he's not up to nefarious things or lying to you per se, but still, the fact that he's keeping you in the dark should not make his stomach twist that hard—he's just trying to protect you after all.

maybe his heart clenches when he sees the way your eyebrows furrow in concern when you see the fresh cut on his cheek that's "just a scratch, a guy was drunk and got aggressive," and totally not a harsh beating from one of skyhaven's villains.

or when you smack his arm while laughing, and he accidentally lets a groan slip out, causing you to pull up his sleeve and examine the bruise forming on his arm from yet another nightly escapade where he got shot at.

or even that time when he stopped responding for days on end, coming back home to you with an almost imperceptible limp (that you obviously notice) and a box of pastries.

every single time, caleb comes up with an excuse for his injuries, but somehow, every single time, the bruise sites match up with those of skyhaven's darling vigilante, orpheus. funnily enough, even caleb's year-long disappearance matched his. you've had your suspicions, but surely he wouldn't lie to you about something this big.. right?

at first, he'll tell himself something along the lines of "oh, i just care about her life and job! the gossip is necessary to know what goes on in her life!"

sure, it started off like that. but now, even if he denies it, he's actually into hearing what laura's boyfriend sent to kylie. if you asked him if he was genuinely invested though, he'd give you an excuse about how "it's a nice way to decompress after a long day at the fleet, pips" or "what, should i not care about things my girlfriend is invested in?" — but really? he's just nosey now.

you're both laying on the couch, your legs sprawled upon caleb's as he traces abstract shapes on your calves. when you drop a bombshell, he fully grabs your ankles and sits up properly with wide eyes.

"they broke up!?"

you nod furiously, and something in the back of your mind tells you that caleb is way more invested in this than he told you before, but you bite your tongue. the gossip comes first.

"can you believe it? kayla received a message from jules, and he was basically confessing to her — even though he literally proposed to laura the weekend before!!"

caleb slaps a hand over his mouth, mumbling something along the lines of "damn cheaters" before he inquired more about what happened after.

really, there's no gossiper quite like caleb xia. he'll deny it, over and over again, but it's not like the fleet has much going on drama wise. therefore, he'll live vicariously through you — because he cares about you, yes, but also because who doesn't like to hear about drama?
