The thing in front of me was slightly to the left of everything I knew. It's face, the way it stood, even its clothes. None of it looked quite right and every part of my being was screaming at me to run.
The worst part of it was its smile. Teeth too white, eyes too blank.
"Lama'ak," it said in a scratchy voice with so many layers that I couldn't even begin to tell if it had a distinct gender.
It was staring at me, waiting for something. After a few moments, I said, "Sammie."
The thing's smile grew bigger. "Meet."
God, I hope it isn't calling me it's next meal.
I nodded. "Nice, ah, nice to meet you, too..?"
Its head tilted slightly as it stuck its hand out.
Okay, okay. This was...a thing that's happening.
I took its freezing hand with my own and shook.
"Do you...want something to eat? A sandwich?"
"Lama'ak," it said again, "No meat."
Oh, thank god. "...do you want some cookies?"
It nodded once and sat on my porch. It was unsettling to watch. It didn't sit so much as it seemed to fold the space around it until it was on the floor.
I closed the screen door, just in case this...whatever it is needs to be invited in like a vampire, and all but ran to the kitchen.
Out of sight, I took a second to catch my breath.
Was this really happening? God, I'd die if this was a horror movie.
"Sure, Sammie," I whispered harshly, throwing open my pantry, "let's offer the creepy creature food because that's always a good idea! Never gone wrong for anyone ever."
Whatever. It's too late now. There's a thing on my porch waiting for cookies, so I guess it's gonna get some cookies.
