazing faculty and Dr.NerdNOTinNiceClothes himself lol ❤️❤️❤️. The first minute into the new bloc in medical school. ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️ (Swipe left) Second minute into the new bloc. 😭😭😭 Ooofffff. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 Second year has been something. Not going to lie, I’m going to keep it 💯 but I’ve been super overwhelmed hence my absence. So many all nighters, “2-nighters” (yes I’m know I’m crazy; don’t be me lol ) and cry sessions. 😭😭😭 Some people brag about good grades. Some people people brag about money. Some people brag about looks. Nah. I brag about my resilience. #Strong #Latina 😝😝😝 I used to brag to everyone that med school hasn’t broken me down because I’ve been through it all BEFORE med school. I literally have said, “I have no tears left to cry, because I cried so much trying to get here; so nothing can get to me. When you “Doctor” for the first time. 🥹 Yesterday night was my first time as a Student Doctor in my school’s student run clinic, @PromiseClinic . Our clinic serves our local uninsured community, which is mostly Latinx, BIPOC, many who are undocumented. We operate out of my schools Federally Health Qualified Healthcare Center. 😃 Even though I’m there so often as a Lab Chair running the Lab Steering Committee, in which I’m doing the labs for the patients or I’m there serving as a Spanish interpreter for many of the other teams, I have never gotten the chance to actually go in as a Student Doctor because my team’s patient was lost to follow up due to social issues, a common occurrence in our patient community. Our student run clinic is pretty unique because we operate on a continuity (aka primary care) model and not an urgent care/walk in model like most med schools. And so we care for the same patient throughout our medical school career! 😃 So all the student doctor teams consist of 4 student doctors, 1 from each year. As a second year student, my role is to do the patient interview (and interpret because I’m also my team’s interpreter 😁), and help out with the physical exam. One of our upper years was unable to make it, so I had to step up (within my ability of what I was trained to do), which was a daunting task, since I’ve never seen a patient in a real student doctor capacity and I can never remember the steps for an interview and physical exam. 😳 It’s still surreal making the transition from Tayra the clinical coordinator/clinical research coordinator who would one day go to medical school to student doctor, after those 12 very long gap years trying to make this dream happen. Med school’s a real beach. 😂😂😂 Unfortunately I only had 3 weeks of summer, and I tried my best to enjoy every moment and really be present! These pictures are from the end of July right after I took my last exams and I was done being a orientation group leader (Go OG 15! 👊👊👊) and so it was my first time going to a beach in NJ! 😁😁😁 shoutout to @_karenmakar and @eralpip for taking me! 🥰🥰🥰 As a New Yorker, I only went to the lake in upstate NY, and the beaches in NYC (hello previous no car life I totally don’t miss and taking the subways to the beach 😝😝😝) and in Long Island. One great thing about living in a new location for medical school, is I have been able to discover so many new places over the past year! 😍😍😍 Which is great because i live for food and and fashion! 🤩🤩🤩 Whether it’s beaches, shopping, new restaurants, new hiking and outdoorsy places, or whatever, I tend to make a new location my own and try my best to scout everything out. You always here about the woman behind the man, but you never hear about the man behind the woman. And for me, that’s Dr.NerdNOTinNiceClothes in the flesh! 😂😂😂 (Sorry; he doesn’t have an insta and he barely uses FB 😝😝😝) Since we’ve been together, there has been; 1 bachelors degree 2 post-baccalaureate programs 1 masters degree 2 doctorate degrees (1 in progress! 😉) 13 publications (manuscripts 😁) So it’s been quite the academic journey. And I wouldn’t have made it this far in this thing called medicine without his unconditional love and constant support for the past 14.5 years! ❤️❤️❤️ Through all the setbacks, failures, crying sessions, bad test scores, temporary long distance relationship, and bad work situations, he’s been through it all with me, and I with him. He always inspires me to be better, to always go for what I want, to work hard towards achieving it, to truly not GAF, remain calm in the face of adversity, and he also NEVER misses a moment to call me out on my bull shit. 🥲🥲🥲 He has supported me through all the ups downs, and has never ever wavered nor doubted me and this is why I was so proud to be at his PhD in Physics Defense last week! I’m officially 1/4 MD!!! 😭😭😭 Like how!? 🥲🥲🥲 I passed my makeup exams and I’m officially 25% MD! What made this moment even sweeter was that I passed my last exam the day before the incoming class’s White Coat Ceremony so in a way, it was also my moving up ceremony too! 🥹🥹🥹 Yes, I was a one of the Peer Mentors (Orientation Group Leaders) while studying for my last makeup exam. 🙃🙃🙃 But I was supposed to take that exam two weeks earlier but I caught Covid at the end of June, which extended my makeup exams until late July and I wasn’t going to miss out on being a peer mentor (orientation group leader)! 😝😝😝And I’m glad I was still able to make it because I had so much fun! 😍😍😍 I learned so much this year and I’ve been blessed to have had the opportunity to do some amazing things and be part of some amazing organizations. Shout-out to my amazing classmates, my awesome faculty, support services, and mental health teams who’s help and expertise was crucial to my success and growth, always making better, my friends back home, my family and most importantly the mister, Dr.NerdNOTInNiceClothes himself for all unconditional support and love during this crazy time. It truly takes a village and in my life a small solar system. Serving as a Peer Mentor for my orientation group was by far definitely one of my fave experiences in med school. It was so so much fun. 😁😁😁 I was one of the greeters, so I got the chance to greet students as they first walked in, and so to get them to loosen up and have some fun, I cheered (read; yell), “NO MORE MCAT!!! YOU GUYS MADE IT!!! CONGRATS!!!!” Got lots of laughs and sighs of relief! 😅😅😅 Then each of the peer mentor duos had to do a 20 second introduction skit to music. I chose Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”, because I’m extra like that and really had my Legally Blonde Elle Woods/Clueless Cher Horowitz/Kardashian moment and took a selfie with the incoming class. 😎😎😎 The teddy bear in the pic was my Peer Mentor partner @_karenmakar who couldn’t make the intro so I grabbed a rainbow teddy bear (because of course I would own a rainbow teddy bear) and put a Karen sign on it . 😂😂😂 Peep my stories in a bit for more dets. 😜😜😜 But my group and I had a such great time getting to know each other, doing the scavenger hunt tour, and bonding 😃😃😃. My group was just awesome and we just vibed really well together and we’re like a little family; my mom/titi vibes were on fleek 😉😉😉. They can’t escape @_karenmakar and I now 🤪🤪🤪 Yeah my OG is better than yours 😛😛😛. And not only did I grow close to my Orientation Group, but I also got the chance to get to know more of my classmates my year! And that was also an amazing experience too. 🥰🥰🥰 I also was asked to speak at the M2 Panel, (thank you for the invite @rahulahoops & @labeeeeqa ❤️❤️❤️) which was also amazing to be able to share my experiences, especially as a married, super nontrad, Latinx med student. Im alive!!! 😬😬😬 And! I was invited to be one of my med school’s peer mentors for orientation! 😍😍😍 Peer mentors at my med school are basically orientation group leaders. Two second year students are given a group of 10 incoming first year med students during orientation and we get to serve as their mentors and guides as they go through this transition on becoming student doctors. As a mentor to so many students, both online and in person, I was so excited for this official role! 😄😄😄 Especially since @_karenmakar and I’s Orientation Group was Group 15 which was my group number last year 😭😭😭 I’ve always wanted to be an orientation group leader, but because I was on the soccer team in undergrad, we had to come in a week early for pre-season training, so I never got the chance to be an orientation group leader! So I was stoked to finally get that chance! 😃😃😃 I was even more excited that I got to be paired with one of my dear friends in the program (peep the last pic in the carousel). Probably because we both scored opposite on the personality tests. I’m sure you can guess which personality type I got 🤣🤣🤣 So the Friday before, all the peer mentors and orientation leaders come to school for an all day training and bonding with our Student Affairs Deans. Just here on my balcony, studying in the middle of summer and being a big rainbow, outfit and matching pens and all. No big deal. Totally normal and super cas. 🥲🥲🥲 Unfortunately I’m still not done with my M1 year yet, while most of my class is. The FOMO is SO real. I had to make up a few exams from earlier in the year. So I refuse to call myself a M2 just yet. 😬😬😬 The learning curve was pretty tough. It took me a bit to figure out what I needed to do in order to be successful and best retain and learn the crazy amount of information that gets thrown at us. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 But I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by so much love and support (hehe peep my jacket 😜😜😜). I’ve been still able to make it through and get better as time progresses. Resilience on fleek. 😁😁😁 My team of academic and health specialists call it a blessing in disguise because now I got the opportunity to revisit some of the systems I had trouble with and really drill it home and learn it right, which gives me a head start for studying for Step 1 (aka the medical boards part 1). Through my past work in NYC, working to bridge the gap in health disparities both in clinical research and in culturally competent care, to my current work at my medical school in which I engage in multiple community outreach initiatives through our student run clinic for the uninsured @promiseclinic , to serving as a mentor to 10,000s of premeds on Facebook to not be me 🤣🤣🤣, through the undergraduate outreach we do for underrepresented students in medicine through @LMSA_RWJMS, to being the co-president of our family medicine interest group where we coordinate and participate in free Pap smear screenings through periodic CEED (Cancer Education and Early Detection) Events , and working towards admissions equity as an Admissions Ambassador, this is where I thrive and where I hope to continue to keep making an impact! 😍😍😍 So I was super stoked when I got the opportunity to get a private tour with one of the the Deans of Seton Hall Law School with my one my sisters who recently just got accepted there (in addition to every other law school she applied to 🤩🤩🤩). I didn’t know that law schools, similar to medical schools, hold free clinics for their local population in need of legal services and representation. 🥰🥰🥰 I love that my Grand Canyon of gap years has been so awesome in my development as a student physician! So don’t be ashamed of your gap years! A cool thing about medical school is that your classmates aren’t just your classmates but they’re also your colleagues too; inside and outside the classroom! 😊😊😊 So having those interpersonal skills and treating everyone with respect and courtesy is key! 🙂🙂🙂 This is where those nontrad gap years job experiences comes in for the win AGAIN. 😁😁😁Lol I sounds like a MMI (multiple mini interview) question. 😂😂😂 So in medical school, there’s a lot of small groups you get put into and a major one is in our Physicianship course (aka our how to be a doctor class lol). And for our Physicianship course, you get the opportunity to really grow close with your group. 🥰🥰🥰 From having insightful discussions about medicine, to sharing your own experiences, to learning about everyone else’s unique background and viewpoints, to learning how to do a physical exam on each other, it’s been definitely one of my favorite classes and has definitely made me a better human 😍😍😍. Our facilitator (our physician preceptor for Physicianship) was super lovely and took us out to lunch a few weeks ago to commemorate the end of the year, and we all had a such a great time (peep my stories in a bit)! We also get the same small group and facilitator for second year too! I can’t wait to continue to grow as a student physician along with my small group and facilitator! ❤️❤️❤️ How do you hope to grow next academic year!?
